most of the time most of us I presume(here in the U.S.) never type www as part of a URL. No problem as we still get to our websites. But does anybody notice that when trying to download a foreign site with the suffixes .de, .co.uk, .br etc we have to actually type out www or the site won't download?

That's an individual choice, made when setting up the DNS records.

www might be required more often with European sites, but I haven't noticed it myself.
With Danish sites, I rarely enter the www.
