Why are you screaming? Is it something to be concerned about and monitored, yes. Is the media blowing it way out of proportion to try and frighten people, absolutely. It's likely its been around for some time now, it was first discovered in November..plenty of Chinese have traveled around the world in those 4 months. The only people that should be concerned are the elderly but that goes for most infections and diseases that they can potentially encounter
In Europe the situation is serious but it's not that tragic at the moment. You basically have to stay at home watching tv or being on internet, which is certainly something that could not be compared to wars or other tragedies. I could be a bit cynical but the worst side of the story will be the economic repercussion. I think that in America the problem will be way more serious, since the lack of healthcare for a lot of people and the fact that you have to pay thousand of dollars even to know if you have it or not (that means: you will not know how has the virus and who does not have it), which is free here.
I live in Italy and I'm not as panicked as you are, calm dowm man , true it's a lot more seriuos than many think, true many government tried and still try to minimize it including the Italian one at first , true many Countries are hiding the numbers by blaming a previous condition , true most of the dead are the elderly (who still are parents to someone) but there are some who aren't for example Patient one here , the one who was first diagnosed COVID-19 without any linkage to China or South Corea, was hospitalized on February 19th , 22 days ago , it's a 38 old man a CEO with a very active man used to run marathons frquently and also a player of the local Amateurish football/soccer club, so young and very healthy and yet he's been intubated and attached to a breathing machine ,he's been freed from that two days ago and could begin to talk just today , 23 days later.
Of those found positive we have 20% hospitalized of which 25% in Intensive care attached to a ventilator and the remaining 75% can breath by themselves but need an oxygen mask . 30% of those found positive are treated at home , the remaining 50% can stay isolated at home with no particular care
Reassuming 1 out of 5 need an hospital and need help to breathe definitely nothing like a flu
It is already, but the lack of tests is hiding this , thank God they closed all flights , so that we can effectively take care of our own turf
BTW I'm very concerned by the virus' progression in Spain it's spreading incredibly fast ,we reached 3,000 cases on March 4th two weeks after the official beginning of the outbreak with 100 deaths two days later when we locked down all of northern Italy , but Spain reached 3,000 after just a week of thorough testing [link deactivated:Server error]https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/[/url]
Germany and France are slower but still growing at an higher rate than we did after a week we had just 800 positive testing
But then again we closed all flights from China since January 20th, they didn't
The sobering fact about this whole pandemic situation in my mind is how poorly prepared the most "advanced" countries are for this type of outbreak. True that the fear at the moment is a bit disproportionate to the threat, but where my sentiment seems to differ from many others in that, I see the fear as good practice and will be beneficial for this and new outbreaks in the future. Its been over a century since a virus this virulent has surfaced and we should consider ourselves lucky that it is the year 2020 with coronavirus and not the influenza of 1918. But still our "advanced" countries and their governments limit there own successes. In 1918 people had no idea what the cause of the sickness was. In 2020 we now have knowledge of viral infections and doctors in China identified the cause of the sickness quickly. Yet the Chinese government suppressed information and delayed launching its countermeasures which certainly did not help in curtailing the global spread of this virus. In 1918 The mortality rate was a bit below around 2.7% and death came for those in ALL age groups, perfectly healthy 20 year olds would fall ill and be in a grave in a matter of DAYS. In 2020 while data on corona is still limited, the existing data seems to suggest a lower mortality rate with the majority of those severe cases effecting the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Beyond that, we now have antibiotics that can help treat secondary bacterial infections that accompany viral infections that would otherwise lead to increased mortality rates. We have antivirals, which are less dependable than antibiotics, but certainly can help curb a few of those mortality statistics. It will take quite some time to eventually develop a vaccine, but my point is we have the knowledge, we have the technology, our governments just don't have the will until panic sets in and by then its too late. Now we see in the U.S. how poor management and slow action can lead to mass panic and now we are on our way to an overwhelmed healthcare system and a dramatic economic downturn. I can remember in my college days sitting in Microbiology listening to the professor ask the class how we all believed the world would fare against a virus like the Spanish flu in the modern era. A nearly unanimous consensus was reached that we would all be much better at handling a global pandemic save for me and a few others who agreed "we'd be soooo fucking screwed." With the amount of worldwide travel and the bureaucratic nature of government structure It was easy for me to recognize how dangerous the threat of global pandemics could be. If you live in an "advanced" country, fear the virus, but fear your government even more as they will inevitably fail this test of unity and coordination in these matters without the FEAR. This coronavirus only affirms to me that we are all still horrendously under prepared for when a deadly new strain of influenza, marburg, or a more virulent mutation in ebola surfaces. Luckily this is not that bug and It will peter out eventually but I hope the fear will finally motivate change so that we don't loose 1/3 of the worlds population during the next one.

