| Den Member 911 Posts 9/02 | I have been having email and phone discussion with B. Skow about Vivid's boxcovers. Please read my review of Brand New Faces #22 I have complaining for 8 months that Vivid Boxcover includes extras that are not on the disc. I think it is wrong and should be stopped. It is bad for B. Skow and Vivid and for the entire adult industry! Don Houston did a fine job taking my complaint to the very top of Vivid management and reportedly getting their attention (which I could not manage to do). Now today I am reading reviews on iafd.com and I find this quote in Don Houston's review of Bounce 2: Again, there was no positions menu for the one guy that reportedly cares. ;) Yes Don, I do care! I care when one of our leading Studios lies on a boxcover repeatedly! I wish you cared. And, Don, for some reason I don't think I am the only person who cares! Den [Link] |

| Den Member 911 Posts 9/02 | Hi Den! Just because I fussed at the folks over at Vivid doesn't mean I feel obligated to exaggerate the specific importance of an extra to the world. Just as a photogallery/slide show adds nothing for me, trailers add almost nothing, and a short BTS with no meat in it adds very little, a positions menu is worthless for me. You were right to point it out to me and I was right to point it out to Vivid but you're the only person that has ever complained about it to me. I've had hundreds of people complain about condoms, dozens of people complain about directors that talked continuously during the scenes, and even a handful of people that complained about female performers that had not worked with blacks. How many people have complained about a lack of positions menu? One. How many people have written me or otherwise communicated about things like choking? One. How many people have given the same amount of points for a BTS lasting a couple minutes long as one lasting over an hour? One. If I sound harsh, consider that there are indeed degrees of worthiness when it comes to raising any issue. I lowered the score of the movie advertising "five stories" when there were four and mentioned the positions menu issue there in passing. If there is a groundswell of people upset over the matter, I will adjust future reviews but so far, there's just you. Liking you doesn't mean I should tear down a rating to "Skip It" over something so minute (I consider the full range of scores in my reviews, not just an artificial range from 7.0 to 9.0 or whatever you do now). Best Wishes, Don |

There are older Elegant Angel and VCA titles that promised BTS and there was none. I wouldn't dream that Elegant would ever do something like that these days and now trust them 100%. In my buying experience, Vivid more often than not has little fibs or cast mistakes on their boxcovers. When I have bought from them, it's been for the director (Stanley and Kane) so it doesn't harm my purchase too much. |

Some dvd's I bought in Europe are $50, that's a lot of money. For me it's the same as buying a first class ticket and then hearing at the desk that you have to fly coach and that there's no possibility to take a later flight. |

There are studios I know that put out quality, and studios which put out crap. I also rent. If don't like something, I'm not out much. |

