It's gone now but the write-up for X-Rated sounds awesome. There's a femnist doc from the early 80s with as similar title that touches briefly on porn, overall it's a good doc that focuses more on the widespread sexism of the mainstream culture rather than just porn and so makes a much stronger argument. I've seen the Hardcore doc mentioned above and it's the best doc I've seen on the darker side of the industry, if a bit heavy handed here and there. Exhausted is a classic, very funny and a bit creepy knowing the real story behind Holmes at the time it was shot. The commentary on the DVD release is essential. I've already mentioned Kamikaze Hearts recently but can't recommend it enough, it's kind of a pseudo-doc but that's part of its meta-charm. Inside Deep Throat is terrific, balanced, emphatic and well researched. Saw Aroused recently and it was too shallow and banal although it at least took a sympathetic and mostly non-judgmental (occasionally patronizing) view of the female performers.
I personally feel annabel chong documentary is good. It was very real. As compared with others like traci lords or jenna jameson, I kinda feel they lied. Shauna grant is also good documentary. I don' t think anybody like to watch a documentary lied. Imo, a good documentary is brutally honest and raw. Not like self promoting themselves. And provides insights from the documentary.

I'll go with you on the movie "SEX: The Annabel Chong Story." Saw it at the Laemelle on Sunset back when the Virgin Music Store was across the way. I love porn, but this showed the messy side without to much demonizing of producers and directors. It allowed you to make your own judgements as well as about Annabel's background and motivation for getting in the business. The gang rape thing as a schoolgirl in the UK really drove home a dark point about what some of the actress go through that may allow them to do porn as a way of making money. Also showing her at USC and how intelligent she is also communicated that many of these ladies & men have so much on the ball even while struggling with personal demons. Its one that I would put in my "straight" film library actually. BTW, she has transitioned into the straight life quite smoothly so that CAN be done for a female actress....people like the Pink Crossers seem to think this is impossible.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a good documentary that focuses exclusively on the history of gonzo porn? Like it starts out talking about John Stagliano's work in the early nineties and then traces the evolution of the genre through the following decades. Nope. As far as I know, it does not exist. There are docs that deal with gonzo (9 to 5 Days in Porn, and (cough) Pornland), but none that address it in terms of history or genre or anything else we might hope for. A major gap that I hope someone will fill. If I am mistaken, I will be thrilled. Anyone have any leads?
Netflix has a title called "Kink" which is a behind-the-scenes look at Kink.com. I watched it last night and can recommend it to anyone interested in this kind of porn.
CAMGIRLZ was pretty good. I don't know much about that world, but the film seemed to dwell more on alternative type chicks. Can anyone confirm if the women in the documentary are representative of that world?

To me porn is its own documentary. That's why I love reality porn. It's like the climate and weather. I don't need no one to tell me about a sunny day, just to make it look grey, colouring everything in black and white.
Personally I loved the 2008 documentary '9 to 5: Days in Porn'. The director followed top performers for 2 years (Sasha Grey, Belladonna, Katja Kassin, ...), agent Mark Spiegler, producers like Jonni Darkko, ... I found it very open minded, not at all dismissive and just all-round well-made. The best porn doc I've seen so far. It's a couple of years old, but I haven't seen it mentioned here: Public Sex, Private Lives which focuses on Princess Donna, Isis Love and Lorelei Lee from Kink.com.
Now available on netflix, Respectable: The Mary Millington Story. It's nice to see British hardcore get some attention. I wasn't even sure if there was a British hardcore industry in the 1970s (and perhaps "industry" is too generous a term). I attended a talk in London about British hardcore last summer, though, and since then have been quite fascinated. I will check out this doc this weekend.

^ I watched RESPECTABLE. It has some problems in terms of narrative but the archival footage is just so wonderful. As a British person, I found some of the commentators embarrassing in their Britishness (rendering everything a passive aggressive question..."isn't it?" etc), but many here won't notice that stuff or be bothered by it. :)

Thanks GGG; I sort of reviewed it, badly I expect:- BBC (the tv station, that is) showed a rather touching documentary last night about Carly Rae, an English model, trying to further a career in porn. Called 'Jade {her real name] ; why I chose Porn', it follows three shoots in Europe and ends with her leaving for the US where an agent had organised a tour with American studios. I say touching because she is desperate for a steady relationship and the grounding that she hoped it would give her after some less than happy experienes to date, including a nasty sexual assault when she was 16; but acknowledges that this is going to be difficult given her career choice. It was kind of sad. As a person I warmed to her a great deal and ended hoping she'd find what she's looking for. The coverage of her shoots wouldn't exactly inspire any aspiring models; the first, in Spain, seemed OK; she had a co-star who seemed respectful of her (indeed she spoke of how respectful the actors in porn are in general) and she got paid £1,200 for three shots over 2 days. It included a short interview with Mischa Cross incidentally. The next two shoots weren't so encouraging. Her first for Brazzers with a very largely endowed guy left her torn and bleeding. I wonder how many times that happens to others. Not nice. The next, in Prague, left her insecure about her looks after her co-star spent 90 minutes (90??!!) trying to maintain his hard on. I have to say it was his bad not her's as she looked stunning. He looked pretty bored in general and I took an instant dislike to him, so I won't name him. Watch the programme if you want to know who he is. I hope they're nice to her in the US.

