I was just reading the star introductions on Star Crossed, and I was surprised how many of the stars said the one thing they'd change in the biz is to raise the legal porn age to 21 from 18.
What do you think of this? Why do you think so many women in the biz are for this idea?
Ultimately you can't legislate good sense. We have certain age based criteria not because people have developed maturity and good judgement, but because they are easily checked. I mean, some people should never be allowed to drink.
Some females can make that decision at 18, some can't. Some can make it at age 21, some can't.
If you're going to "improve" things -- whatever standard you judge "improving" by -- get rid of the "one-age-suits-all" concept.
Years ago, when the age of emancipation was 21, younger men (who had the need and the money to do so) went to court to have themselves declared "adult" to determine their own affairs. Of course, back then women of all ages were chattel, so there is no gender equivalent.
Why not 16?

In the UK you normally could, that is if the UK porn makers went by UK laws rather than going by US laws in order to sell their DVDs to the US market.
I would never want anything bad for those young girls in porn, but it's nice to see so many beautiful of them in the biz (as long as they don't do it 100% for the money only) .
just wondering how many of the girls that want it raised are american. i imagine more than 90% are.
in a capitalist country that constantly feeds its people 'dreams' of wealthy and glamour in their mass media that has little emphasis on art and education it's not surprising that most teenage girls aren't more mature and less naive.
not saying that this isn't the case in say europe, but i think the cultures are vastly different and that would be reflected in the porn industry. similar to the gun homicide stats. see: bowling for columbine. usa is thousands above the rest of the world. again, a product of its own deadly culture.

From another point of view you could say that even if you were a 21 year old hottie you still are not going to get as much work as an 18 year old newbie. With these days of shrinking economics would a producer hire someone who is 21+ and maybe a bit more expensive than say an 18 year old fresh face who's trying to get established. It would have to come down to the quality of the adult production you're making I guess. Except for the specialty titles is porn today nothing but older teenagers going to the extreme--gonzo is king. Merging young pornstars (the younger the better) with ghastly economics (lower overhead).
night_lick: the real age of a performer doesn't matter when it comes to the teen fantasy. Put mary janes and a plaid mini-skirt on a 27-year-old porn newbie and you won't be able to tell the difference. She's new to you.
I wish people would get over the whole "she's just doing it for the money" idea. Porn is not the only way to make big money. People get into it because *it's porn*. Porn doesn't just mean money. Porn means sex. Porn means fame. Sex and fame are an integral part of porn's draw. It sounds very old-school puritanical (oddly enough) when people eliminate female agency around our sexuality by saying that love of sex couldn't possibly have anything to do with going into the sex business. Gimme a break. Pornstars would've gone into non-sex modelling if it were just about the money and nothing about the sex.
It's not just about money. Nothing's ever just about money, because there's a million different ways to make money. How we all make our money is always about a multitude of reasons. Think about every job you've ever had. Did you do any of them "just for the money"? No. For one, you had to be able to *do* the job itself. You can't be a neurosurgeon or a forklift operator just cuz the money's good. You have to have the skill to do those things. And for 2, you have to have the opportunity to get into those fields. And for 3, you have to want to do it. Porn is not an easy biz to get into or to stay in. If there's not a part of you that wants to do it, you won't last long.

How about we raise the age to enlist in the service up to 21 as well then. Cuz 18 year old kids are too naive to decide if they are ready to put their lives on the line. [Soooo much more important than fucking on film]
Part of becoming responsible is having the ability to make the wrong decison. Sometimes its making the decision poorly and then realizing it. OF COURSE young adults are going to not always choose best for them... lawd knows I didnt...
Pluhease, any half decent looking girl or lady can have better "scenes" without having some camera following around.
... Porn means fame. ... To become famous the ratios are not pro porn. Maybe it goes well for getting (ill)famed.
... Pornstars would've gone into non-sex modelling if it were just about the money and nothing about the sex. ... Porn is not an easy biz to get into or to stay in. If there's not a part of you that wants to do it, you won't last long. ...
It may be a little bit easier, than to get into non-sex modelling.
On Topic everything has been said, with the exception that - sometimes - after reading the posts of industry people the only mature decision is to not get into porn, be it at age 18 or age 81.
Yeah, good question. I'd like to know the answer too. To make a long story short: I was recently browsing in a German sex forum. If all the posted stuff is true, it's amazing how horny some of the girls are in real life. So some of the girls in porn maybe even do it also(?) for fun(?).
To be honest: In the most gonzo titles everybody can clearly see it's the money only . None natural robotic stuff.
There are many 18 year olds in porn, even if they are 20 or 25 years old. But the newbies, 17 yesterday, 18 today, why don't producers just shoot 10 year olds and get it over with. So much porn is pedophilic in direction and action, might as well shoot em young. I am not saying this is rational thought, but I can't even begin to list the titles with "just legal" on the box, and starlets with bald pussies, flat chests, and looking prepubescent.
Sure some barely legals are hot and all, but shit, one day earlier and it woulda been statutory rape in most states.
I think the age for fucking on camrea should be raised significently.

I think it's basically a no-brainer it should be raised. I mean, I like the hot 18 year-olds as much as the next guy, but please, it's common sense that most of them aren't going to have the maturity to make a good decision with respect to entering the porn industry or not. What bothers me most is that a stupid decision made at 18 can follow them around for the rest of their lives. Once those scenes have been shot - they're out there for all to see and they aren't going away.