So, uh, has porn production come to a halt in Porn Valley, or is it still business as usual out there right now?
As far as I can tell, people are still shooting with the caveat of some producers telling you to go home if you so much as sniffle on set, and some performers deciding to opt out of shooting for/with other people until this is all over. I think the way they're handling it is that until someone in the industry gets tested and diagnosed, or until LA and/or Las Vegas and/or Miami has so many cases that it becomes a lockdown situation in that city, there's not gonna be an official moratorium called.
It's mostly a matter of will, any strong containment measures have a cost so no elected representative is likely to take them unless force and with general agreement from his voters, even to ackonowledge there is a potential epidemic cluster has a cost. Every goverment tends to minimize or deny this at least at first, so did China and so did Italy and so did France , Germany and Spain until forced to take action , by either the increasing dead toll or an increasing demand from the voters.
In my non-Valley but US neck of the woods, performers and models seem cautious.
The media is stupid as usual, I'm not personally bothered by this Corona thing. But, it is hard not to feel at least some concern, even simply for logistics, with quarantines and shut-downs and the like.

AVN.com is covering this. Looks like EvilAngel just announced a production suspension. https://avn.com/business/articles/video/evil-angel-to-temporarily-suspend-production-874966.html Girlfriends Films now too, no production hold yet: https://avn.com/business/articles/video/fsc-issues-coronavirus-advisory-for-adult-industry-874968.html
Yeah. Saw that in the newsletter. No surprise of course. Companies have to do that. But I wonder what the mood is like elsewhere in the porn 'indie' scene.

As someone who has had Dengue fever, Chikungunya and the Zika virus; neither of the three is something you want to have, believe me. This CoVid19 is something that should be taken serious in terms of prevention but there is no real need to think it is the end of the world the way the media is portraying it. My concern is protecting my love ones and doing everything possible to keep them from catching it or if they do catch it make sure they are well taken care of. So just like condoms take precautions.
Yesterday everything was "great" as always for Donald, now he declared the national emergency. In Germany most of the states shut down school system, Austria and Italy react even worse.
Kind of panic everywhere.
What is interesting to know, is how the virus affects the porn industry during the following weeks. No production anymore (like the anouncement today), but maybe higher demand due to people staying home for a while and have more time to surf the net and watch.

^ Being that all production will come to a halt, it'll be interesting to see what - if any - porn sites can keep up with their regular update rates during the hiatus.

^ Maybe we'll get to see some gems earlier than intended? Or old unreleased scenes finally seeing the light of day! I'm curious how deep some of these sites backlog their shoots. Probably start seeing deals on Snapchat/Onlyfans/Manyvids pages soon, discounted solos, customs, etc

