I don't know. Vivid movies just seem not-as-good for some odd reason despite the fact that they've got the best looking women in porn. I bought Deep Inside April, Devon, & Chasey Lain. After watching the April and Devon discs, I guess the quality and the length seem redited and shortened. Can somebody explain why their videos aren't as great as most adult movies are?

You raise a concern about Vivid compilations that has been expressed before, they do appear to be cutting up the scenes.
However, your question seems to indicate a blanket condemnation of their movies. Are you talking about production values, or content? If you're talking about content, then the only explanation is that you don't fit their target audience profile. I'm sure their target audience is very happy with their product, otherwise they wouldn't be in business still, after all these years.

To each his own. There are obviously enough people who like Vivid movies or aren't exposed to other studios. Vivid is unapologetic about the style of porn it produces and clearly is trying to appeal to the mass market by means of satellite and pay cable. To that end, the hardcore and the quality take back seat to the marketing and the markets.

It's a well-known fact that a number of Vivid DVDs are edited from their VHS original releases. Reasons people give for that are primarily to make room for their DVD extras or because once a title goes to catalog (i.e. is not a new release), it's re-edited to fit on less costly VHS tapes. Since they'd already re-edited a lot of masters before DVD became popular, there was not a lot of motivation to go back and re-edit. Remember, Vivid has hundreds, if not thousands, of movies and videos in its catalog.

I've given up a long time ago trying to understand Vivid. They are satisfied with their product, and there's too much porn out there for me to spend time asking why.

Finally, from a moderator's standpoint, please avoid the use of inflammatory subjects for threads. It's not necessary and only serves to become a magnet for a moderator.

Vivid doesn't have to worry about pleasing the more "hardcore" fan - they've got such a lock on the "couples" market and the ol' pay-per-view hotel thing, that they really don't need to risk things by making their movies more "hardcore".

In other words, why mess with success? I agree most of their films don't appeal to me...but lets be honest, nine times out of ten, your first exposure to porn is probably going to be a film from Vivid.

You know, I still enjoy some of Vivid's releases. This from a man who thinks Heavy Metal is a great movie and whose last purchase what Whack Attack 15. Go figure.

Say what you will, but Vivid is great when you want to introduce your wife or girlfriend to porn. There's plenty of other stuff out there if you don't like it.

I hardly consider Vivid to be a crap studio. Let's look at a few facts:

1) First and foremost, Vivid makes a LOT of money. It is a well run business that has a very strong niche. They have monopolized the market within their niche. Hardly what I would consider a crap move.

2) They have signed what may arguably be the strongest stable of performers in porno today. Hardly a crap move.

3) They are extremely prolific in their production output. Hardly what I would perceive from a crap studio.

4) Their features obviously use modern cameras, lights, sets, wardrobes, locales... certainly not crap ingredients.

So, why the hullaballoo? Answer, because Vivid doesn't do the hardcore thing that so many of us love. OK, that's their perogative... just like it is your perogative to take your dollars elsewhere. But does that make them crap? I don't think so!

I've been suckered into buying cable versions of a few of Vivid's VHS. But of course I had no way of knowing I was getting a cable version 'til after I bought it. I did enjoy the cable versions, but this was at a time when these were my first porno purchases.

I only say "suckered" because there they were on a store shelf, it was after I turned 18, and I thought what the hell, buy one. Of course I'd been reading Hustler for a couple years proir, but had yet to purchase an adult film... so I jumped at a couple of their VHS.

While I can't say that they were "satisfying", they did quench a thirst to see porn, and to legally possess it. Well they served their purpose.

I can't really be a judge of Vivid's DVDs, I can go by what a lot of people say, which is usually nothing good, or spectacular.

I can say that I've been interested in buying a few Vivid DVDs, but seeing is how they seem to be a "mess", I haven't yet.

But ya gotta admit, some of those covers, if not all, are HOT!

I would agree with Ay. I would not buy nor see Vivid stuff alone as there are no double anals and few dps, but they produce videos for their niche and they are strong in the niche. For my taste, Vivid is boring but then I may be jaded having seen too much hard stuff and double everythings.

Now if I were to see a porno title with a babe, especially a babe who likes Vivid stuff, I would happily watch Vivid videos.

Personally, I think Vivid is good stuff, but i've become too jaded for their regular films. Who needs plot really, I just wait for the compilations. The only exception is their great Where the Boys Aren't series.

