Are men really that slimey? I mean presented with an opportunity they will cheat? Regardless of how you feel about your partner?
What is a womyn supposed to do? Put a leash on her man?
Wow, I am so glad I trust my lover explicitly. I asked cause I have always been curious, I guess I am even more fortunate than I realised.

Depends on the relationship and on the man. To me it seems obvious which men are cheaters and which aren't. I think many girls choose to be blinded 'cause they don't want to know.
I couldn't be in a relationship where I even had to question whether or not my man was cheating.
Some men do it out of unhappiness in their relationship, some do it out of unhappiness with themselves. The same reasons that women do it. I cheated on one past boyfriend and told him the next day. I did it because I was young and gutless - afraid to leave him and be on my own. I wanted to be single and have fun with guys in bars (18 year old type stuff.)
I don't think men do it any more than women.

Boredom?
Looking for something new?
I guess it's one of those things I don't really want to understand.

Lack of honor and respect, I'd say...
He(loosely defined) obviously doesn't respect his woman. He also doesn't honor the relationship or the bonds they have between them.
But, then again, the behavior I've witnessed from the men around me while growing up makes me think that the men who have the capability for that honor and respect are few and far between. I actually know someone who cheated on his wife, in their bed, while she was at the hospital giving birth to their child. That really warped my fragile little mind.
I'm actually paranoid about it to this day. It takes a hellacious amount of time for me to trust anyone NOT to cheat on me.
But, in all fairness, I think as long as a man is getting what he needs at home, he won't stray too far. Yeah, I know, I'm a girl, I shouldn't say that. But, I'm also not a fool...most of the instances of cheating I've seen(with married men) have occured because they simply aren't getting what they need at home. MOST, I say, not all.
Getting off the soapbox now.

Not for anything.. but cheating is NOT limited to men.. I know quite a few female cheaters too... So men AND womyn BOTH stray occasionally, for what reasons, I guess there are many..

Thanks for the opinions, I have always wanted to understand that.

People cheat for a variety of reasons. Not getting enough at home, break the monotony, try something new, the thrill of being caught, etc.
Mostly, I think they cheat because they want something to change. Anything. They get tired of what they're used to, and they want to change something about their lives. They think having and affair will do it. They may be right.
It just usually isn't a happy change. It rarely works out well for any party. Trust me, I know.

My cousin cheated on his wife the day she was giving birth to his daughter. He bragged to me about it. The woman he had sex with was the wife of a friend of mine.
I would never do that because I would not want to hurt my friend, Reggie.

One could just as easily ask what makes women cheat? The answer is not gender-specific but more likely is individual, that is, some individual women share the same reasons as some men. It's more of a personality than a gender issue.

No primate on this planet is monogamous... We are biologically predisposed to fuck everything we can...
Our intellect and reason CAN sometimes overcome that... But not as often as the human race might like to think...
Besides... fucking is FUN! You want to have as much fun as you can, don't you?

+1. Simply said, it's biology.
All women should understand and appreciate that by being monogamous for a woman, a man must go against all of the forces of human nature to do so.
Biologically speaking, men can (theoretically) conceive a hundred children in a single month, if every load found a worthy egg. (I'm good for a few loads a day, and I'm 40!) On the flip side, women can procreate once a month, and only for a couple of days within that month.
To put it another way:
From a conception point of view, the human woman is only interested in a single man and the best one she can find (genetically speaking). Hence, the notion of monogamy is introduced into modern culture.
However, from a conception point of view, the human male knows that it's a numbers game... that the odds of his sperm finding a worthy egg are minuscule, unless he fertilizes as many women as possible.
Therefore, by being faithful, women should understand that a man is indeed cheating... that is, cheating Darwin and human nature. Monogamy is the most powerful gift a man can give a woman, because it's is such a struggle against the laws of human nature. But still they want a ring on top of it!

