I agree. I think some people complain just to complain. Even if a scene was 99% close to perfect (bc nothing is 100% perfect) people will still find something to complain about. A scene is too short. A scene is too long. The use of toys. Not enough use of toys. Too long at a certain position. Not long enough in a certain position. Dont like how a girl look. So many complaints. And its one thing to not be too high on a scene bc it didnt hit some of your kinks. Its another thing to complain about a scene in general. Case in point. There was GFF scene that had no tribbing. Back in the day you had to be larger than life to be considered a believable champion. A mega star. Instead of being on set where you got this big studio, shooting with someone that you just met that day with a director a camera crew and doing things you would never do in your normal life. You are in the comfort on your own home, in a normal environment, you dont have heavy makeup if not any makeup, you arent dressed in luxury clothes, and you are having sex with a close friend youve known for x amount of years that yall know each other very well if not you are shooting with a girl you are dating ala Lena Paul and Ivy Lebelle at one point. So you turn on the camera have amazing normal sex where you dont have to open up for the camera with angles or none of that stuff and you just film it. Its not performative based and the fans love it bc its natural and real. Real emotions, real orgasms, etc...

Now does that not move some if not alot of people? Yes. There are people who want the theatrics of a studio based scene and as long as it look real thats all that matters even if the girl herself says she didnt have an orgasm that scene and was never comfortable. The fans will still enjoy the scene bc it looked good. So amateur scenes arent some people thing. Plus it can be expensive. I prefer great chemistry. And then there are other factors at play like hoping the director dont ruin the scene by doing too much with the performers. So yeah thats just my thinking. And the more I watch scenes the more I lean towards amateur content over studio. As far as OF/fansite clips, when that first took off, it seemed like it was mostly just people fucking around but with a cell phone or halfway decent camcorder running. Remember, it is a yoga-themed series so they are really doing it right by having the actresses in various positions, yoga outfits, etc. to make the theme as authentic as possible. Having all of the movies in this series in my collection, #5 is the very best of them all and #6 looks like it's as good as #5 so I hope Addicted 2 Girls keeps making them like these last two. 1. I certainly do not count myself as one of those who want to revitalize the genre. It is plenty vital today. I have seen no evidence that it's declining significantly in either quality or quantity.

2. The criticism from some lesbian and bisexual women about the lack of realism as the central problem, as I stated earlier, are either disingenuous (they either don't like porn as a matter of principle, or resent the fact that lesbian porn is about men paying for such performances for sexual satisfaction), or have highly problematic implications. 3. Should people like Bree and Freya be involved in creating more content? Sure. I enjoy a lot of thoughtful content presented by Bree Mills, and it's a shame that she's mostly producing rather than writing or directing. Freya Parker is one of the best performers currently active, so of course I'd like to see more scenes from her. But there are still two things to keep in mind.

3.1. One is that these are still paid performances. From Mills, it literally involves script writing and directing; from Parker (and any other performers), it means performances.

3.2. I would be very wary of imposing some sort of identity requirement, whereby only those who publicly self-identify as lesbian or bisexual can get a say on how to create content. For one thing, again I emphasize what we see is performance. It's work. If someone does not want to public identify as lesbian or bisexual for WHATEVER reason, that's their business. People should not be discriminated in their work based on their sexual identity. Second, if, let's say, in an extreme scenario, where someone opens a studio dedicated to lesbian porn and announces only lesbian or bisexual women would be hired to direct or perform in scenes, what do you think will actually happen? All applicants will say they are lesbians or bisexuals. Because, you know, money.

2. It's worthwhile to make a distinction between two terms that both of us have thrown around: realism and authenticity. Here's how I'd like to define them.

2.1. Realism: how close does what we see resemble real life with real people?
2.2. Authenticity: how much does what we see stem from the thoughts and designs of the performers themselves (as opposed to directors, producers, etc.)?

3. Realism can be good, but it also can be highly problematic as I argued repeatedly (overweight Americans playing superbowl, report-filing cop shows, masculine women using sex toys on lesbian porn). Just because something is realistic, it doesn't mean it's good entertainment (very often it's the opposite).

