After she walked away, she came back to promote her attention-whoring self as a crusader. Give it to her good and hard and for a long time.

First I would just like to say that it's good to see more well written and open minded posts on this site and specifically in this thread. I read a lot of well thought out and discussed opinions.
Even though I don't agree with Shelly mixing her personal religious beliefs with her agenda, I can't say that it's a bad thing her wanting to be there and help people who feel they need it. I'm sure there are some porn performers who can handle what they do on a day to day basis, but it's pretty evident that most performers wind up in porn due to some kind of abuse, whether it's been done to them or they are abusing some kind of substance. It's also extremely likely that due to a lot of performers getting into the business at a young age, they really aren't mature enough to know what's good for them. If they are in a business surrounded by other like minded individuals, then it's safe to assume that there aren't really any alternative life styles for them to adapt to, which in turn would just influence them even more to continue staying in a state of possible confusion and unhappiness.
Obviously, some form of pornography has always existed and probably always will. Just like I believe about any major industry, there needs to be regulation that is enforced. The porn industry is just such an industry that could use some more regulation that would hopefully improve many different factors within it.

iafd.com has her down for only 12 scenes from 1994 - 1995, and the companies that she typically worked with weren't your high-enders, either.
It also says that she got into the business at the age of ~26 years old -- hardly an ingenue when it comes to life.

Shelley is also the executive director of Pink Cross Foundation, a non-profit organization that reaches out to porn stars and sex workers to help them rebuild their lives as well as helping those who struggle with porn addiction.

I can imagine that Shelley Lubben might be sincerely trying to help women abused in porn (but what about men abused in porn?). I can imagine it, but don't yet buy it.
YouWish makes good sense to me. I am positively and definitely certain that many studios are run by very nasty men who wouldn't spit on a starlet to save her life. Or would only do so to film it and release it as a new genre. But YouWish likes some version of 'good porn' and sells that. Great, I wish more sellers used more discrimination in choosing what to sell; maybe the scumbags would get fewer dollars and piss off back to whatever two-bit bar in Bumfuck, Nebraska they came from.
As a porn viewer it's always been abundantly obvious to me that a lot of the girls don't have a great time overall. We know a pornstar's career is usually short, and certainly fashions and ageing affect that. But a lot of stars are in the biz for less than a year. That's not fashion and age. They're leaving because they can't stand it, one way or another.
On the other hand there are stars who have stayed around for decades. Nina Hartley, for instance. A very sensual and sexual woman, keeps herself fit, still looks great, smart as a whip, to me she obviously has a sincere fascination with sex and enjoys it. I imagine she's had times she was treated badly too, but obviously either they weren't too bad or she sorted out a way to get what she wanted without tolerating too much shit. So she stayed around and made a career.
I agree with Random Precision's earlier points about who is likely to get into porn. Lessee ... you couldn't reach 18 without knowing that porn is approximately as frowned upon as prostitution. Just that fact means a volunteer must be a bit anti-authority or at least untrusting of authority or unwilling to go along. People like to think all teenagers are rebellious. Well, no, certainly not to that extent. You're looking at a small proportion who'd be so rebellious as to go into porn.
And porn producers know this. Like any prospective employer they need to know who to look for, who to put a little time into. They seek the girls who don't want to do what society tells them to do, or don't believe the story, or feel they can't follow those rules, or feel they aren't worthy of fitting in. It can be more or less, but the ideal girl is a bit fucked up, certainly not someone who feels like she fits into the mainstream, and she probably lacks social support.
I'm glad that evidently isn't so for all porn performers, but I can see that a nasty piece of work producing porn would look at things that way and look for signs of vulnerability and rebelliousness. This isn't rocket science. On the other hand, and this is really important IMO, what is a fucked up girl supposed to do? She doesn't fit in with the world, she has no family support, she's already living in the fast lane anyway. In porn she might at least find like-minded people and some sort of support. Is it better to stay alone and desperate or share your desperation with others? Maybe her only options are porn or Shelley Lubbens.
But Shelley Lubbens could be just as parasitic as those producers. She could also be looking for women who are vulnerable to her "Gud luuurvs yooooooo" routine. After all, any girl who gets into porn because she's a little fucked up is in need of one thing for sure: love. Shelley comes along with all that sugar-coated love and porn-girl is a sucker for just a different bad deal. I don't trust evangelists.