^That's got to be the biggest load of crap I've ever heard.
True. But it is also true that men tend to cheat for different reasons than women do. When men cheat, it is usually solely for physical/sexual reasons. In other words, a happily married man sees an attractive woman who is not his wife, gets sexually turned on, and decides to fuck her without any emotional attachment to her whatsoever.
When women cheat, however, it is usually not solely physical, but for emotional reasons. While a man can be in a perfectly happy relationship and still decide to cheat simply because he finds another woman who makes his dick hard, a woman will usually only cheat if she is indeed unhappy in her relationship. It is much more likely that happiness in one's relationship has more of an effect of the decision of women to cheat than it does on the decision of men to cheat.
With men, it's all about sex. With women, it's usually about filling an emotional void that's not being filled in her relationship (e.g., not receiving enough attention; not feeling loved; feeling betrayed; victimized by abuse, etc.) This is not to say that women don't also cheat just because they want to get laid, but it is generally not nearly as common of a reason as it is with men.

Obviously, you are not familiar with Darwin's "Origin of Species." It's one of the most important scientific texts of the 20th Century. You should check it out. I am not condoning cheating. I'm simply stating that it is not the natural state for the human male. This not an opinion; it's a simple and scientific fact. Therefore, if you choose to refute it, you need to do so with scientific facts.
Understand that evolutionary speaking, there is no such thing as an accident. If you have another explanation why a man can conceive hundreds of children (or dozens, conservatively speaking) in a single month, while a woman, only one, please state it.
Unless of course, you don't believe in evolution; in which case, I've wasted my time with you.

As I stated earlier, I totally disagree. Like I said, the reasons are personality/situational driven more than gender driven. The old stereotypical adage is that women cheat to gain the emotional fulfillment they are not getting within their relationship. While that may be true, and you did leave some room for agreement for that in the last part of your post, it is far and away not overwhelmingly the predominent force for women. With more women feeling less surpressed, gaining financial, professional and social inderpendence their sexual behavior is proximating that of men and the rate of infidelity for strictly physical reasons is rising drastically. I know! I associate with a lot of married women or those in "committed" relationships who dabble in occasional indiscretions and still maintain their relationship. In the same way, although not as prevalent, there are some men who will retreat into extra-marital relationships for the sake of gaining the emotional suport that is not available from their committed partner.

If human nature can be cheated, then apparently it isn't as fixed as you seem to believe.
Darwin would have laughed at the notion that he could be "cheated". Evidence that runs contrary to a theory requires adjustment of the theory.
It never ceases to amaze me that so many people with no training in physical or cultural anthropology feel entitled to spout their facile formulations about how evolution "dictates" this or that human behavior.

There is absolutely no evidence that runs contrary to the theory. It's widely accepted (and common sense) what while societal changes can occur quickly (sometimes even immediately), evolutionary changes take tens of thousands of years. Today's Man is essentially the same, biologically speaking, as a Homo Sapien from 25,000 years ago. However, we know that there are been many societies and civilizations during that period, not all of them dictating that the male should be monogamous.
Just because society temporarily dictates a certain behavior, one can not expect evolution to respond. (Especially if that expected behavior is largely ignored secretly.)
Yes, if there were such thing as a monogamous gene (I don't believe there is, but let's say there is or one occurred through a mutation) and the fittest of women were somehow able to detect this gene in males, then in theory, monogamy would become an evolutionary change in the Homo Sapien species after tens of thousands of years of Natural Selection.
If anyone cares to provide an alternate scientific hypothesis for why Homo Sapien males search for multiple sex partners, I am open to hearing it.

A theory has already been provided: Men (and women) cheat because they choose to. It has nothing to do with evolution, which only applies to biological changes within species over time. Evolution does not dictate the ability or inability of humans to be monogamous. There were monogamous men 25,000 years ago, just as there were polygamous men 25,000 years ago. That has not changed. You're right that there is no monogamy gene. There isn't a polygamy one either. A man is not doing a woman any special favors just because he decides to remain faithful to her. That is indeed a load of crap.