| fu_q All-Star Member Marv Montag (@PornOfYore) 2506 Posts 2/09 | This is particularly true if--as stated by another poster--the pics on the back lie by implying that there is anal or boy-girl or whatever, and it isn't there. If they lied about the inclusion of a BTS segment, I would care, as well. One DVD that I recently reviewed was a massive liar in terms of its promotion / box cover -- I gave it one star b/c it was not what it was pretending to be and was something of a sham. That said, if it's a small lie, I wouldn't condone it...but I wouldn't necessarily condemn it, either. If it's something like a photo gallery or a positions room that is omitted, I wouldn't be bothered too much by it...other than on purely principle-based terms. |
| just_me Member 133 Posts 4/09 | A: Only if it were something I was greatly interested in. Actually, recently got a dvd where the front cover image is from a scene not even on the dvd! The girls were still both in the dvd, just in a different scene than that particular screenshot. Oh well, on the big list of all the things in the world that need fixing, this one is pretty far down on the list Edited by - just_me on 12/13/2009 3:34:15 AM |
| Jeff Mullen Member Hall of Famer -Time to get out 219 Posts 1/08 | Now in SOME companies defense, I can see when there are very minor errors on the box and how this happens. Artwork is turned in long before the movie has been completed in editing and often times they will turn in the running time of the movie to the box artist and then they will trim 20 minutes off the movie. Bam you have an error. At X-Play we get the TRT and other details right all the time but as I said, I can see when companies commit small errors by mistake. We have a new movie coming out called X-Play's Greatest Parody Hits and I packed this fucker with so much stuff that when I watched the final burned check disc, my DVD authorer had to reduce the quality of the bit rate to make it fit onto the disc. He didn't tell me. Much to my horror, some of the sections of the BTS and movie looked a tad bit less clean and I immediately halted the production. I had to reduce a number of minutes off of the extras and delete the slide show (does anybody watch these?) and eliminate 10 movie trailers in order to be able to make it all fit at the higher quality rate. Luckily for me I didn't have the artist state on the box sleeve 6 BTS Sections! Because there are only 4 now and customers could have yelled liar! False advertising yet I would have done that for quality reasons and not to deceive the audience. (Don Houston- don't ask why didn't we make it a double disc set? lol). I know Den had a major problem last year with a big company and I they really tried to fix the problem. They do listen to you guys. The point is that errors happen but if you think a company is purposely leading you down the garden path then don't purchase their product and pick up Flight Attendants instead. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. |
| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | The only problem is that there is no standardized format for such reviews. Some reviewers only express their opinions and don't say much about what actually happens in the film. Other reviewers aren't specific enough about who does what. Which leaves you wondering whether that lady you like gets a DP in the film or not? And only some reviewers describe the action adequately enough to help me decide whether this is a film I want to see or not. I think for each porn film, film studios should write up a brief factual plot of what happens in each scene and who does what. And they should post that information on the internet for those who want to know what it is that they are buying, before they buy. Giving away the plot is probably the best thing porn studios can do in their descriptions of the porn films they make. Because porn is visual and not verbal. An explicit verbal description of the sex-action only makes the viewer want to see that action on screen. If film studios start to provide that kind of detailed information about their films. Then I wouldn't care much about how accurate or inaccurate their box-covers are. It's like not a lot of people complain about inaccurate illustrations on the covers of books. Because the buyers of books are free to leaf through the book briefly and decide by looking at the content of the book rather than at the cover. Don't judge the book by its cover, is a common saying. And this should be true for porn films too. |
| Rosco Fuji Deactivated User On the licking stick, Mr. Magic Dick! 3309 Posts 2/09 | Some Like it Dark is the classic case of what’s on the box cover is not on the disk. On the cover of this release we have three photos; a Thug (the dark portion)in the background, one of the Moore sisters in classic booty bitch pose in the foreground, and also in another background shot, The Moore Sisters. The Moore Sisters are both nude, posed with one standing, and the other sitting in front of her with a hand on the sister’s belly. The cover also says, “Featuring The Moore Sisters.” The spine shot has the thug standing and he has a sister standing on either side of him with his arms around each of them. This shot is also the primary shot on the back cover. This is long been an established shot in the porn world for a 3way between those three individuals. All of the other stills on this cover are definitely in the background and aren’t full color, but a pink/purple, so the standing Moore Sisters/Thug shot is definitely the draw. If you’ve read this far, you know what comes next. At no point in this release are the sisters remotely in the same scene. Hell, their scenes aren’t even back to back, but they book end the release. Porn producers will cry foul real quick if someone rips them off, but the minute it's the other way around the general feeling from the porn producing community on this issue is, "oh well, better luck next time." But most of the other studios are more video-focused, so their good pics must be going into a black hole somewhere. |

| BigBobxxx Senior Member 2681 Posts 5/04 | Mistakes are another matter, and I can understand how the "artwork/authoring disconnect" sometimes causes unintended problems. Of course, in my world (IAFD), companies that can't even spell their performer's names correctly always amazes me You think I make these things up, but having a performer with three, even four, spellings of their name -- in the same movie -- is not as uncommon as you would think (i.e. name on the box cover, title credits, scene and end credits... all different). Since I probably deal with these issues more often than most of you (with the exception of some reviewers), let me share this thought: It's the SAME studios that get it wrong all the time. Also, there are studios that, reliably, get it correct 99%+ of the time. There are studios that care about their product, and about you, the consumer. And, as we all know, there are those that don't One of my current pet peeves involves the releasing of compilation DVDs made to appear as if they are new movies. This is becoming rampant! Even when studios release compilations that are clearly marketed as such, the quality is all over the map! For example, Wicked has been releasing dozens of compilations over the past year or two (i.e. easily 50-100 DVDs). For the most part, they are pretty darn good and clearly labeled (pretty accurately too). Compilations are what they are, and, IMHO, Wicked is delivering fair value for the money. Some of the older stuff isn't even available anymore, if it weren't for the compilations. Vivid, on the other hand (and why is it Vivid that consistently disappoints?), also is ramping-up their 4-hour compilations of late. I just "love" being forced to watch five minutes of ads -- every fucking time -- I want to play the movie. You are unable to skip them. I "love" having the movie interrupted with more ads during the actual movie itself. And, of course, the "Leisure Time" VHS video "quality" on top of it. As I said, it's always the same good studios, and the same consistently sub-standard studios. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but... Yes, we notice it, it annoys us and we do care! If your business-model depends on short-changing your customers with deceptive crap -- just because you think it doesn't matter and your bottom-line isn't really affected -- think again! There's a new, uncertain era that we are moving into. And, consumers are not going to tolerate the same shoddy, deceptive products that the unscrupulous porn outfits have gotten away with all these many years! Good for Den for caring and speaking out! |
| Jacco All-Star Member "liable to deprave and corrupt" 2673 Posts 5/04 | Unskippable ads, no excuse, your movie is out. 'Errors' on the boxcover, too many or too obvious and you're out too. We only pick 30-40 titles a month to recommend so we are strict. I am one of the people who do the first screening and if things annoy me, I assume they will annoy our customers too, so we won't sell that movie. And talking about spelling, I've seen movies where the title was spelled differently on the spine, the cover and in the menu. Talk about quality control! Jacco |

