I'd say that when they leave the business, the reason you don't hear much from them is they're ready to cool it and settle down and don't want to be pestered. The fact that they use stage names (Which hopefully their real names go undiscovered) allows them to pretty much disappear when they're ready to. People change a lot as they age and it takes a sharp eye to spot someone who's changed their look even a little. It's about the same as it is for some of the lesser known mainstream Hollywood stars. When they start staying out of the bright lights for a while, you don't really hear much about them unless they get in trouble or something. Most people do like to have some kind of a private life eventually.

Porn is littered with the similar stories to the so called "Shock" examples quoted in the article. To say that they are isolated incidents is completely inaccurate. One only needs search this site for about a 1/2 hour to come up with 6 or more examples not mentioned in the story. Yeah some save their cash and go onto bigger and better things, but more often than not it's quite the opposite.
Porn is a relatively small place and tends to attract a large number of troubled people who have shunned other ways of living (or have been shunned by the rest of the world). It's not necessarily the business so much as it is the fact that the requirements for employment in the industry are so basic that anyone who is attractive and willing to have sex on camera for money can do it. Of course you're going to see people whose lives were and always will be a train wreck when the criteria for acceptance into the business are that unconstrained. And again, it's not so much the business as it is the fact that some people are just plain bad at managing their lives. A good number of the "horror stories" you hear would probably play out in a similar fashion no matter what these people tried to do with themselves. Real life is littered with such stories but no one really points them out and never lets anyone forget because it's not sex. That's the moronic truth about it. Some people are so goddamned desperate to vilify the porn industry that they'd use an example of a porn star getting hit by a car crossing the street against it if they could (And probably have). The world outside porn has a dark underbelly filled with desperate, frightened and lost people who don't know what to do with themselves too that a lot of people never see. Is that really any kind of commentary on the world we live in or just an unfortunate fact of life and all of it's warts, wrinkles and flaws? Is it a shame when someone lives their whole life working at places like Wal Mart or doing secretary work and never does anything more significant than just getting by? Maybe they don't necessarily end up in rehab but are they really any better off when they have to beg and borrow money to do basic things like put tires on their cars or keep their electricity on another month? So again. Why do people behave as though this is something extraordinary that never happens in any other walk of life? In the end, it IS just because it's porn and people's prejudices against it, the people who make it, the people who sell it and the people who enjoy it. The ugly word and the naked truth. Some people are just looking to justify their prejudices any way they can (Because obviously, you need an excuse). In all of the shit jobs I ever worked with bosses and clients who treated me like garbage and all the crap I went through, nobody ever gave a fuck and if I'd have ended up in a ditch somewhere, you'd never have heard a thing about it. Why? I guess nobody cares unless you're a pretty young thing who chose to fuck for a living. Edited by - randomprecision on 8/4/2010 1:14:27 AM
Here's a youtube video about life after porn. At 7:08 in the video, porn legend Christy Canyon says she would discourage her kids from doing porn. I wish the interviewer would have asked her to elaborate. I don't know what to think about her statement (Jenna has said the same in interviews). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_tFBs6Rjlg
Personally, I try to be objective about porn, because it does have a good side and a bad side, and there are biased ppl who only want to vilify it. But as for Christy's comments, maybe it's natural to want your child to get into a profession that has retirement plan and no STD risks.

^besides that, there is no real money in it, these days.
I know doctors and lawyers who say they don't want their kids doing their jobs. I doubt most factory workers are enthusiastic about their kids following in their footsteps. I think there are good reasons a porn-parent wouldn't want their kids doing porn, but they aren't alone. If you want to find out why porn stars retire, some answers are in Katja Kassin's retirement post. She made it pretty clear that she didn't regret what she had done, but it was also a career that came with a lot of hassle and she wanted to move on to a new phase of her life. I expect a lot of stars feel similarly. It isn't that they necessarily feel bad about having done porn, but they feel life outside it is easier in some ways and has opportunities they can't pursue as a porn star. As for what they do afterwards ... if you accept that they find life outside porn easier, it follows that they don't want to be known as an ex porn star. The connection is more hassle. So they wander off and become dental assistants and real estate agents and taxi drivers and hairdressers and nurses and patissiers and farmers' wives and farmers and who-knows-what. But we don't find out about many success stories because part of what defines many of them as success stories is being anonymous.
When did Sasha Grey retire? I know she's slowed down quite a bit on the porn front, but I don't recall reading about her leaving sex performing. She always stated that she had no intention of quitting hardcore even if she succeeded at mainstream. I hope she still thinks that way.

She is, but it's her porn connection that got her that gig.

