| fu_q All-Star Member Marv Montag (@PornOfYore) 2506 Posts 2/09 | Posted - Nov 24 2009 : 11:37AM The way it worked was that they had various people reading parts of the book--mostly without a tremendous amount of expression (which was by design)--and they had large cloth-covered blocks of different color that they periodically rearranged to create the sets. As such, the setting had to largely be imagined, but the blocks were fairly effective at this. They also had some loud Asian-themed music that was played live by an ensemble of players. The music was good when it was used between parts of the book, etc. ... but they also often played when the readers were trying to read. This made it impossible to hear what was being read during the musical portions b/c the musicians were literally going nuts on their instruments. This was the thing that I would have changed the most--the music during the reading did not work. They had some microphone difficulties, but they seemed fairly adept at swapping out the equipment without disturbing the reading too much. Some of the readers were better than others--with Sasha and an older guy in a blue shirt (if I remember correctly) being the best. Sasha did quite well, and it was cool to see her in such a unique setting. The dress was casual--most of the readers were wearing sneakers and bluejeans. Sasha wore all black -- black pants, black zip-up sweatshirt, and dark sunglasses. Another female reader had on a gothic-style skirt. The room was fairly small, but the event was well-attended. I am guessing maybe 100(ish) seats in the tiny theater. It was funny--when Sasha came out, I noticed that a decent number of cameras came out, as well...my wife remarked on this, as well. While the NYC art scene probably isn't my cup of tea, it was cool to see Sasha in a unique environment such as this...and she did a good job and had a large role--at least for the last hour, which is the part that we saw. edit--typo Edited by - fu_q on 11/25/2009 12:39:51 AM [Link] |

At best sf writers keep up with current developments in science so they're not inspiring technology as much as bringing to the public's attention what scientists are already thinking is possible.