If he received no complaints about certain thing, it's not that people don't care, it's just that we do not expect things to change by voicing complaints. You have to go back several years as to how Vivid packaged their two-three-part movies. Often you did not know you were watching part 1, and by reading the box cover of the early Janine titles you had no clue she was only delivering g/g scenes. Mispelling of names was rampant. Video quality was poor. |
| astroknight Questionable Moderator Tastes so good... 4187 Posts 11/99 | There's also a difference between what we like and what we get. No, I don't care about position menus, trailers, or photo galleries, but if the company is going to lie about what's on their DVD then that gives me reason to not trust them in the future as well. | Len801 Deactivated User 754 Posts 9/07 | Jacco, you can't tell me that everything is done behind their backs or that they have NO control over any situation or casting call they get. When you accept to appear in a Indian-themed movie, they give you a "indian costume" and jewelry and tell you do do an exotic dance, etc etc, they can't explain that away and tell us "I had no idea what role I was playing" yada yadda yadda. They may say they did not know they would bill me in the box cover as "Shweta", etc but they KNOW they were playing fake Indians, fake Arabs, fake asians, fake latinas. They go along with the sharade, when it suits them. But the ultimate responsibility for it all falls on the movie producers/distributors. Without them all the fakery would not be possible: they pay for it, they enable it and they package the final product. What names they give the performers, how they spell it, what roles they play, what the DVD contains, the technical quality, it really is ALL of their making. There is a certain amount of "fiction" involved in mainstream filmmaking as there is in adult entertainment. Hollywood can hire a 13-year old girl to play a 9 year-old girl and it will probably be convincing. Anthony Quinn and other actors have played all kinds of roles in their long careers. Whether they succeeded in convincing us of their varying ethnicity, accents, etc (totally, partially) is another question. But when an adult production company is trying to peddle a movie supposedly featuring Indian girls, when none of them are, then giving them them fake "indian" names, then there is something very wrong. We are no longer talking about "fiction", play-acting and make-believe, it is out and out fakery. When they frequently mispell their porn names, put something on the box cover that is not in the movie, selling you a movie and not telling you it's only part 1 of 2 or 3, telling you the movie is over 2 1/2 hour long but is really barely 2 hours (they have problems timing the running length of a movie?), trying to hide the fact it's really a compilation and not a movie with new material, etc, then you are supposed to trust them and keep continuing to rent/buy their product? Trust is something you build your reputation on. Don't always blame falling sales on piracy and the like. You put out good stuff and be truthful in the way it is advertised, then people will learn to trust and appreciate your product. |

| The The Member 196 Posts 2/06 | All this stuff does matter; looking at the front cover draws me in, and what lies on the back can sell me (or turn me off). I want to get exactly what I see. So if companies can't do that, it makes me turn against their product, and I will remember, I will carry that grudge, and I won't buy their product. As far as extras on a DVD, BTS footage is cool as long as there is enough of it. I don't understand having 3 minutes of BTS footage, because it's not worth watching something so short. I have one DVD where I find the 15 minutes of BTS footage more interesting and exciting than the main movie. I don't care to look at photo galleries, but I actually do like to watch the photo shoot itself. I like hearing the photographer giving instructions, as well as the pop of the flash bulbs, and the beep from the flash ready indicator. I also like to see the girls getting their makeup done, and picking out their outfits. In these instances I think it appeals to me because it's tantamount to the calm before the storm. |

