Huh, interesting.
By the way, the XBIZ Awards awarded Dani Daniels with their FPOTY award this weekend; there's a head-scratcher, to say the least.

^ XBIZ got it so wrong this year in my opinion - Performer Of The Year, Best New Starlet, Best Male Performer (that one was laughable), and Best Showcase. None of the winners were even close to the ones who should have. I pray AVN does not fuck things up so woefully this month. Excuse my bitterness, it just pisses me off when blatant winners who the general consensus of critics, fans, even fellow performers, tout as dead certainties are overlooked for those who have simply not been on the same level, worked as hard, or acheived as much in one year. Credit to those who should have won and were expected to win but did not, they have been magnanimous in defeat. I am just venting my perplexion. Rant end.

Why is that a head-scratcher? Am I missing something? Dani is one of the best performers still active in porn these days.

Because, generally speaking, there's very little respect for vanilla porn around these parts, and Dani basically only shoots vanilla porn. She does it about as well as anyone in the industry, but without that "edge" to her this isn't going to be the place where she's going to have a ton of fan support.

^ Not to mention POTY winners typically do something noteworthy the year they win, like have a major showcase released. Dani had a big showcase from Blacked in 2014, but for 2015 it was just a normal year for her. She also didn't work much with any of the big companies.
Lump me in with the folks scratching their heads on this one.

Carter Cruise, you're so HOT! You're definitely a most-deserving vandidate. I hope you win. Great post with a lot of interesting insight. Have a great time, and best wishes for the award show. Go Carter Go!

There are lots of lovers of 'vanilla' b/g on here, they just aren't as vocal and repetitive in their posts as the raincoater contingent.
Ultimately I think Dani winning shows that the industry appreciates someone who can move units, something I'm sure she helps happen.

I think she's been working steady for EroticaX. I think her generally classiness and clear pleasure in her scenes probably makes her appealing to female viewers and a good rep for the industry in general, all good reason for the business side of the industry to recognize her.

I think the main reason some people are surprised by Dani's victory is that by most accounts, she had a must stronger year last year. That doesn't mean she wasn't great this year and deserving of the title, but it would be tough to say that 2015 Dani beat out 2014 Dani for overall work. Then again, she wasn't competing with last year's resume.
Congrats to DD and we shall see if her momentum carries over to AVN and then to XRCO.

"I think the main reason some people are surprised by Dani's victory is that by most accounts, she had a must stronger year last year."
Yes, that's certainly the case for me. I mean, if she had something noteworthy for the nomination year, like her BLACKED showcase, I'd at least understand her winning the award. However, I can't recall her putting out anything that could be described as that for the 2015 nomination year; I don't know, was she big in the "features side" last year? To quote Mister Fahrenheit:
The more I think about it, the more this looks like a "make-up" choice by the voters: "Gee, she's done great stuff in years past and sets a great example for the industry, how 'bout we give her this one? Even though 2015 wasn't her best year, so to say, she's done so much over the span of her career that maybe we ought to reward her for it, right?" If that was indeed the thinking behind the voting, then I don't agree with it AT ALL. You're taking an annual award, which is supposed to only take into consideration what performers have done in that nomination year, and using it as a "career achievement" award instead.
Anyways, can someone help us out here and provide us with examples of exceptional scenes/movies Dani Daniels did between October 2014 and September 2015 (the nomination year)?

AVN has done the same thing. Asa Akira winning FPOTY in 2013 even though she won more individual awards than anyone ever had (or has since) in 2012. Hell, I might even argue that Bobbi Starr winning in 2012 was because she should have gotten the one they gave to Tori in 2011, and Asa was just a continuation of that.
The truth is that while there are a few favorites this year, there's no one that's head and shoulders above everyone else (no matter how much people might say otherwise), and occasionally that leads to some interesting choices when people have to come to a consensus.

Here's a piece on the judging process on the Awards Show taken from MIC.

