Hi AdultDVDTalk members,

Wanted to introduce myself. I am Joe Blow, DVD reviewer at AdultDVDempire (not to be confused with JoeBlow69 (the gay dvd porn reviewer from adultdvdtalk)). Just curious what you people look for/like to see in a good dvd review. Lots of detail? More overall impression? Technical matters? etc.

In the meantime, does anybody have some good Tera Patrick suggestions. I reviewed her work in UP & CUMMERS 73 and absolutely loved it (check my review review). I also got to meet her the other week in L.A. at a Tom Leykis party. She is just as stunning in person (and very nice as well). Ok, thanks for your time. Later.

Hello, Joe Blow! Glad to see a fellow Empire reviewer participating in this fine forum.

Glad you got to meet Tera...isn't she amazing in person! I've already written my tribute to her here . I'm sure she has printed it out and kept this love letter near and dear to her heart...

Personally, I like to see a lot of overall impressions and mentions of standout scenes or actors (or crappy scenes and actors if that applies). But the impressions need to be supported with enough detail that I know the reviewer was thinking about it.

What I can't stand are reviews that are so generic, unsupported, or gushing with superlatives that you could paste the review copy on practically any DVD. And I don't find a lot of value in play-by-play reviews either. I know that some people really want to know if actress X performs sexual act Y with actor Z, but as far as I'm concerned, box scores don't describe the game.

I'd like to see more technical detail about the DVDs themselves (since DVD and VHS are usually different in quality, content, and value). Maybe not to the level that mainstream DVDs are critiqued, but DVD reviews should be more than just a review on the main feature.

Just my two cents,

- Saki

I like to read about details and about the tech stuff, only if it is bad etc... "hardly any light" besides stuff like that. i am good to go. but that is me. others may like all the tech stuff.

Just try a few styles and maybe put a counter and see if more people enjoy your different styles.

Hey Joe. Welcome to Adult DVD Talk. I haven't seen much of Tera's stuff, but I've heard great things about all of her Adam & Eve stuff. I really liked Fire & Ice and most everybody else seems to enjoy Sex Island and Caribbean Undercover.

Reviews - I like to know who's pairing up. If I really like a performer and I know they're in more than one scene I'm usually more anxious to buy it that way. I also like to know about the extras and the technical aspects. If it wasn't for the extras and technical aspects, some studios like Cabellero, might appear to put out good DVDs rather than the mediocre to piss poor DVDs I normally see from them. Of course, good and bad standout scenes should also always be mentioned. Thanks for caring about writing up great reveiews!

Joe: I like to see information on the technical values at least as much as any other single factor. Way too often, reviews, online and off, spend virtually no time on this yet find the time to write hundreds of words (or more) detailing the angles/blow by blow/splooge by splooge actions of the performers. Now I've been told that a lot of people want to hear the specifics-in order, for how long, etc-of oral/RC/Missionary/Doggie/rimming/anal/RC Anal, and you may want to go that route instead (it's easier to write about objective actions instead of provide a critical analysis).

So, to be helpful, provide: who pairs with whom, technical quality, overall feel, anything outstanding or gross, if you want me to buy something. Provide more detailed information about production date/length/director/etc, if you want me to use it as a resource.

On Tera: I think she's a fine looking woman. I've seen a lot of her stuff though and she isn't the best performer on the market. Which of her movies is the "best" is way too subjective a question without a bit more detail.

Keep up the good work-I hope to read some of your reviews soon. BTW, does Empire have a means for searching by reviewer yet? It would help me focus in on the reviewers I've learned to trust vs the ones I don't. Thanks!

PS: Always try and add some humor to your reviews-read most of the reviews by Astro or Endorphin to see what I mean.

I thought I heard that Adult DVD Empire will be implementing a way to search reviews by reviewer. However, I have no idea when they will start doing it. Hopefully soon.

Somethings I don't often see and would love to are: the director listed, actual running time , original year of release and comments on missing footage , i.e. if anything is has been cut from the original release. I like the classics and want to know if I'm buying an unedited version or not. A complete list of actors in the film is also great.

Black, keep in mind that some of those facts are not as easy to find out as they should be. I've seen 3 or 4 different dates listed for movies (the box info will vary from the credits which will vary from the copyright which will vary from the VHS version, etc.) and a number of low end studio's don't list directors. Heck, some of the directors, like Ron Jeremy, have a bunch of aliases (I found this out when I reviewed those Leisure Time/Venus releases).