Thanks for the info everyone. I've been wondering about this. This is an industry that would seem to be especially hard hit by this situation, but also one that few people talk about.
If the NBA, NCAA, major league baseball, Broadway, several public school systems, etc. have all locked down, the porn industry probably neds to shut down production and make an announcement. While the number of people on a porn set is fairly low and the performers this side of Steve Holmes probably won't get too seriously ill, if any form of contact is going to transmit the virus, being in a porn movie will likely provide it. We live in a culture that looks for ways to demonize the industry and those who work in it. Any suggestion that the valley, Miami, etc. weren't careful enough and there'll be a very possible return to criminalizing it again.
Unless the performers are over 65 no more risk than a cold. Tanking the world economy is going to lead to a depression later this year, mass layoffs, loss of homes a global economic calamity. What s being done is going to negatively affect each and everyone of us. I guess every year now we will shut the world down from November to March in order to help those who are vulnerable to dying from the flu.
^ Even if your expertise on the symptoms were true, the risk doesn't end with the performers, does it? The performers don't live in a gated community where the more susceptible demographics are out of reach.
I don't subscribe to the media's panic or the OP's hysteria but at the same time, people should be responsible and vigilant.
Take a chill pill and relax. Panic isn't going to help anyone.

I had an email exchange with one industry insider who said that many of the big companies are shutting things down, but the smaller outfits are trying to keep going for now.

Washington State is closing down all restaurants starting tomorrow and going through the end of the month. I expect California will follow suit within a few days. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to shut down all porn shoots as well.
^I'd imagine the state has bigger fish to fry than shutting down porn shoots. Besides one only has to look at all the moratoriums due to HIV that fell flat after a few days.
There are rumors that the president will order a 2 week mandatory quarantine for the nation, whatever that means for all of us and the porn industry in particular.
Its means demand would go up, and supply would go down. onlyfans, manyvids, and most cam sites would probably cash in big time. If they had compassion they would pay the performers much more on those platforms to try and not only compensate their lost incomes but dissuade any stars thinking about shooting in risky situations... that being said, it's just a rumor and probably a very false one at least for now. I can't even take the official stuff that comes out of the white house without a grain of salt, or in this administrations case, a 5lb bag of it.

Really? Because the way I think it would work is that the Department of Health (or whatever its called in CA) would probably produce a list, to the governor's office, of of activities/industries it recommends shutting down and it's pretty easy to add "adult entertainment industry" to that list. As for compliance by the industry, I don't know. But it's not hard for the state to put porn valley on the list.
^^^ and one has to definitely look at more than just the HIV moratorium. You're trying to compare apple to oranges. This thing spreads by contact and proximity. Abstinence or a condom is not going to prevent the spread. BTW 6 San Francisco Bay Area counties just told residents to shelter in place.
^&^^ Well, I think an HIV issue is way more serious that the current pandemonium. And; IIRC, the state didn't order halt in production during any HIV scares, so why would they now? Plus, we don't operate under martial law in this country, so regardless of what any state agency "orders", it's not like the police are going to be kicking in doors to enforce it. On top of that, not every company is sitting on the resources of an Evil Angel sized company, so I'd say any moratoriums would fade in 2 weeks when the bills start coming due and no one's getting paid.
Full disclosure: I haven't a fucking clue about anything I'm about to write. Think of this as "Green's Law of Argument." Anything is possible if you don't know what you're talking about.
It seems to me that Covid-19 will, or at least should, affect the porn industry. Admittedly people in the adult business are more at risk of HIV than the general population but it seems to me that since there are active moves to flatten the curve of the spread of the virus through things such as social distancing that porn would be a prime place to target. Maybe this is me putting on rose coloured glasses but it would be the smart thing to do to shut down production until this blows over. I know this is an over-simplification, but with most STDs, HIV included, some basic steps can be taken to provide a reasonable level of protection. Condoms would be a good example. However, with Covid-19 being spread as it is, it seems that shooting sex scenes might be best avoided for a while.
What I wonder about is that if reputable porn studios shut down production for a while when will that actually affect scenes being uploaded to sites? My guess is that due to the lag time between actually shooting the scenes and the post-production work needed it might be summer or later before we start to see any effect. Take smaller sites that only upload one scene per week - Hookup Hotshot and Amateur Allure come to mind - will we see them have to dial back to one or two scenes per month as the effects of Covid-19 hit them?