4. Authenticity is also a double-edged sword.
4.1. A potentially very good thing is, as you repeatedly point out in different terms, good chemistry between performers. If they (or a knowledgeable director) get to choose who they want to work with, all else being equal, it's much more likely to be a good scene than performing with a total stranger. I regard the relative lack of such opportunities in studio work as regrettable, and would certainly like to see more.
4.2. But even here things are not so simple.
4.2.1. Suppose the performers actually don't like kissing? Or really enjoy using toys? I like watching kissing. I don't like watching toy use (in general). So this would not appeal to me.
4.2.2. If it's all down to the performers, they would be very pinched for resources. There would be probably very few story based scenes, and I like story based scenes if done well (granted there are not that many). Just to use two examples that come to mind, there's a scene between Casey Calvert and Whitney Wright on Adult Time that had a long and emotional soliloquy by Casey's character at the beginning that I thought added a lot to the character. There's a duology called A Love Story starring Bella Roland on All Her Luv that I enjoyed a lot, which has a very touching romantic story (actual two, first tragic, second happy) that I really like. Is it realistic to expect the two performers to also be good script writers?
4.2.3. If you involve script writers (and directors, and camera crew, and sound engineer, etc.), you can potentially get a very different and interesting and good scene, but also the scene must by definition become less authentic, as it will have to incorporate and accommodate other people's (in addition to the performers) thoughts and designs.
4.2.4. Another complication of "picking your partner" is that this potentially restricts new entrants. A new performer who knows very few others will almost certainly get far fewer opportunities in such authentic scenes. Just to use one example: I have discovered five women who released their first scenes in just 2022 and I like a lot -- Chanel Camryn, Dharma Jones, Melissa Stratton, Queenie Sateen, Scarlett Alexis. I don't know what your opinion on them is, but it's not a surprise few of them came up in the names you cited.

5. Lastly, let me just say again what we see on screen is always performance, always work. I have no inherent objection whatsoever to OF content, except many of them are far too expensive. Which tells you something doesn't it (other than my limited budget)? Such videos, no matter how authentic, are for SALE.
5.1. Originally I wrote that when people know that they are being recorded and the recording will be watched by thousands, this will necessarily change how they behave. I stand by that.
5.2. But in fact it's far worse than this. There's a direct, clear profit motive. The video will not just be "watched," it will be for SALE. The people in the video know very well how much profit they make (if any at all) depends on what they do, how they do it, for how long they do it, with whom they do it. Again, am I really supposed to believe the resulting video will be no different than a video that comes from a hidden camera recording their personal, private lives? They can make a perfectly authentic video (as I previously defined the term), but it's in no way realistic (as I previously defined the term).
5.3. The impact of the profit motive cannot help but be overwhelming on behavior. To use an analogy, this is like asking a salesman how good the product he tries to sell is, when he's compensated purely on commission. What do you think he will say? How could anyone expect him to say otherwise?

I feel the same way you do. I do feel like at least on here bc on platforms like twitter I dont see people complaining about the downfall of the G/G genre. For me I can clearly see its not the same as it once was but its not crap. I love the creativity there is now than back then. I also love the performers themselves have more freedom than they did back then.

I do think there's something to be said about how men and women may look for different things in porn. However, speaking as a fan of lesbian porn, what matters, in terms of audience, is not lesbian or bisexual women (because there are too few of them to make a commercial impact), but straight women. As I've argued repeatedly elsewhere, based on what scattered evidence we have, even though a majority of paying audience for lesbian porn are men, a majority of non-paying audience for lesbian porn (who hang out on places like pornhub and out-number the paying ones by a factor of 100 to 1000) are women, the vast majority of whom are certainly straight. If there's some way to convert more of them to paying audience, I would certainly welcome it.

Just this very week, medical reports were released showing that 83% of tattoo ink contains chemicals that are extremely toxic.

Of course, everyone has a right to choose what they do with their appearance but just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should. Of course these actresses have the right to be themselves, however when you work in an industry where you are judged first/mainly by looks, having excessive tattoos is going to be a big turn off to a majority of mainstream viewers; that's a fact that has been proven time and time again for decades now. Take tongue, nipple and clitoris piercings, which were much more common about 10-15 years ago with many actresses doing that but today, you don't see it anywhere near as much as you used to, especially pierced tongues.

What would be wrong with waiting until AFTER actresses retire to get tattooed, pierced, etc? Or perhaps not go behind the camera at all if you want to cover your body in tattoos? Those are options too, right? Could you imagine if the majority of Hollywood A-List actors/actresses were sporting arm sleeve tattoos for example; how about Margot Robbie doing the Barbie movie with a Mike Tyson style face tattoo?

The problem is, for those who do not enjoy seeing excessively tattooed actresses in adult scenes, there are far too many scenes featuring those actresses now. Since excessive tattooing is still not popular with the majority of porn viewers, this will ultimately impact the bottom line of studios who feature them negatively sooner or later.

Again, I know of no actress who ever improved on her natural beauty by getting tattooed or pierced. One thing's for sure, delaying getting her nipples pierced certainly didn't hurt Abigail Mac's career, now did it?