I didn't expect this large of a reponse. I remember watching the Playboy Channel in junior high and thinking how awesome vivid was despite it being only X and more couples orientated. When I wrote my topic, I was lost for words. I couldn't explain why I didn't like Vivid. I do enjoy the bad girls series where everything is in jail but other movies are just either too low quality, edited badly, or too couple orientated for my taste even though I'm not a big fan of hardcore sex. I wrote the topic right after getting bored and disappointed watching Deep Inside April which I thought it could of been better. I liked watching April from her scenes from vca, but in her deep inside collabration, it seemed that the people who were in charge of researching scenes for the dvd just found whatever scenes that were there and didn't take the time to see if it was one of her best ones in vivid. There were scenes in which she wasn't the main focus. I ordered the Deep Inside Chasey Lain dvd because its was $10.95 and there were a few scenes in it that I remember seeing on playboy.

All this endless Vivid bashing is so boring. It's like there's a special club of people that hate the colour green, and every time anyone mentions the word or uses the color they jump out of the woodwork to criticise it. On and on and on. And 'not-as-good for some odd reason' is way above average in terms of detail and general interest levels, which is pretty sad.

98% of the people reading this have heard every criticism possible about 'green' (ok, Vivid) a thousand times before. I dunno how you guys keep nourishing your rage but I'm very impressed that there is so little else wrong with your lives that complaining about a company that produces movies of gorgeous women having sex is so high on your list of things to do.

Every now and then things become clear.

Vivid can make some okay features, and like everybody, has hits and misses. I've seen many movies I liked from them, and I'm waiting for many I enjoyed when I started watching porn to make it to DVD. Like the others have said, when you're making as much money doing what you're doing, why change?

My biggst problem with Vivid right now is the authoring on their DVDs, which from the last couple I've seen, does bring the word "crap" to mind. I think the last two or three DVDs I watched of theirs kicked me back to the main menu in the middle of the feature (I think at the layer change), and you had to mess around with the chapter menu to try and get back into the feature. There were also a couple other problems that seemed just as juvenile.

I'm sorry, but Vivid is probably the studio that gets the majority of the mainstream attention (if not the top, then definitely in the top three). Like others have said, a good portion of people are introduced to porn through Vivid, and when they do a lousy job I think it brings people's opinion of the adult industry down even further. Heck, people still laugh at the adult industry's use of multiple angles because of the horrible job Vivid started with them despite most companies doing them right. Whether you like Vivid's movies or not, they're still one of the top companies out there. I just wish Vivid would realize it and start acting like it with their DVDs.

As a core Vivid productions buyer, I felt so insulted at first by the title of the thread that I did not care to answer. With 14 answers, I thought : "ok, maybe there's gonna be a silent minority of feature lovers that are finally gonna express themselves here". I was pleasantly surprised that Vivid didn't take the bashing I expected.
I wholefully agree that Vivid certainly don't push the envelopes they should be pushing as of lately. It's common knowledge among porn aficionados that there's no point in renting or buying, say, the latest Taylor Hayes or Kobe Tai if you expect gagging, anal d.p or record-breaking sexual performances. What I expect from Vivid is, in order : a viewer-friendly boxcover, extremely good-looking performers, an attempt at storytelling, professional lighting & above average post-production. Unfortunately, I will admit that not all of these points, which I think should be Vivid mandatory, haven't been respected in their productions lately.
1) How come with so much money on their hands and their positioning as couples'friendly, hence women-friendly, they're still unable to sign good-looking male performers?Except for Dale DaBone & Joey Ray, there's more male eye candy in Leisure Time productions.
2) What's the matter with the editing ? Some sex scenes are stopped dead right in the middle or downright absent from the DVD version, which you will then find in the behind-the-scenes featurette. Supposedly this is made to fit all the bonus. Excuse me, but if I wanted to see a comp, I'd buy one. I'm a Paul thomas fan because I know I'll get relevant dialogue, progressive storytelling & finished sex scenes. When I don't, not only I feel cheated, but I also feel the director has been cheated. I want my whole movie, and if it means not getting this useless photo gallery & this bonus TJ Hart segement, I think I can survive, thank u.
3) Multi-angles, indeed. I don't know if this option adds up to the running time, but this is something I could do without too. The angles not only are systematically asynchronous, but I remember at least one instance (in Robby D.'s "Unconscious"), where they so blundered on the angles that,in an orgy scene, Dasha could be seen having sex w.Vince Voyeur in Angle 1, and then u switched to Angle 2 and Voyeur magically transformed into Erik Everhard! Fantastically ridiculous ! Maybe they really are persuaded their audience is dumb, after all.
I keep on buying Vivid dvds because they still deliver in lighting, beautiful actresses & overall production values (costumes, sets, etc...). But if they want stay numero uno in the couples' market, they'd better address these issues soon, since I'm looking more & more into the VCA & Digital Sin dvd catalogue lately, and coming from such a die-hard Vivid fan, this definitely means something.