It seems like the main thing is to keep large crowds from being infected by a few individuals and overwhelming the medical system. Right now we are all holding our breath hoping we don't end up with 100s of thousands of people needing serious medical care. As long as we don't overwhelm hospitals and stuff with too many people then it won't be as big a deal health-wise. Economically we're already headed for some tougher times. Once we get testing capacity ramped up, it will just be another thing talent (and all of us) will test for. Hopefully most people will get the infection, never have any symptoms worse than a cold, and obtain immunity.
I honestly feel like in 2-3 months the industry as a whole won't have changed much at all. I hope! Just my 2 cents. Stay healthy everyone.

Unfortunately, like most people here in the States, he just doesn't get it...it's not about you getting seriously ill and dying from this virus, it's about you getting the virus and infecting another person who could get seriously ill and die from it.

Uh, I think it will be much sooner when popular porn sites run out of new content to release; I don't expect the sites I like and follow (HardX, Evil Angel, Blacked, Vixen, for example) to be able to maintain their update rates for much longer. Some sites, like Jules Jordan's and Brazzers, might have a decent collection of scenes "in the can" that they can put out, but I don't expect most sites to be able to give us new content for much longer.

In his press conference today, the orange man admitted that this will likely go into the fall. Based on some other sources, it seems like that's a nationwide projection and and that some places that are hot right now will clear up sooner than that. But overall, we can expect hot spots to keep popping up in different places, probably through the rest of the year. And obviously, without a vaccine, areas that clear up could go hot again.
The thing about porn is that people are working pretty much the closest possible proximity to each other. That's not great, but most scenes are 1-on-1 and it's not like humans are going to stop having sex. And then you have a few other people on set. It could be that by limiting the total number of people on set and probably taking some other precautions, studios can resume shooting in 2-3 months.
The biggest problem for the porn industry is that, generally speaking, this is spread through saliva and it's somewhere between nearly and completely impossible to shoot a scene between two people without the saliva of one person coming in contact with the other (unless you force them both to wear airtight masks the entire scene). This, combined with both the fact that we don't have enough tests in the US for people in general and performers specifically, and the fact that you can actually infect other people while asymptomatic, means that transmission on set was really just a matter of when, not if, the longer they kept shooting. Maybe once there's enough tests out there that they can be taken more freely performers can test for it and then shoot, but until then it's understandable that some people are just considering the risks to be too great right now.
Yeah, sites like Evil Angel will most likely run out of new content around June. Mike Adriano for example might have to stop releasing new material very soon. It is well known that his schedule is very tight.
My prediction is that most sites if not all will very soon start to release less new content, lower their prices and even offer some BTS from old content. Demand for porn will rise while people have to stay at home, but supply of new porn won't be provided. Not at the current pace or anything close.
I'm thinking Jules Jordan and Pierre Woodman might be able to continue with their pace for a while longer.
This crisis could have a long term impact in the porn industry.

It looks like the VMG websites are pushing out their update frequency to 7-8 days. Even so, I doubt they have a backlog of more than a few weeks of content.
I stopped production last week-end. Situation is very serious in Europe now and people are obliged by police to stay home in many countries. Anyone continuing would be oblivious and even criminal ...
^ Pierre - thanks for taking the time to mention this here. Here in North America we haven't been hit as hard (and here in Canada we're hit less hard than the US - so far at least) so it is good to hear that some in the adult industry are taking this as seriously as it needs to be.
As far I know, you and Jules Jordan have plenty of unreleased material and your release schedule doesn't consist of 5 to 14 releases per week, like other sites/producers, so this forced production halt might not affect you both the way it will affect others, or not at all in terms of releasing material, depending of how long this crisis takes.
That's what happens when you release 25 scenes a week as opposed to 1 DVD every quarter. Hope those guys saved some scenes in the vault for things like this.