Here’s What It’s Like to Be a Voter in the Porn Oscars – New Piece on Mic

Here’s what it’s like to be a voter in the “Porn Oscars” — The AVN Awards

“I don’t know that I have a least favorite part [about being a voter],” Jennifer Peters told Mic. “I think that the hardest part though is always watching friends’ scenes.”
You might be wondering why Peters would find it difficult to watch her friends on screen. It’s because, though her friends are performing in various types of scenes and films, she’s not a judge in the Golden Globes. She’s a judge for the AVN awards.
Sponsored and presented annually by the trade publication Adult Video News (link NSFW), the AVN Awards are often referred to as the “Oscars of Porn.” Just like its informal Hollywood counterpart, the ceremony recognizes achievement in various aspects of adult content production. There are awards for Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Editing, as well as best cinematography and makeup and music and so much more. But unlike the Oscars, the AVNs also recognize porno-specific achievements – things like best anal sex scene, best BDSM movie, and best girl/girl sex scene, among many others.
While winning an award for something like best group sex scene may seem like a liability to those outside the adult entertainment industry, to insiders, the AVN awards are extremely significant. Anikka Albrite, AVN’s 2015 female performer of the year, who has been nominated for 13 awards in 2016, said an AVN award catapults winners to a new level in their careers.
“When I won the female performer of the year award, it felt like people, especially newer [performers] and fans, saw me as a role model,” Albrite said. “It made me a respected representative for the adult industry.”

When the AVN awards began in 1984, there were only 17 categories honored. For 2016, there are 114. In years past, there have been as many as 140, says Peter Warren, 40, head of the AVN awards voting process.
According to Warren, who provided AVN’s voting figures to Mic, 23 voters were involved in the 2016 voting process, five of which are in-house members of AVN’s editorial staff. (Like the awards categories themselves, the number of voters fluctuates, though not nearly as dramatically or frequently.) This means that, starting in early December, 23 people received hundreds of DVDs via snail mail and were granted access to every type of porno website you can imagine – all so they could view the nominated content and cast their votes.
While the adult entertainment world holds its breath in anticipation of the January 23rd awards show, Mic spoke with several voters for the AVN awards, discussing everything from weeks of non-stop porn viewing to rumors that the awards are fixed. We wanted to know: What exactly is it like to be a judge in the porn Oscars?
The Veteran
Don Houston is a regular volunteer for US Veterans who rescues dogs in his spare time. He’s in his 50s and has a master’s degree. He has also been an AVN awards voter for eight years.
Houston works as a managing editor and the lead reviewer for XCritic (link NSFW), an adult content review site. He describes himself as an avid porn enthusiast who’s reviewed in excess of 10,000 movies since the early 1980s.
“I watch a great deal of porn throughout the year, much of what eventually gets nominated, which cuts down on the end-of-year rush,” he explains. “If I didn’t, it would be physically impossible to vote in many categories – there are only so many hours in a day.”
Although the amount of content each voter must consider is pretty overwhelming, the basic voting process itself is quite simple. Voters rank their choices in each category, from best to worst. In a category with fifteen nominees, for example, a voter’s top choice gets fifteen points, their second choice gets fourteen points, and so on. The nominee with the most points after all the voters’ choices have been aggregated is the winner.
Voters have plenty of agency to put their own spin on the process, organizing their viewing and rankings around specific indicators in each category. A general performance award such as best new starlet (think “hot ingénue that’s relatively new to the porn industry”) considers a performer’s body of work, from different types of scenes and their quality to the total number of sex scenes overall. A feature category — something like best drama, an award Wicked Pictures’ Wanted (link NSFW) is nominated for this year — considers how well the sex is integrated into the overarching narrative, production value, and casting.

