No. We claim no ownership. It's interesting that you came to that conclusion.
We do however claim ownership of the bandwidth we pay for. If the image is served from our server it's OK to watermark it. We also digitally wash out the image and reduce the image quality to shitty levels. We do this as a deterrent for people hoping to use our servers as a free location to host images for use on other sites. I think we have a pretty reasonable approach to this.

I do understand the bandwidth issue. I never thought of using watermarks to deter outside live linking. Watermarks are also a way to claim ownership, to denote copyright or protect the interests of the uploader. Being a n00b, I didn't realize the watermarks were temporary overlays. Thanks for the explanation.
