So I'm inspired to ask these questions after finding something new and interesting on the website of Hentaied.com Well, new to me anyway. I'm not a subscriber to their website (though I have watched a few of their scenes on Adult Empire Unlimited, which has some of their scenes), but in case you are not familiar with them, they produce mostly lesbian or solo scenes based around tentacle fetish, which requires quite a bit of special effects (some CGI, some practical) and presumably unusually high budget. It seems they have started this "crowdfunding" system to complement their existing subscription business model. After briefly looking through it, it seems to work in the following manner.

-- They source their ideas from their forum, which votes from a number of proposals, which include the basic premise of the scenes as well as candidates of the cast. The winners advance to the "funding round."

-- The site sets a funding goal and time limit. If they reach the goal within the limit, they go ahead with the production. If not, the proposal is considered to have failed, and all money is refunded.

-- Funders contribute by buying various "packages," which offers escalating benefits for higher contributions. I don't know if all proposed scenes offer the same benefits, but using one of them as an example, the benefits goes from being able to watch the scene early (the scene will still be released to all subscribers to the site), to getting some merchandise like t shirt, to getting a personalized greeting from an actress, to getting "bottle of cum from the actress' pussy" 😲😲😲, to getting an actress' panties (weird how the panties cost you more than cum), etc. The cheapest package is $30, the most expensive is $3,000.

So far, based on the existing proposals, it seems most of them are already successfully funded or are on their way to be funded (though I don't know if they list the failed ones). Most of them cost about $10,000 to $20,000 or so (the site uses euro, but euro to dollar is about 1 to 1). The number of contributors generally are below 100, so on average each contributes about $100-$300.

What do you think of this business model? I sort of like it. If you look at most producers, one of the problems I have is that 99% of their scenes are filmed in similar locations, and the plot, costume, and other aspects of productions are pretty lacking in ambition. This is understandable as a big budget production is too risky. Crowdfunding removes this risk as it pre-funds the scene to ensure it's financially viable.

Let me do some back-of-the-envelope calculations on how much this can raise for a hypothetical scene on Adult Time. I've read somewhere on this forum that they have 45,000 subscribers. For the sake of argument, let's just say 40,000 for convenience, and assume they use a similar tiered contribution system.

-- Let's be very conservative, and say just 1% decide to participate. That's 400 people.

-- Let's stay conservative, and say just 1% of that decide to pay the highest tier. That's 4 people who pay $3,000. So $12,000.

-- Assume 5% pay the next highest tier, which we'll say it's $500. So 20 * 500 = $10,000

-- Assume 14% pay the next highest tier, which we'll say it's $100. So 56 * 100 = $5,600

-- Assume 80% pay the lowest tier, which we'll say it's $30. So 320 * 30 = $9,600.

That's a total of $37,200. This is a number that's already higher than any of the funded scenes on Hentaied (which is about $25,000). And keep in mind this will come on top of whatever baseline budget they already have for each scene, so the total budget will easily blow pass $40,000, and may even approach $50,000.

To put this number in perspective, back in the mid-2010s, Girlfriends Films paid each performer $800 per scene (a rate that was considered above market). So for a two women scene, it's $1,600. How much does the rest of the production cost? I have no idea. And how has the rate changed over the last 10 years, and what about inflation? Let's just double it, and again, and again. Even under such (very likely far too high) assumptions, it's only $12,800. In other words, a crowdfunded scene can get a budget that's 3 or 4 times higher than normal. Imagine what they can do with a budget like this! And keep in mind I have used what seems to me extremely conservative assumptions in all the above.

I still haven't decided what my dream lesbian scene would be under such conditions (not big tentacles of course 😄). What do you guys think? What would you like to see in such a scene?