i should be so lucky, lucky lucky lucky

I have worked for Vivid on many occasions.. I've been to the office plenty of times.. and I've seen dozens of productions and videos etc... Not only that my husband is a constant performer for their movies.. I've read most of the things said here.. and I guess what I'm thinking is that.. it's trully hard to understand something when you're so far away from it.. meaning.. talent is involved all the time with the productions in many ways.. so we see what goes on.. and for the most part understand the reasoning behind some of the actions taken by a few of the studios... Vivid's biggest thing is.. their marketing.. that is what makes them... and the fact that they play to couples.. which is a really big market now.. having the cable versions and contracts with certain hotel chains etc.. they've got a great deal going for them .. as far as anything else.. well... if you only knew... it's a strange world.. and it never ceases to amaze me how things work out.. I think whoever does their marketing should win awards..

I may have to go check out some recent Vivid title just to see what constitutes one of their features these days. But I feel I've seen a million of 'em in some hotel room on a business trip. My feeling is that it's bland and sanitized glamor-porn, without much juice or juju. Tell you the truth, when I've watched porn with a gal pal, its usually something with Rocco ...

Yes, I can easily say that I hear about Vivid so much that I wager its profile ("Q factor," as they say in advertising) is equal to that of many mainstream media outfits. It is probably what most people who aren't porn afficianados think of when they think of porn. And a big reason for that is surely that the house style is not risking offending anyone (other those opposed to porn on principle). And the marketing. But they're selling the sizzle and not the steak, so to speak. And that's the oldest porn tradition going.

It's only poor products that need good marketing to generate their sales. Good products sell themselves.

That having been said, I agree, as a porn company, the majority of Vivid's great work is done by their marketing department.

I really like Vivid movies. I watch porn by myself, not with a girlfriend. I enjoy the hot girls, lavish sets, and high production values. I especially like the features directed by Paul Thomas. However, I've got a couple "Deep Inside" compilation DVDs that I'm not thrilled about.
What exactly does this mean? Are certain scenes deleted? Or shortened? I really didn't know about this.

Oh, and I'd like to wish the moderators and everyone else here a Happy Thanksgiving day. I just used the "comparison cart" and read a lot of reviews last night, and saved a bundle of cash! This site has been most helpful!

In the past (and maybe this is still the case), when Vivid modified the 'status' of their movies from "New Release" to "Catalog" they would replicate that movie on cheaper tape stock. Often, in order to fit a movie onto these tapes, they would edit or even delete a scene or two.

For whatever reason, when DVD was introduced, Vivid released many of their older titles using the "catalog" version of the movie rather than the original version (many people assume that it was so Vivid could fit all of the extra stuff on their discs (probably a marketing decision rather than a creative one).

The other thing that they did with virtually all movies that were shot before anyone ever considered DVD and multi-angles, is to edit scenes from the VHS version so they gave the illusion of multi-angle. What they were really doing was taking a sex postion that may have lasted 3 minutes on VHS and cutting it to a one minute scene that had 3 different angles. They weren't 3 synchronized shots, just 3 shots of the same scene.

Now that DVD is in their mind at the time of shooting a movie, this no longer happens.

Basically, if you are thinking about buying an older Vivid title, do some research. The title may be an edited version. If you are buying a new Vivid title, I wouldn't be concerned.

I also don't know why so many people are bashing Vivid. I was first introduced to porn through Vivid and have since watched a lot of their movies. I've enjoyed most of them. In case anyone is curious, I'm a single guy.

Vivids marketing is good, their movies arent. I cant remember one title in 2007 that interested me only a little bit. They should stop production and should only re-release their old titles and the annual calendar. I think WICKED has superseded Vivid in sales of new movies, or not ?