The Editrix
Jennifer Peters is a freelance reporter covering military and defense for Vice. She’s also been working in the adult industry as a writer and editor for adult content and trade publications since 2006. Peters became an AVN awards voter for the 2012 program, and she’s currently one of eight women on the roster for 2016.
Peters has a day job, which means all of her voter-sanctioned viewing has to happen at night and on the weekends. “I’m often watching [porn] while folding laundry or baking cookies or whatever other things I have to do after work,” she said, laughing. “A lot of times, I watch with the TV on mute. There’s only so much moaning and grunting I can take at once.”
Every awards-granting organization faces criticism, including accusations of fixing and bias. The AVN Awards are no different. Though Peters acknowledges others may have acted dishonestly in the past, she cites her time in the industry as one of the main reasons why nominees couldn’t sway her during the voting process, even if they wanted to.
“One of the ‘perks’ of being in the industry for so long is that autographed DVDs or new swag don’t really have any impact on me,” she told Mic. “Chances are I’ve interviewed whoever it is whose autograph is being given to me, and I don’t need more crap filling up my apartment, so short of buying me a pony, there’s nothing a nominee could really do to curry favor with me.”

The Anonymous Voter
Because of the general public’s stigmatization of porn, some voters prefer to remain anonymous. Mic spoke to one such voter – a college educated person in their mid-40s named Kelly.
Kelly’s full-time “day job” is actually at night, leaving daytime hours free for reviewing porn, which they do several times per week. Kelly told Mic that the review process has tapered in recent years, however, as fewer studios send out even less content. This pattern is tied to the complex issue of adult content piracy and producers’ subsequent belt-tightening. Kelly also mentioned that this year’s voting process yielded the least number of nominee screeners in their five-year tenure as a voter.
According to Kelly, it’s easier to vote in some categories and more challenging to vote in others, largely due to their personal content preferences. Kelly, for instance, votes primarily in the all-sex (meaning, non-narrative) and gonzo award categories because they have more experience reviewing such content.
“The [all-sex categories] are much easier for me since that’s where the majority of my reviews lay,” Kelly said. “I’m more hit-and-miss on features. That’s an area I strive to improve on each year but seem to fall a little short on watching, so I try and watch as much of those when they arrive so I can offer up a solid vote in those categories.”
Given the amount of time and energy Kelly puts into the AVN awards, it stands to reason that they derive some deeper satisfaction out of being a voter.
“I’m a fan of what these performers do,” they told Mic. “To visually fulfill so many fantasies that so many of us have sexually is a big deal for me. I appreciate what what they go through to provide us this stimulating material to enjoy.”

The Porn Professional
“The awards are ‘fixed’? I’ve been here long enough that now I just laugh when I hear that accusation. If that were the case, why would so many of us give up so much of our lives for so long?” Sherri L. Shaulis asked, rhetorically.
Shaulis, 46, is the Senior Editor of Pleasure Products for AVN. She started working for the magazine a little more than eight years ago and has been a voter, as well as a member of the nominating committee, for six or seven. “I lose track,” she said, laughing. “I was not automatically granted voting privileges. I had to prove my worth by working my way up the ladder.”
During the nominations process, Shaulis spend hours each day sitting in a conference room with other committee members going over every single submitted pre-nomination for every single category. The whole thing takes approximately seven weeks and includes watching hundreds of hours of sex scenes and acting scenes. This is in addition to reviewing and critiquing everything from hair and makeup to sets and costumes and cinematography and scripts.
“This year alone, we had one category that had several hundred pre-nominations submitted and, as a committee, we had to examine those entries and narrow down the list to the fifteen nominees,” Shaulis explains.
It’s a process few truly understand and many criticize. In an infamous piece about the AVN awards, writer David Foster Wallace quoted gonzo porn auteur Max Hardcore accusing the AVN awards of being fixed, with Hardcore saying that the awards were “a total conflict of interests” due to frequent winners placing ads in the magazine.
In order to combat rumors about “fixing” and give fans and industry insiders a peek behind the scenes, Shaulis took to Twitter to live-tweet the AVN nomination meetings. Though she doesn’t mention names or titles in her tweets, she shares some of the funnier comments that are said during the meetings.
“Quite a few people in the industry tell me it’s their favorite part of awards season,” she said. “They love trying to figure out who or what we’re talking about.”
Shaulis emphasizes the significance of the awards, something she doesn’t feel people outside the industry necessarily understand. “Some people might say, ‘It’s just porn’ and have this preconceived notion that it’s just a few naked people and a camera. But I look at it as a film genre that so many people love.”