This is like saying, fish choose to swim. If you don't believe in Darwin's theory of natural selection, then just say so.
If you believe in Evolution, then the every aspect of the current state of any successful species can be attributed to Theory of Evolution.
Yes, there is. Every human male has it. It's what causes men to constantly look at women. If you didn't have it, you wouldn't even be on this board.
I never said anything about "special favors." (My allusions to women being thankful for monogamy were meant as tongue-in-cheek, in case you missed that. However, the facts surrounding those statements are accurate.)
If you have such free choice; then you could simply be able to choose to stop looking at sexy women. Can you do that? No, of course not. Because you have no free will to override human nature. Yes, a man can exorcise free-will to ignore (or attempt to) the temptation to spread his seed throughout as many female partners as possible, but you can't erase the temptation.
This temptation is the part that is inbred into the current Homo Sapien male, and to deny this is pure ignorance.

Well, it sounds like semantics to me, but I can sign off on that.
Let's say, it's an aspect of Homo Sapien that in order to proliferate, the male is "predisposed" towards polygamy in order to give his bloodline the highest chance of continued survival. The female of the species is "predisposed" to secure a single male with the strongest gene-pool she can find.
It is these predispositions that cause some men to cheat, and some women to seek monogamous relationships.

I also think it's a matter of semantics. It seems like what you are really trying to say is that human males may be "predisposed" to seeking several sex partners, which is not the same as cheating. This thread asks the question, "What makes a man cheat?," not "What makes a man want to fuck anything that fogs a mirror?" Infidelity and promiscuity are two different things. The latter only becomes the former once you have committed yourself to one partner. If a person wants to act single, then just stay single.
Fish gotta swim. Birds gotta fly. But men don't have to cheat on their partners. You cannot compare a requirement for survival to a deliberate choice.
Yes. But I don't choose to.
Does this mean that all temptation is natural?

Men have the same predisposition to steal from their neighbors as they do to cheat on their wives.
The scientific name for this phenomenon is, "I want what I want and I don't give a fuck as long as I can get away with it."
Don't try to call Charles Darwin as a character witness when you're in the dock.

That's actually a very interesting observation, and I gave it some thought. Man may have a predisposition to steal, which I think is also in the same bucket as the predisposition for War. However, those predispositions are different as they don't directly relate to Natural Selection and the proliferation of the species and bloodline.
You seem to have a tendency to think of humans as somehow "non-animal," which is very confusing for me.

Cheating is not the proclivity of just males.
I think it has much to do with the cheater's self image. Often cheaters have a strong commitment to their SO's (I'm not sure that I want to call it love). They have, what others might think is the perfect relationship, but develop an unconscious sense that they are unworthy of the relationship, and set out to destroy it. So they cheat.
Cheating itself is not some sort of biological imperative. It is a social one. Marriage, though it is not really being discussed here, IMHO, is at it's heart a method by which wealth is transferred between generations, within a society. Cheating puts a big strain on the legitimacy of that transfer of wealth, so society, by and large discourages it.

Cheating is innate in both sexes. Neither gender has a monopoly. I like this explanation from Animal husbandry. Old-Cow-New-Cow theory. Cheating has absolutely nothing to do with love.

People who haven't cheated simply have not found the right person at the right time. He/she is out there waiting.

I guess that depends on your definition of "animal" and all that it entails.
The ways that humans are similar to other living creatures is fairly obvious. I'm more interested in the ways that we are different. To my way of thinking, the impulse to minimize those differences is the enemy of civilization.

As I said love has nothing to do with it. We are conflating the strong emotion (love) with a strong physical reaction (lust). There is no reason to believe a person who cheats doesn't love their significant other as much as one who hasn't cheated yet. Married and faithful is the ideal we strive for in a civilized society. It makes for good neighbors and working relationships. In reality, and the numbers bear me out, everyone would cheat given the right person and the right circumstances.
I don't see any reason for that to cause anyone any great concern in their personal relationship. As a matter of fact I see it as liberating. The person I love had a hour of weakness and satisfied a hunger by eating an entire 1/2 gal. of cookie dough. It doesn't mean she doesn't love me. If she loves me she'll make sure i never find out. I'll make it easy by not searching for evidence.

