It follows sixteen adult performers and documents their lives in an atypical porn documentary way, rather more focusing on their stories of being women. It feels like an age since I wanted to see this and finally we have a release date, fingers crossed it lives up to expectations. If there was an overarching message the doc seemed to be wanting to say it's that social stigma causes problems for sex workers more than the work itself, most especially for women. [Link] |

I was kinda put off by the way Luke Ford and Bill Margold were putting down the women and wonder what people who actually work with performers but don't appear in the movies have to say and their insights on the performers. I'd be curious if any directors have the disdain for the women performers that Luke Ford has...even though his career is built off their backs. [Link] |

I had Deep Throat the documentary, but I never watched it. I wish I had, I'll have to get it again. Linda Lovelace hated her life when doing porn. It's interesting how much porn has changed. The women, the style of movies, everything. In porn I'm looking for people fucking, but old pornos like the Johnny Wadd films are just classic. It would be entertaining if porn directors would make a real film like a movie how they made the old 70's style pornos like Deep Throat and Debbie Does Dallas and tried, tried to make porn stars try to act, and even take that part seriously, but put some effort into the video too so it doesn't looks like a movie not like an online porn. The show is broken up into five half-hours and is hostted by Ron Jeremy and Alexis DeVell, who go around interviewing the performers on the set. Doesn't really offer any fresh insights into the adult industry, but it is good to see interviews with Samantha Strong and Peter North--I've always felt that North doesn't get as much attention as he deserves, given the longevity and the influence he's had with the industry. It may not be the best documentary on porn, but I think it is worth the time. _________________________________________________________________________________

The doc. is really interesting as it relates, among other things, how the feds leaned on Ginger in an effort to try to make her testify against the porn industry. Also, Ron Jeremy relates how when he met Ginger, he was shocked that such "a cute and adorable girl" was getting into porn. (but that was at the end of 1983, how things have changed, it's almost routine to have great looking women starring in porn today) And famed Penthouse photographer (among her better known jobs) Suze Randall talks about Ginger and describes her as "an Olympic Athlete of Sex." Anyhow, thought this was a strong documentary. Also, like some other ADT members, saw and liked PBS's Frontline Documentary "Death of a Porn Queen" about the tragic Colleen Applegate alias pornstar Shauna Grant. Happened to have also recorded that doc. when PBS aired it in June 1987. (also recently transferred to DVD) Besides all the sadness in Death of a Porn Queen, a fascinating little tidbit it provides is showing a glimpse of Godfather director Francis Coppola, sitting at a table at the Jan 1987 AVN Awards. At that same awards ceremony, Ginger Lynn is shown accepting an award for Blame It On Ginger, while admitting to being unaware about which of the scenes in the flick won her the award. [Link] |