While you sure can disagree with the winners, I think you are being harsh to include Abella Danger's new starlet award in your list of outrages. She had a very good case to be made to win, even if it isn't your choice. She isn't a complete baffling choice like the POTY :)

Well, I am speechless with disappointment. Multiple counts of daylight robbery at the awards last night. What a farce these awards are. Just like XBIZ, none of the performers who should have won did win. There's no question who POTY and BNS should have gone to. All due respect of course to those who did win but I'm sorry AVN got it so wrong, again. When will they recognise those who put in the work more than everybody else, those who are - almost beyond any debate - outright deserved winners. Truly scandalous. More than anything else I feel for those who should have won by a country mile and were outright ignored by their "fellow professionals", I can only imagine what they might be feeling. Yes it is subjective based on one's personal opinion but up to a point. When you consider the body of work by those who did win compared to those who should have won - especially POTY - there can be no debate, opinion is irrelevant. The facts speak for themselves. Then you look at the versatility within that body of work, again no debate in my opinion. I said months ago that anybody other than the obvious candidates for POTY or BNS I would call a farce and after today I stand by that judgment. I hate sounding bitter, but I can't help it when the performers who were runaway candidates, practically garunteed by the general consensus of the viewing public, are overlooked for others who have had a handful of memorable scenes or movies by comparison. Strong words on my behalf I admit, and perhaps a part of this is just venting, but more than anything else it is in response to another year of grave injustices comiitted by AVN. Disappointed beyond beleif.

I'm not going to get too much into the Riley vs. Adriana debate except to say that both would have been worthy winners of FPOTY, and there are valid reasons to prefer each one over the other.
But as far as Abella vs.Megan, I don't know how you could say with a straight face that Megan clearly worked harder than Abella, seeing as I'd be willing to bet that not only did Abella shoot more scenes overall in the nomination year (Oct. 2014-Sep. 2015) than Megan did, but she did so for more companies as well. Preferring one to the other is fine, but saying that anyone else winning is a farce or anything like that is a little over the top.

^ Hence the phrase "In my opinion". Like I also said, all due respect to the actual winner but Abella has not been on Megan's level this year and if you were to look at the general concensus as the year has gone on a majority of others would say the same. But hey ho, it wasn't just this award. Look at Best Anal and Best DP too, that just so happens to also be from the same movie as the POTY showcase for Tushy....

Meh, I would've gone with Carter Cruise or Adriana Chechik, but I've got no beef with Riley Reid winning (she was third on my "most-deserving" list). I figured that one of the Greg Lansky showcase girls (Carter or Riley) would win it.

I love Riley, but giving her FPOTY in my opinion was totally unfair. Adriana had a wonderfull and very intense year. I think she totally deserved it. Whats worst, she only got ONE award (Best TS scene). Nothing even from her work with girlsway, or her many other amazing performances this year. Few have the passion this unique girl have. Totally dissapointed

Wow, I didn't even realize that until you mentioned it-despite ALL of the work she did over the course of this nomination year, she only won one award.
(For a TS scene, no less.)
Admittedly, Adriana's not exactly my favorite performer (I'd probably put her somewhere between 6-10 on my "favorites list"), but damn, it's ridiculous that she didn't receive a single (B/G) gonzo award.

Prince to AVN and AExpo
Damn that's ridiculous. How could they only have 23 people voting? It's a multi-billion dollar industry reaching hundreds of millions of people.
But I guess at the end of the day AVN is just their own private club. It's just a media outlet that took off.
IMO this only opens the gate for a better committee, a better award show. How about ADT launch a live award show? That would be awesome. Anyway, it must take a huge amount of networking, gladhanding and endorsements and whatnot.

Yeah, this is going to be a disaster show on Twitter for awhile. I don't want to end up losing favorites when performers inevitably start showing their asses (and not in the good way), so I think I'll duck out of it for awhile.