Missing footage is also tough because how many of us can remember the original version of a movie-particularly if it was 20 years ago-when the companies still don't acknowledge that cuts are made (most of the time). Of the zillion members and lurkers here, how many can say they've seen the original fisting scene in Candy Stripers? (that scene was cut from the videotape version over 20 years ago)

Brawn, I've read most of the reviews on this site (and a lot of them elsewhere as well) and can't think of a single case where someone sounded like they had a PhD. If you would be so kind as to provide a few examples, I'd be appreciative.

I agree with you on humor but wonder what you mean with regard to ego. Remember, these reviews, on ADT at least, are reflective of a number of styles. Is it egotistical to point out major flaws in the picture quality? How about if a person is looking worse than you've seen them elsewhere? I've been accused of having a big ego a few times, as have others, and I'd like to see a few examples of what is meant by that. Unless a reviewer sticks with a purely objective format, which is boring most of the time, someone, somewhere will see it as a case of "ego".

I did like the review in question though. He's known for that and I always like his style even when I disagree with him.

Endo, your reviews are always clever, witty and fun to read. It's not a contest as to who's reviews are the cleverest, wittiest, or most fun though. (at least no ones told me about any contests-LMK) While researching a movie late last night, 2 Cocks In Every Hole which sounds like a takeoff on a Beach Boys song, I found out how little some of the most prolific/learned/highly regarded reviewers out there knew about the original movies the scenes were from. The reviews, on the few movies that had actual reviews, looked to be a VCA_Rules style paragraph. It made me feel a lot more secure regarding some of my earlier (and current) reviews.

Just keep up the good work and provide the rest of us with your fun reviews.

far be it for me to be critical of anyone who puts the effort in to write a review.....however!....

)the quality of the DVD video is important. I've rented some DVD's that had video quality that was less then a good VHS tape.

)What actually happened in a specific scene. I think a review is rather worthless that will, for instance, say there is some anal in a movie and not specifically say which scene and actress participated. Be specific about the action.

)list the studs/props as well. I absolutely detest Steve Hatcher and would like to know if he is in a scene....it will impact my shopping decisions.

Sorry, this might have been covered already, but I'm sickly right now and not wanting to read a whole lot.

What I really like the most is a scene breakdown, similar to how LSB does his VHS reviews. I like to find the scenes quickly and read over them to see what happens. If all the scenes have some nasty anal or something I really don't like, then I know not to buy.

I enjoy reading about the quality of the movie (audio/video) as well as the appearence of the actors. I really don't need to have a scene by scene description, unless it is something really different. BUT I do like the raincoat factor. Sometimes I just skim down to that to see how hot the sex really is.

I guess I am in the minority here when I say that I don't really care about the picture quality, unless it is truly horrible. I want reviews to say who is paired with whom, whether there is anal, and to mention anything noteworthy (say, anal or G-G from performers who usually don't engage in these activities). I also want to know what the reviewer felt from watching the video/dvd, was it excitement, boredom, something in between?

HoustonDon I realize that the info (runtime, edited scenes, directors, etc.) can be hard to come by but I feel it is important. I believe a good reviewer should take the time to research a movie, not just throw down their opinions. Maybe I'm crazy (heard that one before) but classics of porn should be approached the same way classic Hollywood films are. (NOTE: What I mean be this is the respect.)

Another reason I feel this is important is because you are right when you say companies don't acknowledge cuts and people don't remember. We need to save this info before it completely dissappears. We need to document this history before it's lost forever!

Black, I agree which is why I try and include anything I can about such things in my reviews. The problem with edits, in particular, is that few reliable sources for them exists. I've had people swear that something was cut but the length was the same as the original. Porn archivists, and I count the folks at RAME/IAFD as such, do a very good job but especially on older stuff-it's a mixed bag at times.

Classics: I like the classics as much as anyone. I grew up watching the porn of the 70's and 80's at the beginning or the VCR revolution (they were in Beta and VHS back then). I can't in all honesty tell someone a movie is great if the dvd mastering sucks, there are no extra's, and it looks really lame. I tipped my hat to Deep Throat in regards to it's classic nature and got a kick in the head by some nutjob too. People see what they want to see and ignore the facts too often. Oh well.