Now it's the industry and agency problem. Not just with tattoos and piercings but girls looks in general. Kendra Spade told the story how when she first talked with Mark Speigler he told her she need to lose weight bc she was fat. Now mind you Kendra wasn't fat but she was so conscious about her weight that she stopped eating due to I think depression over that comment which then she got really skinny as a result. That certainly wasn't healthy for her. So like it's not about how a girl look bc in the industry it's all about variety. There are so many categories and so many different types of females that we as individuals love to see. And studios really need to start embracing that more rather than discouraging that. So do us fans.

So that's what I'm saying. Abi shouldn't have had to wait till she stopped shooting mainstream to pierce her nipples. Jelens shouldn't have had to waited till she stopped shooting mainstream to fully embrace who she is. Kristen Scott who is a fantastic performer can't get mainstream bookings bc she fully embraced who she is. That's unacceptable imo. That needs to change.

Agents tell actresses not to get ink because it limits their scene work options if they do. Actresses choose whether or not to ink up knowing that the more ink, the more potential of their scene work being limited, meaning less money. Actresses like Abigail and Jelena made a conscious decision to not change their bodies so that their ability to get scene work would not potentially be negatively affected. They assessed the situation and decided to keep themselves more marketable than not. If you or I choose to get a face tattoo and then want to get a job in a corporate environment, chances are that we would not be hired, just a reality for working in that industry.

If the majority of porn viewers craved scenes with actresses sporting excessive tattoos and/or piercings and studios paid top dollar for these actresses, you can be sure that agents would strongly encourage actresses do that and most all actresses would look like Bonnie Rotten, simple as that.

But a girl shouldn't have to worry about how they want to look based on opportunities in the industry. A great scene is a great scene no matter who the girl is. Just like a great performer doesn't always have to mean she is doing anal or dp or any other type of big type of scene. Again let the performers just be themselves.

This industry is not like a regular 9-5 job. If it was if it was of course nobody would show up covered in tattoos or body piercings. This job is unique that comes in all different shapes, sizes, personalities and it shows from the looks. And many of these performers got into the industry bc they were bored of their 9-5 normal job where they had to follow a typical protocol.

Actually, there are two cases where agents forced adult actresses to retire. One is Jenna Sativa, that was told that she looked too fat just because she had some weight. The other is Jayden Cole, who was booked in many scenes by her agent without her knowledge. Sativa is retired while Cole has decreased her mainstream work. Probably, not the only cases and definitely not even the worst, but two good examples.

And yes performers can/should be themselves, to a point, unless you are your own boss, make and post your own content, which many do now, you can be yourself. If however you choose to work in the mainstream, there are limits, whether it's 9 to 5 or not, there are always limits.

One of those limits is having a certain type of appearance in order to do adult scenes. Are there as many BBW or Granny-themed monthly scene releases as there are lesbian releases or interracial releases or bondage releases? Why? Because BBW & Granny scenes are not anywhere near as popular with viewers as those other categories. While there are those who enjoy watching them, they are not mainstream, it's just a fact and there isn't as large enough of an audience for those genres as there are for others. So while BBW and Granny women can be themselves doing these scenes, it's only for a small, select audience.

In mainstream, whether it's right or not, in order to be mainstream, you have to look and act in a certain way in order to fit into that mainstream category. Sporting excessive tattoos/piercings is not mainstream as it is structured today even though you are seeing it more and more lately. Perhaps excessing tattoos and/or multiple piercings one day will be mainstream but not yet as actresses without ink/piercings are still more sought after as they have been for decades.

Actresses can/do easily create and distribute their own content now and can choose to look anyway they want to, working any hours they wish, and can be themselves. For mainstream/studios, there's more structure because there needs to be in order to create content with larger budgets, series features, etc. that appeal to the mainstream audiences that prefer seeing their content with, for example, actresses that are not excessively tattooed.

Adriana Chechik, Alex Coal, Cadence Lux, Abigail Mac (only had 1 tattoo while doing feature work, hidden by her hair on the back of her neck) are examples of industry superstars who either aren't excessively tattooed or have no tattoos at all. Their looks helped make them the stars they are. If they had decided to instead sport full body paint while shooting scenes, or had half/all their bodies tattooed, or wore a bunny costume during shoots, would they have been just as successful in the name of just being themselves?

Want to look anyway you want & do anything you want, then make your own content and those who want to watch you, will watch. Want to appeal to a wider audience with more exposure and more scene work opportunities, then sport a look that appeals to that mainstream audience you want to do content for. This applies for most all professions in life, the adult industry is no different.
