In Inferno 5, the lustful Francesca speaks of "Love" and blames a book for their indiscretions. In Purgatory 26, the equally lustful Guido clearly states that he is a sinner. Francesca is damned because her lust blinded her to heavenly love, and because she blamed her sin on others– not because she sinned. Francesca chooses to spend eternity in Paolo's embrace rather than facing the fires of Purgatory. Guido was not blind to heavenly love, and welcomes the fires of purgatory. If Valentina is counted among the blessed, no doubt the purging fires will burn her spirit to the core, but I don't consider her sins graver than any mortal's. Edited to add: In fact, the entire premise of The Comedy is that Dante's sins are so grave that he– alone among all the blessed souls who ever lived– had to visit Hell in his fleshy body before he could choose Heaven over Hell. I would argue that the Poem's narrator is still a sinner, and that the Poet knows that even though the Narrator has climbed the Mountain once, he will need to do it again. None of us could possibly get it , and our teacher knew , but he also knew some of us would be caught by it , I was one of them I still remember the beginning of Mark Anthony's speech Friends, Romans, Countrymen ,lend me your ears I came to bury Caesar not to praise him his use of nasal sounds (n,m and so) and the recurrent R made it unforgettable for me, it sound very vibrant and powerful. His interpretation of Paradise 33 is stunning, at least to foreign ears. I understand he plans to do a movie. A number of people have done Inferno, but I think this may be the first full cinematic treatment of the whole Comedy. Benigni seems to really love the poem, so I'm interested to see what he does. It is almost as Shakespeare read with a southern states American English accent compared a Received Pronunciation British English it is so different that I believe even a native would want to hear it in such a proper accent same for us , the Comedy read in Florentine accent is not the same as in any other Another version of the same part is that of Vittorio Gassman who was born in Genua I think the difference might be caught even for non Italian speakers (from minute 2.53) Edited by - LCF on 10/7/2013 10:54:31 AM [Link] |

At one point, they had a famous British actor read a speech, and then had a scholar of Elizabethan English phonetics read the same speech in an appropriate Elizabethan dialect (Shakespeare supposedly had a special gift for fitting his poetry to the dialect of his characters). It was mind-boggling how much better it sounded in Elizabethan English. I didn't know that Benigni is Florentine. I checked out a number of other recitations, and didn't think any of them came close to Benigni's. I'm sure the fact that he is a trained and gifted actor doesn't hurt. I searched and found my place in the text, and continued to listen. For the first time, I felt pity for Francesca. In English, I understood– intellectually– that the Pilgrim pitied her, but while hearing Benigni read it, a tear filled my eye and I needed to wipe it away. The emotional reaction aided my intellectual understanding. At the end, Benigni reads: Mentre che l’uno spirto questo disse, And all the while one spirit (Francesca) uttered this, Then he pauses, and continues: l’altro piangëa; sì che di pietade io venni men così com’ io morisse. E caddi come corpo morto cade. The other one did weep so, that, for pity, I swooned away as if I had been dying, And fell, even as a dead body falls. The pause breaks the story so that when he says, "the other one", you are a little confused, "Who is the other one?" On every previous reading, I assumed "The other one" was Paolo. But I now see it could also be the Pilgrim (for is he not also a spirit). This confusion of Dante and Paolo adds power to the subsequent suggestion that the Pilgrim has done more than faint, but has fallen into sin. I would also add that the words "corpo morto cade" have a poetry that is not captured by "dead body falls". [Link] |

As "corpo morto" is an Italian expression literally translated as dead body but it means actually to fall as a body with no life , a rock , a dead man or someone who fainted and this latter was the case of Dante who pitied the two who went to Inferno out of absolute Love It is also used to describe someone who runs into things "a corpo morto" means with complete dedication and with no second thoughts As for the society it was divided between Guelfi and Ghibellini and then btween Guelfi Bianchi and Guelfi Neri , roughly they were political positions ,now it is way worse. Is it possible that Dante's phrasing has worked its way so deeply into the Italian language that people no longer realize they are quoting him? He is the Narrator, a fictional character who is sharing his memories of the Pilgrimage. He is the Poet, the real person who wrote the poem. I often make the distinction to avoid confusion, but in this case, I clearly sowed confusion. I think the distinction is especially important in Hell, for the Pilgrim still has much to learn, and Francesca is among the most seductive of the damned spirits he encounters. I have no doubt the Narrator is referring to Paolo, but I suspect the Poet wanted to suggest that maybe the Pilgrim (or Virgil, or even the reader) wept as well. Whether this reading is appropriate or not, Benigni's long pause before speaking the words "the other one" led me to question who that other one might be, and it added to my feeling of pity for Dante as he fell. It's different strokes for different folks, which I get but if a girl's going to get it up the ass for a scene I would prefer for a majority of it to be from a real cock. A strap-on is great, don't get me wrong, but when most of the anal action Valentina got was from the strap-on and only 5 minutes or so at the beginning with Ramon, again I found it somewhat frustrating. I can see Valentina enjoying herself and by rights that alone should get me off, but I couldn't help but notice most of the time the strap-on was more or less sitting in her ass without much penetration or movement which in the end just feels rather ineffective, despite the obvious pleasure it was giving Valentina. Again, I think this another element that contributed to my frustration. The DP action was pretty good but for me personally, an opportunity was missed to have Ramon in her ass rather than the strap-on. It could have at least been alternated at some point but sadly this never came. In hindsight, these personal issues would have been resolved as a BG or BBG scene. Still, you can't win them all and even the hottest, most beautiful girls in the world will not get you off with every single scene they do. It's rare but it happens, according to what we like to get off to and what we can't get off to, for whatever reason. Here, it was just a case of more things I cannot get off to outweighing the things that I can, despite Valentina's magnificent screen presence.