I posted on this board a few months ago how it was already set in stone that Riley was going to win. AVN is pure politics and how one agency happens to win POY every year is main proof. Nothing against Riley, but Adriana performed at a higher level than her(and I'm not an Adriana fan). Once the "best anal scene" winner was announced people started to see what was going on. I don't watch porn stars based on winners, but it would be nice to reward stars for their work.

I think Adriana deserved to win the most, but the folks who are livid over her loss need to get some perspective. It's always nice to be recognized in some official capacity, but at the end of the day who really cares about any awards. I know who the best performer this year was, just like I know that Pulp Fiction is a better movie than Forest Gump. Award shows can be fun, but using them as measure of quality in any medium is kind of silly. Getting upset over award show slights is sillier still.

To win both? Isn't that highly statistically improbable? I didn't even know Flash won but that sort of contradicts the narrative of bias. I think this grievance is overreach, and I am as big a fan of black performers as any other person out there.
I know Lex has touted multiple AVN wins, hasn't he? Even back to back ones. To malign and smear AVN I don't think is being objective at all. But Prince does have a reputation of being a prima donna. Maybe that's part of why so many people hate him. I don't hate him. I rep him on twitter more than any other male performer just because he's responsive and enthusiastic and I fucks with his movies, especially the ones coming out of JJV.
The truth we have to recognize however is that very few performers are as polarizing as he, or we could say very few have ever been so despised as Prince. I've seen him catch flack more than any other male besides Manuel, and a lot of that flack comes from black viewers. When they aren't clowning the hell out of him for his boots, they are hating on him for his volume and attitude. None of that ever phased me. I think they're just looking for stuff to bitch about.
But it is what it is. Prince should not be throwing such a tantrum and trying to accuse AVN of bias, when the truth is a lot of people out there of various ethnicity do not like him. Even fans of Prince like myself should recognize this.

Thanks for the info. Still 40 is so few. Even the Academy that does the Oscars has more than 100 times as many voters. So whether its 40 or 23, that's just ridiculously selective and hardly a good representative sample of various perspectives for an industry so big.

That's interesting, I know a lot of people like to bag on him for the boots and some of his in-scene stuff (the F150 and whatever that other thing is called) but I was always under the impression that he was in pretty good standing among his peers in the industry. I'm always seeing female performers gush about him being "such a gentleman" and such. If he was that disliked it seems odd to me that so many porn women would request him for their first IR scenes. Although, from looking through his tweets it sounds like he's more upset with the way that the industry only seems to award the same group of male performers each year. Which I'm actually inclined to agree with. Also, something about Moe Johnson being booted off the red carpet for no apparent reason (but I don't know what that's about).

I've been out of the industry for a few years, but still pay close attention and IMO, Adriana Chechik for the second year in a row got robbed. For my money, she's clearly the nastiest, most fearless, most impactful female performer in the industry today. She's also a fan fave on porn social media sites I'm on all the time. Don't quite fathom why she keeps cuming up short with AVN voters.

I was AVN Editor in Chief from 1999-2006 and it's always been roughly that number of voters.
I agree 100 percent with those here who say Adriana should have won.
She CLEARLY should have won (last year too). No disrespect to Riley, but Adriana is clearly the nastiest, most impactful, most fearless female performer in the industry today.
I dunno, when I was integrally involved in the awards during my years at the magazine, we didn't always get it right, but we never, I don't believe, got it this wrong.

I only mean disliked among so many viewers. He's basically the black Manuel. Very popular in the industry, very prolific and reliable. He's ubiquitous. I am not among his critics, I'm just saying there are many out there, just like Manuel has haters.

Riley mentioned Adriana in her acceptance speech and said she deserved it as much as she did.

^^Both "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Forrest Gump" are far more cinematic than "Pulp Fiction." I LOVE "Pulp Fiction", but compared to the other two films it's just a stone's throw from being a play. "Pulp Fiction" received the award it most merited: Best Original Screenplay.