It's gotta make you wonder why Vivid consistently wins a lot of awards every year at AVN, when they really don't have a ton of supporters from the fans it seems. I know there is the issue about advertising in AVN and the fact that Vivid sells a lot of stuff to cable.

Friends -
Hello.
My name is BSD and yesterday, after over 30 years of being deeply immersed in porn, yesterday I rented my first ever Vivid dvd. Or Vivid product of any kind.
(Oh the lengths I'll go for Abbey Brooks.)
Anyway, after 24 hours of having this Vivid dvd, I'm about half-way through the opening Vivid.com, Vivid sex toys, Vivid phone sex, Vivd movies, Vivid clothing, Vivid lunchboxes, Vivid lifestyle, 2257 crap before the real product starts.
I think I'll get to see my Abbey finally meet a dick, sometime Wednesday morning if my calculations are correct.
BSD
P.S. - Tomorrow I'm going back to the smut hut that I rented it from and insist that I not be assessed any late fees seeing as to how I've been running the dvd for almost two days and the movie still hasn't started yet.
P.S.S. - No, you can't fast forward through, or skip over, the bullshit.

I've never been a fan of Vivid, I just don't like their style, but I used to sit through some Vivid movies in the past for one reason only :
I was a Christy Canyon fan.
Since then, I've stayed far away, and I don't have any desire to go back.

Vivid produces marshmallow fluff. But there's a big market for marshmallow fluff. While I'm not interested in what they make, there are plenty of people out there that want it. It's no different than GM making several different car lines. Not everybody wants the same thing. If all you want is gonzo hardcore, then you're not going to want to watch Vivid. On the other side if you want something soft and fluffy, your first choice is hardly going to be Max. From a business point they don't make crap. They're technically well done, and well marketed. But if you're looking for hardcore, Vivid will never be what you want.

Personally, I would put Vivid below some of the other studios that produce features and softcore. Vivid features have all the trappings that you look for in a good feature but there's something really hollow, sterile and cold about most of their stuff. I love a good feature as much as I love a good HC gonzo flick. I just got disgusted with being continually disappointed with Vivid features years ago and haven't watched them since.

One issue that I have with vivid is, the amount of time between when a movie is shot and when its released. I.e. Briana Banks movie, shot in conjunction with Red light "Perfect Match", there was a press release on avn.com about the shooting of the movie, two years ago, and it hasn't come out yet (there are even hollywood movies that don't take that long from shooting to release.. iirc)
Another thing that could be improved is its website, specifically, I'd like if they could have a clearer listing of who their contract girls are at any given point in time.
A third thing is that it would be nice to at least have a rep from the company to talk to here, to receive feed back but also to give us notice of future projects (maybe that's asking too much, but I've liked interacting with Jules, and tricia here for example, and they have certainly influenced my purchasing decisions)

It's funny how all the Vivid haters who think the movies suck and would never watch them, seem to know the quality of every title released. If you hate the company and do not watch the titles how can you comment on them? Vivid has changed in the last three years and is offering a wide variety of titles. They still produce the couples type movies, but they also have new directors and harder movies, some of the stuff is the best I have seen(I work for an adult mag and watch a lot). One of their directors gets consistently excellent reviews from reviewers who would have never liked "Vivid Porn", guys like Roger Pipe, Den from CAVR, Xcritics, ect..... My point is, you should at least have some knowledge about what your discussing instead of just posting something you have no idea about.

Since Vivid is shooting them again I wish they would add 1 or 2 ir (BM/ non-BF) scenes to their feature movies that are not part of the Blackmaled series of DVDs, meaning like how they used to incorporate such scenes in their mid-nineties features. These ir scenes could play major roles in the storylines of their features, through such means as making the male lead characters men of color. They could also play minor ones through such means as having a White female friend of the lead female character go to a bar and end up hooking up with a guy who so happens to be Black.

I think most people haven't watched the newer stuff because they got fed up with the older stuff. It's much harder to get people to come back once they've been burned.
So if Vivid is producing such great stuff now, how 'bout droppin' a couple directors' names and titles? Thanks.