Vivid is just one of the major and many porn companies who have had their share in the ways they market their movies. In 1983 Caballero released a movie called "LADY LUST". It put on the box cover Edy Williams, who did a lot of mainstream movies, was at one time married to Russ Meyer and appeared in a few of his movies. Read how they plugged the event on box cover: "Now, in her first, fully X-rated video, you'll see the incredible Edy Williams bare it all in a torrid tale of raw sexual delight! ...And you get to see it all in glorious and graphic detail. Lady Lust is pure sexual dynamite!". What you actually got was Edy doing simulated sex! For JENNA INK (1996) on the back of the tape box, Wicked hyped the movie’s last scene with the following blurb: “A boot camp scorcher featuring Jenna’s first ever anal & double penetration!”. What it turned out to be was essentially a vaginal penetration by Brad Armstrong, with a vibrator inserted in her ass! For "ENCORE" (1995), Vivid advertised and made it appear that Teri Weigel was performing a DP, when in reality is was a double-pussy penetration: "It's Teri Weigel's return to video, and she's not just back---she's back with an ass-pounding vengeance! ...and thank them with a big double-pussy, double penetration!" Was it possible to determine that SINDERELLA (1992) was a 2-parter and that the second part/sequel would be titled THE STEPSISTER? Each movie runs about one hour and 15 minutes (second parter recapped to some extent what was in part 1)? How long did it take for THE STEPSISTER to be released? However, when they are latinas and appear in an "asian-themed" movie and go on with the farce, they are just as guilty. But the ultimate responsibility lies with the distributor in hiring such a person to play an "asian" when they know fully well they are NOT. It is equally silly and shoddy for such companies to hire a 23-24 year old woman to be featured in a "teen" movie. And perhaps someone can explain what is a "teen MILF"? I mean, a MILF is a woman of a "certain age" who has had children and is still quite desirable to a young man who would like to get in her pants. |
| hollywood woody Senior Member Death is caused by swallowing small amounts of saliva over a long period of time. George Carlin 1567 Posts 2/07 | Den then knowingly posted the matter on a forum I cannot access or respond to (I’ve gone over it before with him), conveniently leaving out the context of our ongoing conversation (which sprang forth from his complaints about the AVN awards not using his rules to pick nominees in a particular category; the man graciously apologizing here on LIB later when the verbiage was made clear). Vivid is aware of the issue but just as I wouldn’t sanction the missing “extra”, I wasn’t about to cut off my nose to spite my face either. 4+ hours of movie, ~110 minutes of bonus scenes, ~ an hour of BTS, trailers, and a photogallery combined for a Highly Recommended package made Bounce #2 well worth checking into, especially for fans of Hannah Hilton (who has left porn IIRC). To me, mentioning mistakes on covers is important but if my response is to yell “fraud” and try to initiate criminal proceedings on a company before having the decency of calling the company to verify whether it is a mistake, a last minute choice, or intentional, people would rightfully marginalize what I said. Remember that Den was the one trying to get the Ohio Attorney General prosecuting Hustler awhile back for leaving out a couple minutes of BTS footage on a portion of their titles. You can view that as being a consumer advocate or going overboard as you see fit but for those of you seeing runaway prosecutions during the Bush years, it’s worth thinking about. So, if I found the huge package of material in Bounce #2 good enough to overlook a marginal aspect that no one has ever brought up in the past, I stand by my review. And if I occasionally tease Den about his summaries and he bounces one back (pun intended) about my reviews, it has been repeatedly pointed out that none of this will matter in a few years given the changes in the industry. I will not run to big brother government to get a company in trouble over something so insignificant as he choose to, and I will still base the rating on the totality of the package instead of the tiniest of aspects (a second worth of choking merits a bottom score from Den too; even in a movie about rough sex where the ladies want it that way), but I will support his opinion as independent as any other online. :) If you think about it for one second, what would be the upside to us lying or deliberatly mis-leading someone. It is an obvious mistake. To blow it up and make a mountain out of a mole hill is kind of ridiculous. Let's look at what you are really talking about, something in the BTS was not there, not that we advertised 5 scenes and there were 4, not that we said there is anal and there wasn't, not that we said a girl was in it and wasn't. The movie was excellent, period. If we made a mistake we will correct it. How is it that when all the other big companies who started when Vivid did are gone or forgotten, but Vivid grows year after year? Because we put out a great product, that a lot of people really enjoy and come back for more. Ted who said Vivid isn't porn, I will bet hasn't seen a Vivid movie in years and years, if ever. It seems to be, our harshest critics are the guys that don't buy porn. To make the statement all porn is bullshit pretty much shows lack of thought. Porn is a huge industry, some is bad, some is good, some is great, as with everything else in this world. If he thinks it is all bullshit, why does he watch it? He watches it to jerk off, so it serves its purpose. If it such bullshit, why are you on here? Edited by - hollywood woody on 12/16/2009 12:54:47 PM |

B Skow reviews, on this site, are all excellent. I think this is a case of contempt prior to investigation. Vivid has made a huge turn about in the last year, people that were detractors, such as yourself, have become customers after seeing movies like Bounce, all the Nikki Jayne movies, all the B Skow movies. I really don't mind if you think it sucks if you have seen it, but you clearly are making a statement that doesn't reflect the reviews here and everywhere else in the past year. Here is a sampling from customers, not critics. These reviews are from Gamelink. They are from regular customers, not professional reviewers, and taken from VOD and DVD. I think this shows that people who are watching Vivid movies are really happy with them. Hanna's House B. Skow followed Hanna around her house for a few days and shot everything in sight.