If it was raised what do you do about all the 18-20 year olds that are already in the business. Do you grandfather them in like states did when drinking ages were raised or do you say hit the bricks kid?
i have always said it should raise the industry age to 21 but Sasha grey has made me doubt that real bad .... it woudl be a shame if she could not work yet so i am not sure what i tihnk any more on the subject

I vote for 16, I moved to my own place at that time and had to do my own laundry! Now people say 18 is too young for porn? P-lease...

How about letting girls as young as 17 get into porn?? Todays younger women are more socially skilled at getting into the industry. Hell, have you seen the girls on myspace.com ?? These laws and rules/ regulations are just another way to keep good talent from becoming discovered due to age...what dont we just go back to the good old days and regulate pornography based on race also??? Its a joke...Lower the legal status for adult actresses . If letting 16 year olds get their drivers permit is acceptable , then why not also allow young girls to get into the industry with some help and guidence by older woman in the porno biz like...Nina Hartley :)
Nina Hartleys school of adult film making, now accepting younger recuits
Thanks for the compliment, Rage, but I would have zero interest in giving instruction to or working with girls below the legal age limit. under any circumstances.
And while I've come to accept that girls will start in this business on their eighteenth birthdays, and I wouldn't favor a higher mandatory minimum age than that set by law, I do wish more of them would wait until they knew their own sexuality better and had a fuller appreciation of the impact porn will have on their lives before throwing themselves into it headlong (no pun intended).
I agree! It is important, crucial really that young women should be prepared physically, psychologically, and be in tune with their sexuality. Just because I entered when I was freshly 18 does not mean that I recommend it to every girl who wants to be a porn star. I'm not being hypocritical, but we already have enough young immature drama, and 21-year-old retired porn-junkies. Everyone matures differently. Thank You Nina, you are an inspiration to us all!
I'm delighted to have been an inspiration to you, Sasha. I've heard a lot of great things about you and I can tell by your comments that you've thoroughly thought through your participation in this business. I have no doubt that you'll continue to thrive here and I look forward to working with you at the first opportunity.
I really want to suggest 16 but I am trying to "hold in" a lot of thoughts that are on my mind. If you really think that 16 is too low then I guess that most of the people are not aware that in a lot of countries 16 is the age of consent. Basicaly the age of consent is 16 but to be in porn you gotta be 18. To me this is kinda stupid since by fucking and getting paid is far more better than just getting fucked for free. And you also gotta think about these girls, because they need the money to eat and live. Every country just follows USA in term the "legal age to be in the jizz biz". It like a global standard which it is since a lot of porno movies come here to USA from Europe, Asia and other places. Let's just make it 16 and close this subject - we gotta start like a petition or a vote for this thing, we gotta do it globaly so everyone would agree on it. Yeye, the whole thing with the psychics, that porn is bad for young girls and that they develop issues, so what? I guees that these girls would rather prefer money than getting starved while working at the minimum-wage, dead end jobs. Sooner or later they will get 2 and 3 dicks showed up their tiny assholes, why not start making money earlier than later? Republicans and conservatives won't like this/

Sooner or later the goo will flow...out of the gape!
It is MUCH too easy for women to get into porn nowadays. For Christ's sake, you don't even have to look good, or know how to have sex!!! (Trust me, I know more than a few virgins who busted their cherries on camera, and have sent home more than a few less-than-sexually-arousing young women after viewing rather misleading photos from their "agents".)
The difference between sex for free and sex for money (in the case of porn) is the accountability and visible record of said act. I believe 18 is too early to be making a decision about the rest of your life that may only benefit you for a few months, as the average career span of the random porn actress is about six months.
Yes, there are a lot of 16-year-olds who look and behave like 22-year-olds... but if 22 is what you're looking for, get a 22-year-old, pervert!
Now, if you really want to a)"protect" the young delicate ignorant flowers as they make potentially disastrous decisions, and b) get some quality, passionate talent, raise the price of their FIRST AIM test to $800.00, roughly equal to their earnings for a scene. If you have to save up for a month or two to even enter the industry, you're gonna put some thought into it! Industry people, imagine what this would do!
16 is the legal age you have to be before you can consent to sex WITH ANOTHER PERSON BETWEEN AGES 16 AND 18. At least, that's the law here, so I assume it's the same there. You can't have sex with someone who's over 18 until you are infact 18 yourself.
Therefore, the law of 18 for porn performance makes sense.
I'd say 90%+ of girls that get into porn at 18 are extremely naive and don't even think about their futures. Mainly because they're not mature enough.
It may be cool for you, Constant Viewer, who wants to see young, new, fresh talent, but it's a pain in the ass for [invalid URL removed]directors that want to make a quality scene and those of who want to see a quality scene.
More time = more maturity. More maturity = better quality art/product.
See: GILFs.

Whatever, I am tired of this childish bs. I say 16 and that's it. Dont like it then whatever, I dont care for you, I like em' young and thats it. Theyre just pleasure meat to me, like it or hate it, agree or disagree but this is my saying.
Back on topic, does it really matter how old a girl is? I want to post this as a poll, but I can't post a new topic . I know there's endless discussions about girls starting young and then being past their prime, whatever, but you have girls who are 25 playing '18 yr old virgin next door,' and can you tell the difference anyway if it's fantasy? Does anyone research a performer's age before they elect to watch one of their scenes?
