I'm not able to play my copy of 'L.A. Fashion Girls' from VCA anymore cause there are a some matte areas in the refective layer of the DVD. I'm not able to polish it, cause it's under the PVC layer. The same for 'Smokin' Sextions' from Elegant Angel.
Ok, the titles are released for 4 or 5 year now, but I think this doesn't speak for the lifetime of a DVD.

Hi,
Well, i guess your msg would be better in the "tech talk area". :) Anyway, the lifespan of a DVD is still to be experienced. I once read some things that could have someone worrying but that has to be seen. If the DVD is
not glued togehter right at the edges oxygen could get in and a oxidation process could harm the dvd.

I recently read an article talking about chemical interactions between the components in the DVD 'sandwich' ruining the discs. This is independent of oxygen or any other foreign matter getting into the layers. The gist of the article is that nobody knows what the lifetime of a DVD is.

Since the tech industries are constantly working to replace current technologies, I reckon those DVD's are going to be obsolete whether the physical media survives or not. As far as I'm concerned, your experience just validates the value and need for a method of backing up your DVD's.

Isn't this called DVD rot?

I have a similar experience with a batch of CD's I burnt (data only). They were all from the same batch, all 10 of them. All my other CDs are fine. I guess something went wrong during the production of the problematic batch.
