I just think this is a cool little bit of info. Arabian Nights was written during the Islamic Golden Age (750 ce - 1250 ce roughly)It was translated in 1704 as Arabian Nights' Entertainment. The most recognized stories from the collection include Sinbad the sailor, Aladin and Ali Baba and his forty theives. However, some of the tales also consisted of some erotica and would have been considered scandalous for 18th century readers. But it wasnt "porn." Now, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure(aka The Life and Adventures of Fanny Hill or just plain Fanny Hill) on the other hand, written not long after Arabian Nights was translated, was indeed porn and was actually banned for a very long time in many countries. Of course bootleg copies could be obtained and now you can actaully read it on line. If I were going to make a classic tale into a porn movie It would be that one. Fanny was published in installments and the publishers and authors were arrested and charged with "corrupting The King's subjects." So you know it was some good shit. I've never read Arabian Nights, but I understood it had "erotic" content. I guess it depends what you call "porn" -- the word "pornography" wasn't in the dictionary until the mid-19th century, so technically nothing before that was porn. But, having just taught Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, I can say that indeed most folks would probably recognize it as "porn" along with Sade etc (my students certainly were shocked to discover what was around at that time! The gist of the the story is that there was a king Shahryar, who had wives that cheated on him so he hadd them killed. After that, whenever hee took a new wife, he would keep her long enough to sleep with her and then have her killed. Scheherazade volunteers to take the place of her sister as the kings wife, knowing that once he made love her he would kill her. On their first night together, she begins to tell him a story. And Shahryar decides he would rather hear the rest of thhe story the following night rather than have her killed in the morning. There are stories within stories. Poems, songs.... There are several different translations. I can send you a link for an online version that you could sample. I'm always surprised at how 21st century people think 18th century people were so prudish. They dont realize in the 18th century 1/3 rd of women went to the alter pregnant. It wasnt uncommon once a betrothal contract was made for the groom to start sharing a bed with his future wife. The difference in my opinion comes from the fact that women had nothing to say in the matter and that people used more discretion. But they had "porn", they had very naughty songs that they sang (Google Bonnie Black Hare sometime), they had clubs of debauchery, but alot of it was all underground. I've always been a big fan of The French and Indian War and the American Revolution so it all ties together for me when I write fan fiction or any of my originals. They're always about that era. Yes, it's amazing how much of today's attitude/understanding regarding sex and sexual representation only goes back a few decades. "Debauchery" is the word -- bawdy folks they were indeed! The 19th century especially, in terms of an explosion of underground pornography. Fascinating stuff. You should totally plug your writing by the way... And finally, I should have said this up front, but 1001 Erotic Nights the movie is a favourite of mine. I rewatched it just the other day. John Leslie is in my top 3 favourite performers of all time. I borrowed a vhs tape from a friend and watched it with a couple of other friends one afternoon in my basement. It is titled "Too Much Too Soon." The premise is simple. A very uptight high school student loses her virginity to her boyfriend her senior year. (Presumably after she turned 18) After that she goes crazy and becomes a total nympho. There is so much exposition in this film. Nothing sexual happens for the first 20 - 25 minutes. (Not even a boob) I remember saying "Too Much Too Soon"? My older brother and I took a trip to a newly opened store and I couldn't believe all the XXX titles on the shelf. I didn't say a word. My brother picked out a movie called Baby Doll that was shot in 1975 and had Candy Mason in it. At age 17 is when I went wild with XXX films. I rented them and recorded titles after getting a second VCR. I also would go with my friend to the XXX theaters in the Bronx. We were underage but were never questioned, they just took our money. The theaters were almost always empty and the floors for some reason were always very sticky. You could feel your sneakers gripping the floor each time you took a step. I remember telling my friend people must have spilled their Pepsi on the floor. The films in the theaters were always great and had a lot of violence in them too. One i know was called 'Back Door lust' and i am pretty sure one was called 'Silk, Satin & Lace' but i have not been able to find it. I kinda would not mind getting them for Nostalgia. I know Back Door lust is available on DVD. I cant remember much about the movies. Just remember we cooked up a bunch of food sat down and watched the vids.