^If you take a look at the way Lubben presents herself in some of her own youtube videos, her behavior is "interesting" to say the least.
She also doesn't make the same distinctions that "You Wish" does. She dislikes all porn--from what I can tell--and she would likely dislike You Wish for selling it and almost certainly us for buying it.
As an example, You Wish is good with selling Vivid (great company, IMO), but I have seen (on youtube) Lubben doing a whole "segment" (for lack of a better word) in which she was chasing Steven Hirsch around a convention trying to get him to do a "debate" with her. The whole thing had a professional wrestling feel to it.
Further, if one looks at Lubben's group's sites--at least as of a number of months ago--they take pictures of actresses at conventions when they are just kind of sitting there and put captions as to how "sad" they truly are.
It's propaganda--and not even good propaganda--at best.
A far better approach for her would have been to strike a more moderate ground--which is what You Wish actually appears to possess, even as she appears to extol the virtues of an extremist who would likely dislike her. People respond well to being reasonable. If Lubben were to point out which companies she didn't like, drop the wrestling shtick, and not hate absolutely everything about the adult film industry...all the while "helping" actresses w/o making huge propaganda pieces out of them...I think that she might be more credible.

So Julie Meadows and her husband are on the case now.
Today, they posted 4 vids to youtube about the Pink Cross foundation tax receipts for years 2008 & 2009. There's a lot of info in these vids. You may or may not want to watch the entirety of the 4 vids. What I got from them is that there isn't necessarily a 'smoking gun' per se in the analysis, but what is certainly clear is that the vast majority of the money received to her "charity" that is devoted to helping out ex-porn stars is not going to the porn stars. In 2008, it's somewhere in the neighbourhood of 2.3% of the money she received that doesn't go directly to her or to her expenses for showing up at porn conventions, and is left for helping girls (or guys) in need. That's far too small a portion of the funds, given that she claims (or used to claim - more on that if you watch the vids) that the organization's purpose is helping out the girls.

^ Short answer: yes.
Long answer: according to her tax forms, she paid herself a salary of $25,000 in 2008 and approximately $45,000 in 2009. But there are many other things in the forms that one could say go directly to her as well. Just one example is that make-up etc. is donated to Pink Cross foundation for their only employee, Shelley Lubben. So whatever make-up costs, she doesn't pay that as it comes to her from the foundation. Now, maybe she only uses the donated make-up when she is doing Pink Cross-related appearances, and maybe not. Only she would know for sure. Anyway, as I say that's just one example. If you do decide to watch the vids in their entirety you'll see a few more examples like that.

^ Yup.
If you watch the vids, it seems that now (2010) they've got a new mission statement that talks a lot more about lobbying and such than it does about helping out porn girls in need, so if in their 2010 tax statement they once again have very little money going to the girls, then whatever, that's their business. But according to their stated purpose in 2008 & 2009, the majority of their efforts (and money) should have been going to helping out ex-porn performers... which was not the case.

Reminds me of a "charity" we had open an account at the credit union that I retired from. He claimed to help innocent people that were wrongfully convicted of crimes and subsequently imprisoned in the prison system. He would get donations from people (mostly poor relatives of the imprisoned, I did actually recognize the names of some of the people on the checks), cash the checks and spend them on himself (which I saw with my own two eyes, so did several other CU staff members). He was also a "former" felon himself that had done time for violent offenses. Since we did not want to be associated with swindlers such as this guy, we "encouraged" him to take his business elsewhere. This guy was raking in at least a thousand dollars a month from poor, disenfranchised people and using it on his "personal expenses". Shelly and the guy I just described above could both go to prison for what they do/did. If you use the name of charity you have to use the money for charitable means, not personal expenses! Mr. "Wrongfully Convicted" Felon went back to prison (on unrelated charges, but still karma hit him in the ass) and Shelly Lubben should go there as well for what they do/did! I hope Shelly Lubben likes the feel of handcuffs and leg irons, because I see them in her future!

I was an unhappy, ashamed porn actor, therefore ALL porn actors must be unhappy and ashamed. Jesus made me feel better, therefore Jesus is the answer for all porn stars. I think so, therefore it is so.
All very typical of the not very bright but very arrogant human being. Undoubtedly she rationalizes her salary and other material advantages of her crusade as what Jesus wants her to do. For these people, God pretty much ends up serving their purposes, even if they believe that they are serving His.
My favorite has always been her "dead porn stars" video whose flawless logic is that because porn actors die, porn is wrong, by which we may extrapolate: plumbers die, plumbing is wrong; ministers die, religion is wrong; and, of course, repenting porn actors die, repenting of porn is wrong. Say! maybe the logic IS flawless.