MMM. Yum. I love Vivid. I loved Chi Chi LaRue.
Please, excuse me if there's another thread on this. I mean, this is like 2 years old, but this is what I gathered from Wiki:
In 2006, LaRue announced he would no longer produce films for Vivid Video because they were featuring actors and actresses having sex without condoms.[2]
Is he still shooting at all or just performing in West Hollywood and other ventures?
I love anything by Paul "PT" Thomas. I loved New Devil in Miss Jones, Last Girl Standing, Debbie Does Dallas..Again. Those, of course, are the new mainstream productiosn he's done for Vivid. When I mean mainstream, most of those films were featured on a reality-like show on the Playboy Channel Vivid Valley and on a Showtime Special.
I love Vivid, Wicked, Digital Playground, and the other production companies. It brings back the old days of Hollywood when Stars were contracted and so on.
With that..do most girls set out for a contract or do they like the money and freedom without a contract? Is it easy to be a porn actress and be featured in a big production by one of these mentioned studios?

Here are some ideas I think will help improve the movies Vivid Video releases.
1) Vivid needs to hire directors who are great at directing movies that have both engaging storylines and stroke worthy scenes, for example directors like Eli Cross and John Stagliano.
2) If Vivid plans to continue doing movies with ir scenes and scenes with gonzo type fair (i.e. anal, dp, & etc) in them please keep Paul Thomas away from their scripts and from behind the camera. No offense but through the convoluted scripts he has written over the years and the cold and boring documentary manner in which he shoots and edits his productions I think he has repeatedly ruin any heat those scenes could have had.
3) If Vivid plans to continue doing movies with ir scenes and scenes with gonzo type fair (i.e. anal, dp, & etc) in them I think they should go about doing them in a manner that would seem revolutionary by today’s standards and not the standards of the mid 90s. For example if they are going to continue doing the Blackmaled series each new edition should contain more than just one ir (BM/non-BF) scene it, and at least one of those scenes should play a main role in their edition’s storyline.
4) Since it is such a successful selling point Vivid needs to begin taken the approach that Jim Holiday use to take with anal sex in the semi-hardcore cable versions of his movies. Do to the fact that most adult channels do not allow anal penetration to be clearly shown on screen he use to shoot and edit this act in a soft-core manner and also have the female performers on the receiving end of this act vocalize that they’re being banged in their butts. In most cases he used to show anal sex occurring in the cable versions of his movies’ scenes for a good amount of minutes. He used to also shoot and edit this act occurring in a number of ways, such as carefully filmed wide shots, two shots, and reaction shots.
5) (This idea is based on posts I’ve read and the cable versions of their movies I have seen) Vivid needs to be less strict with the editing of their movies. From posts I read and things I seen it appears that Vivid regularly destroys the heat and the stroke worthiness of their movie’s scenes with their very strict editing. An example of this in my own opinion can be seen when you watch both the Vivid Valley segment where they show the behind the scenes of lesbian strap-on orgy scene from “Last Girl Standing” and the cable version of the same scene. In the Vivid Valley footage there was a lot of heat and stroke worthy and intense action occurring, but in the cable version all I saw was very boringly captured and very vanilla / robotic sex action occurring.

This is all that interests me from Vivid:
1.) Sunny Leone and her movies - less the g/g (though some of that is good). Sunny Loves Matt was awesome and much harder than I expected. Sunny is incredibly gorgeous and has my attention.
2.) Their gonzo offshoots - Brand New Faces is nice. I like the new girls in their first scenes. I also like some of the Cezar Capone directed Filthy Films stuff - Filthy First Timers & Filthy Senoritas.
Anything other than that, I couldn't give two shits about.

They have a big butt series (the name escapes me right now) that is pretty damn good too actually.

What makes me mad is that when they do have a star who could make some hot movies you might not see her for a whole year or more. I love briana banks and her movie "Perfect Match" was really good. Not from Vivid of course. And now nothing for months and months. They let their stars be forgotten. I understand not wanting to turn out one a week, but one a year doesn't work either. New girls come along too quickly and people go on to their next favorite. Briana enjoys being nasty. Let her do her thing and sell some product!!!!

A few comments.
Many fans who dislike Vivid NEVER will like them. Vivid does not make aggressive or extreme porn. Other companies already do that better than Vivid could. And the harder-core porn reduces the ability of Vivid to sell to ALL markets (cable, hotels etc.), which effects their profits.
Still, there is a very large audience who will pay for their product. Remember, it's generally acknowledged (in AVN, XBIZ, mainstream press) that Vivid makes more money than ANY other porn company. So there are a lot of non-extreme, non-gonzo, non-aggressive porn fans out there--who don't post on Message Boards, like this.
To answer the question: Vivid is about profits, and the sexvids they produce gets them the most revenue. It's a business.