The current statistic in the U.S. is (I believe) that roughly 50% of married or formerly married men admit that they cheated on their wives at some point in time. I'm not aware of any statistics that could possibly bear out your much more ambitious hypothetical claim.
I don't sense scientific objectivity.

Surely when 50% of married men are willing to admit that they cheat. There is another, if only tiny percentage, who do at one time or another. Some do it once, then spend the rest of their life consumed by unnecessary guilt. If the special circumstance occurs and one find themselves in bed with that one person who proved irresistible. Wouldn't it be better to admit to the weakness and carry on with ones otherwise happy life
. Hollywood tells us we should confess to our loved one and accept their decisions. Hollywood tells the aggrieved partner she/he has been betrayed and should be humiliated. Ridiculous. Nothing of the sort has happened. Nothing that one should be humiliated about. Reality of the situation is your S.O. has had a casual sexual relation and it hurts, but they are not the kind of person who seek serial sexual encounters. So buck up these things happen.
I sometimes think that this hardened attitude toward what is essentially a very widespread practice is a holdover from tribal times when it would be thought of as a misuse of resource if one knowing raised a "Red-headed" stepchild. In those times I'm sure the person would have faced public scorn. Maybe its a feminine issue. Women find it threatening to their "nest" and a drain on resources that properly belong to her and her offspring. In any event in my most humble opinion, monogamy is a social construct, albeit a powerful one.

A myriad of reasons make a man cheat. 99% of them are purely physical.
Opportunity and low-risk equal a sure-fire cheat. If say Patricia Petite would offer some head, who would refuse? I wouldn't even though I'm happily married for many years. If there was virtually no risk involved I would do it.

As others have said, there are undoubtedly many different reasons a man will actually break down and cheat.
But...
If you want one consistent thing that will tend to wear down even the men who are most determined to remain faithful, I would say that it's the desirability of the man in question. If he's a very desirable male, he's going to have much more temptation in the form of women (And sometimes men) actually making passes at him. This isn't to say every man will eventually cheat. Rather, that the temptation will be great, as there will undoubtedly be some very desirable women among those who will be a little too friendly with him.
Another thing I would say has a lot to do with it is if a man gets married when he's still immature and/or inexperienced. He gets a little older and he realizes he didn't bother to "shop around". A man who's seen the world and had his fun before he gets married is usually more ready to settle down when he finally does. If a guy marries the first girl who gives him some, he's probably going to be curious about other women sooner or later.
But finally - The ultimate thing that causes more cheating than anything is a person whose word means nothing. Someone who's shifty, sneaky and insincere. An individual who doesn't at least try to be honest in all things will always be more likely to cheat. That sounds obvious and it is but it's amazing how many people just don't get it.

If there's a strong, emotional attachment involved, the guy's less likely to cheat (i.e. the woman really shows her adoration and romantic interest in her man.) I like women who are somewhat needy and clingy (not to be mistaken for "high maintenance," which is entirely different) since it makes me feel more desired and important in her life.
Personally, I think both sexes are likely to cheat equally given opportunity and/or alcohol (or both.) Women are suckers for romance, and men are suckers for pretty women who make advances or flirt.
I don't believe any relationship is rock solid. We're only human and our desires and weakness will sometimes get the better of us, no matter how much we love someone. FYI, I've never cheated on any of my committed girlfriends, but if I met Stormy Daniels in a bar and she was horny and asked me to fuck her... I don't know what I'd do. If Brad Pitt was in a bar and he asked your girlfriend/wife to have sex with him, what do you think she'd do? Yup...and you'd never know about it. :)

One question: If you are seperated from your partner half a year, and you got a lot of opportunities but laways pass, but then paying someone for having sex with you (because there areno feelings involved) also cheating? Or is it more like a massage you get, kinda service?