Thanks to that link I found another Channel4 porn doc on Youtube called Date My Porn Star. It is a very heavy handed and moralistic 'expose' where three unbelievably naive porn fans are exposed to the 'harsh realties' of the porn industry and realize how bad and misogynistic the industry 'really' is and how they are implicated for supporting it. Typically hypocritical trash that indulges the audience's prurient interest with lots of slyly framed sex and nudity while self righteously condemning the industry. One of the porn 'fans' is so quick to ask moralistic and judgemental questions I wonder if he was being fed lines by the producers. One fellow in a wheelchair resists 'the truth' until he is converted at the end. It is all so predictable it is truly tiresome. It is so disingenuous it reminded me of the rightly disparaged anti-porn doc Not A Love Story which also had a very phoney feeling 'conversion' storyline.
A new anti-porn documentary: Addicted to Porn: Chasing the Cardboard Butterfly. Narrated by James Hetfield of Metallica. This trailer is pretty hilarious in places (starting with that title). The only thing that gives me hope is the inclusion of David Ley.
Question for you: Do you have a preference when in comes to porn doc? Do you prefer the docs that goes behind the scenes and focuses on the porn performers and the industry or the ones that focus on porn strictly as a business and the amount of money it generates despite being frowned upon or the ones that focus on the affects of porn in society?
^ I like the first two types and really dislike the latter type. Until there are docs assessing the affects of romantic comedies and action films on society, I will always roll my eyes at those kind of porn docs. I like a fourth type, also--the biographical documentary. WRANGLER is a favourite.
Oh and I like docs that investigate a genre or era--like the one about comic books--Sex in the Comics (trailer)--which I watched on netflix recently.

I watched one from UK on TV about a week ago, it sucked, the wannbe-girl sucked, at 22 she was fronting the "Young in porn" programme, but she wasn't really in porn, she wasn't that young, she was only a stupid english girl, like so many from over there, this was 100 % lame and amateurish, she was lame and amateurish, talked like a stupid tramp that had no clue, had no fucking class at all, a Complete Waste, and the producers making it sucked, too, telling a story as if porn had to be lame and amateurish. So everything pretty much sucked, lame and amateurish bullshit thru ad thru came on TV, I'd like to be Elvis again and shoot the goddmann thing, every step of the way, misleading everyone that have no clue, which is the situation for more than 99 out of 100. Fuck peoople without a fucking clue about porn telling people without a clue about porn what they do in porn. Telling the people watching that everyone in porn sucks, and porn sucks too, Yeah you may strart believe so, dumb as they get around here, they don't know what they do, shoot a scene but the dude can't get it up, no fucking boner so fuck this interview etc. This is a crime in my book to get thru with. Just to sell in. I should like to kick them all in the ass, telling them that they suck big time, so I should also get them sentenced to waterboarding in Jules Jordan's swimming pool, and not let them go free before they admit that they're only bullshitting society because they have an agenda against porn. It doesn't need to be the majority, but believe me, after watching a dozen so and so, the majority on those TV programmes from UK, be it about obesity, young parents, alcohol, crime, sex, drugs or rock and roll, the people in them are not like the smartest this Earth has to offer. No, I do not, but if you as a viewer will base your assumption on porn nowadays by watching this fucked up programme - it should have been put to rest in its own misery point blank - instead of worsening one's insight, it's a much worse outcome this. I agree. Misrepresentation of porn is annoying. I make a point to write about it in order to dispel ignorance. Why the disparagement of English women and that performer had to come into it, I have no idea.

I remember the Ginger Lynn presentation in that shit. She was to me, still is, a very smart, wonderful piece of woman, a mankind at its best kinda wonder. In that shit she was shown as a lost bitch with an infant. I think it was a musicvideo. I couldn't really give a fuck. But everyone that didn't have a clue about Ginger Lynn, and that's pretty much almost ninetynine out of hundred, thought she was not so glamorous showing off. I never was a big fan of Metallica, though I attended one concert, they lack the orgel, and the elegance, and the brilliancy out of fingerspitzengefuhl. They're like a fucking elephant in a french glassboutiqe. Me I love Guns N' Roses, still do. In their videos, on the other hand, they have sexy women kicking ass, looking fine. They say they didn't show any respect towards woman. Fuck those perceptions. The most kick ass bomb shells showed up in their videos. Axl & Co documented lot thru what they did musically, and lyrically too. Your daddy works in porno when your mam is not around line from My Michelle still works out very fine from time, if I'm high on whisky after dinner having watched porn, Appetite is just the best recording of songs ever.
Porn is always bagged, with claims it creates unrealistic expectations, particularly among the youth. But I've always thought that when it comes to unrealistic expectations, and in whole range of areas, surely rom-coms and soapies would have a far greater affect than porn. But as you basically imply, I don't think those that present such research really actually care about unrealistic expectations.