You're preaching to the choir here. I just find it amusing that people try to make porn something more than what it is, porn. As an example, a couple of quotes above from posters almost shocked Jenna or Christy don't want their kids doing porn. Read Christy's book and you'll find that during most of her "star" days, she was on drugs and needed drugs to complete her scenes. I remember reading a quote long ago from someone who did a few porn movies when they were still movies and when asked why the she stopped, she said, "I found myself getting paid to fuck guys that I would never even consider fucking in real life, so when I realized I was little more than a whore, I quit."
One of the ones I wonder about is Paige Turner. Such a cute girl next door look, and nobody could forget that face. I think she was only active in 2004-2005, but she did pretty much everything, anal, IR, gangbangs, etc. Toward the end, I guess, she did an MDD (301) and in the interview told Ed she had a new boyfriend, EMS guy, and she looked sort of sad. Ed pushed and she teared up and said she really regretted some of the scenes she did. I can imagine there was a lot to get thru in that relationship if it held up.
Isn't she the girl that ended one gangbang by saying "hi" to an ex-boyfriend and that she didn't love him anymore? That's kinda fucked up. Porn as revenge never is a good idea.
I do remember that somewhat similar looking Larrisa Fox said something like that to the camera at the end of her TT Boy scene in 18 n nasty 40. Nice, huh? Think he could have had a comeback?
I'm sure there are people who feel that way in other professions, but it's frequent to have multi-generational families in common work industries, but it's a rarity with porn performers.

I believe I met her at a AEE a few years ago. She was at the Anabolic table signing her page in their calender. What struck me as odd ws the shots the Anabolic used in the calender. Most of the girls had very nice hardcore shots that were flattering to their careers/looks etc. Paige's shot was of her wearing one of those dog cones and she had the jizz of a least 6 guys all over her face. One look at the shot and the expression on her face, one could easily tell that she was not having a good time at that shoot. I always thought it was kind of a douchebag move on the part of Anabolic to use that shot compared to the other calender shots.

That was Kacey, if I'm correct. But Paige Turner fucked almost every black dude in the biz on her own internet site as Katie Thomas. No more white guys, just black guys. Guess she was really into black guys. Nothing really hardcore as DTH14 or the Diabolic stuff, but good IR stuff.
Anabolic have been making douchebag moves since they started. I admit I've enjoyed several of their movies (or at least parts of those movies) but I've disliked as many because of the nasty attitude they show towards women. Basically, they love saying "Ha ha! We humiliated you and you don't even know it! Dumb whore!" - and making that part of their promotion.

It really was a douchebag move and she must have pissed them off royally. All the other shots were great in the calender and showcased the girls quite nicely, but Paige's face had a look of utter disgust on it. I felt a little pervy asking a "still with braces on Kat" to sign a shot of her in RCA with another huge cock in her face whle she her smiled with braces showing for the camera.
Just disturbing, i wish all women would have the same limits. Just like the humiliation porn genre like ghetto gaggers, that's a negative part in the industry.
The middle class is disappearing. A large part of porn will be dirt poor women seeking rich husbands. The 99.9% who don't get married will go back to the labor camps and homeless shelters.
It was '05. She was a good sport about it, and joked about expecting to sign that picture a couple hundred times. She signed mine, "Wishing for better pictures"

Should work. I have no idea why they don't. So try these: http://media.julesjordanvideo.com/julesjordanvideo.com/galleries/2/355/012.jpg http://media.julesjordanvideo.com/julesjordanvideo.com/galleries/2/355/011.jpg
I don't think that is Paige Turner. doesn't look like her face, and note "A" tat on ribs. There is also a different PT that does BDSM. But the katiethomas site is her. Anyone know how recent that is? I'd be thrilled if there was PT stuff after 2005 that wasn't comps...
wow, I am so happy for Claire. I just started college myself. I qualified for the honor's program because I top scored on my English test. Summer classes are already over for me and I think I got an A on my math class. I am also teaching English as a second language now. It's not that easy to find your way back into real life. It's been almost a year now and I am doing fine. To me my porn career just feels like a weird dream I had, seems so distant and unreal.
Katja - it makes me happy that you are doing well. :)

Just Google yourself anytime you want a reminder that your porn career was very real. Anyhow, I have no clue exactly what happens to porn actors/actresses when they retire. I do have an analytical mind and I do find it hard to believe that the majority are enrolling in college and progressing into professional careers (especially if they had notable porn careers). Comments like "dozens of ex porn stars are in law school on the east coast" are empty and devoid of any substance. Even if they are true, it doesn't mean they graduated or will actually get jobs as lawyers. Moreover, law schools always ask for resumes as a part of the the application process; you're telling me these girls are getting accepted after divulging that they've been doing porn for who knows how long before. Maybe, but I doubt. I mean how are you going to tie being a porn star in with being a lawyer when they ask why you want to be a lawyer, why now, what have you been doing since you graduated that made you want to be a lawyer. I suppose you could tie in defending freedom of speech or something, but I don't buy it. Anyway, even if dozens of girls do become some type of professional, they are likely the outliers. I suspect the vast majority of ex porn get less than plum job and struggle (like most people) unless they can parlay their pornstar status into some kind of business. I could be wrong. But when I do attempt to make an objective inference, it just doesn't seem likely that these folks are waltzing into tier one universities and professional careers considering the competitiveness of the environments.