I'm in Australia but I expect the law is similar. In most Western countries there is a percentage that must be spent on the charitable cause and the rest is okay to spend on administration, which includes wages and expenses. So, for example, in some countries you can still claim charitable status even when you spend as much as 65% of funds raised on admin/wages/expenses and only 35% on the actual cause.
So to start with it's probably legal for her to spend up to 65% on herself anyway. The reason Ms Lubben probably won't go to jail is that it can be very difficult to work out whether or not funds are being spent on the charitable purpose, if your constitution is defined loosely. Ms Lubben's charity's mission statement saying that the purpose is to 'help' porn stars can include lobbying and advocacy whether that's stated or not. They can say that anything going towards lobbying and advocacy can be claimed as part of the charitable mission, ie makeup and clothes for TV appearances, a nice car for travel to meet politicians, an office in a reputable (expensive) building to host meetings and press conferences. And of course you'd need a safe home in a good neighbourhood so escapee porn stars can be sheltered.
You'd find it very difficult to make a charge of not using the funds properly stick, when it's so easy to make every facet of your life supposedly an aspect of your charitable mission. She can literally be spending 99% on herself and the rest on fliers, posters and stickers. It doesn't mean she's doing nothing and just raking in the dough - she's still pursuing her goal, but you can't tell where the line is between her own use of car/house etc and the charity's. That's why prosecutions hardly ever happen, even though it's evident to the average person that various charities are getting ripped off. I mean, does anyone seriously believe that the evangelist not-for-profits are building mansions for their founders because that's good for poor people in Somalia? Of course not, but that's basically what it's explained as in the accounts.
This is why so many people refuse to give to major national charities and only give to local charities they know are run by volunteers. A local charity, as long as it's audited, is probably spending less than 30% on admin/expenses, and many are spending less than 10% on those things, and the rest is genuinely going to the cause donors expect it to go to.

Uhg... It's funny how much attacking people do on this woman to discredit her and her work. She was ONLY in porn for a year or two... She ONLY did films for a couple of small companies... She STILL made porn! For there to be a non-profit organization set up to help people who are in or were in the porn industry, it would have to be started by SOMEONE who went through it to be considered sincere and of legitament quality.
Personally, she's WAY too much of a Jesus freak for me and I've always hoped that this never became an issue when trying to help someone in need, whether or not they were religious or not. What I can say is that there are a lot of people who want or need help that just CANT help themselves and it's rare to see someone trying to make a difference. I've always said that religion isn't for me, but not everyone is alike and if some people need religion to help them be an all around better, healthy person than so be it.
I say until you've walked a mile in someone else's shoes, then you can't be TOO judgemental. Her organization is only a couple of years old. That's pretty new and I'm sure they're still working out the bugs, like any business or organization does. And besides, I don't want to see ANYONE giving someone a "hard" time for just trying to make a differece and trying to improve the lives of others, since most people are just users and don't really give a squat about others in the first place. It's just not cool...

Reactionary morality stigmatizes performers and facilitates fly-by-night scumbags who abuse females to operate while LE goes after reputable producers like Stagliano/EA. BTW I have a fairly decent ability to read Spanish and if I were in power Paul Little wouldn't be in prison but he well might be Rebeca Linares financial slaveboi.

Yeah. They come from the same places everyone else comes from and they end up the same way everyone does. They simply choose to travel a rougher road than many do and with rougher roads come more dangers and the inevitable pileups. Why do you assume the life of some guy out here with his dick in his hand is so much better than the life of a porn performer?
We all have choices to make and ownership over ourselves gives us the right and freedom to make them.

I wish that we all had the inside track like this poster apparently does. I would have expected one so omniscient to be a bit less acerbic...but, whatever...
How does the $50,000 stack up to the amount that went to the actresses, though? Is the $50,000 in addition to all of the travel expenses, etc.?
While $50,000 isn't the biggest amount of money in the world, it isn't chump change, either -- and it certainly needs to be put in context relative to the rest of the organization's expenditures before being summarily dismissed.
But...what would I know? I'm just a "retard".

Hi, "You Wish"...or someone who is strikingly similar in style and content.
I'm sorry that you fail to see that a person's level of experience and personal exposure to something really does matter in their ability to make generalizations about it and fully assess it.
This is a minimization of her actions. Using the word "just" here makes this an incorrect statement by turning it into an understatement.

For one, I do not object to or denigrate Lubben's work or anybody's sincere effort to help others. That doesn't change that her views, like yours, are simple minded, sterotypical and uninformed. Nor does it affect my view that those who push Jesus as the answer to all problems can often cause people with real and devastating problems to get worse, not better, by keeping them from getting competent real treatment.
Lubben's conciet is that no one but her knows the truth about the porn business, that because it was the wrong choice for her it's the wrong choice for everyone. Your own conciet appears to be that all viewers of porn are self deluded uneducated masturbation addicts.
Whether or not you're just being sarcastic as ineptly as you type or proofread, I don't think we are the retarded ones here.
Like Lubben you may be presuming what we are, based on what you were yourself once. Folks so hostile to porn lovers are very often doing nothing more than trying to persuade themselves that they aren't one of them anymore. There was a fella on here a while ago who was like you but at least he had the integrity to admit he had been addicted to porn himself and now feared that everybody was.
Spend some time on ADT and you'll see if you bother looking that porn makers, actors, and their audience are no different than anybody else: some retards and addicts, yes, and some unpleasant people, but largely you will see here professionals and articulate highly educated reasonable people; kind and generous decent and funny people and many with whom you could, and may already, be friends.
You're unlikely to do that or admit that you might be mistaken. That would require learning and also questioning that things are as simple, and you are as superior, as youu think. But that means that the "retard,"
the one wearing blinders, who is kidding himself is you.

I do think too many people just assume a porn fan is going to be opposed to it (To the level of outright hostility) if a porn performer wants to get out of the business. To me, that's the kind of porn fan that gives us all a bad name. If any of them would be happier doing something else or if they think porn is a destructive thing in their life, I wish them the best in doing whatever they would prefer and sincerely hope they get out as soon as it's convenient for them to do so.
My issue with Shelly is not that she apparently had a rough time in porn and/or didn't like it so much as it is that she appears to just be anti porn altogether. If she is interested in improving conditions in the industry, within reason, I couldn't really oppose her on that. For instance if she wants to give the girls more say in what happens in a scene, I agree with that. I've always agreed with that.
If she thinks girls should know and be told and shown what they're getting into I agree with that as well. I think a lot of us do.
I do not agree with trying to destroy porn because you don't like the way things go in some aspects of the business.

I agree. In the US we have the freedom of choice. If a performer wishes to bow out after a few scenes, it may be lamentable, but completely her decision and I support it.

Yeah, I'm not seeing the problem here. I'm not seeing the hypocrisy. The Porn industry may not be what it was in the 60s and 70s, but you're hiding you're head in the sand to believe there isn't still some BS going on. You Wish isn't really saying anything new, certainly nothing that should surprise anyone.

I'm with RP. If a girl wants to quit, or if she hates what she's doing but hasn't quite walked out the door, I would prefer she quits.
TheDreamPolice, along with knowing what everyone thinks, seems sure how the girls in porn end up and where they come from. Since he hasn't made it clear, I'm not absolutely certain what he means. But I'd bet it's along these lines: most porn girls only get into it because of abuse/neglect/rape/low self-esteem/drug addiction/exploitation and most end up turning tricks in a back alley to get enough money for heroin, meth or crack, then die in a gutter.
If TheDreamPolice really thinks that he's watching someone in the middle of an inexorable journey from desperate misery to drug-addled death and he still whacks off to it, I can only say that seems revolting to me.
I whack off to beauty, vivacity, joie de vivre, a wicked glint in a sexy woman's eye, a lust-driven wanton encounter, people pushing their boundaries far enough to take their breath away and lift them to sexual euphoria. At least, that's what I'm looking for in porn, and once in a while I find one of those things in a scene, and sometimes more than one. If I get the idea of an exploited vulnerable woman who can't look after herself, I turn off.

Is is just a coincidence that three of Shelly's most notable "saved" girls -- Jersey Jaxin, Sierra Sinn and Michelle Avanti -- had heavy-duty (or at least notable) IR credentials on their resumes?
Just sayin'...

Has not it been said that once one goes black one doesn't go back?

Isn't it ironic that the "big names" Shelly touts are small-fry compared to the rest of the porn biz. Other than Sierra Sinn, I haven't even heard of the rest Dexington lists here.

^With the way she publicizes them and turns them into propaganda pieces, it seems like those who have been "saved" by Shelley are no less exploited than they were before...

Other than a tattoo I didn't really care for, Jersey Jaxin was cute. Probably more my type than Sierra Sinn. Though I liked her a lot too when she first came along.
