I would say in general the good scenes, in those days, were to be found among "all girl" features. These "mixed in" g/g scenes in mostly straight movies were typically not very good. As for the short duration, yeah that was just the standard in those days, 10 to 15 minutes. Starting in the 2000s, this got doubled (if not more) -- for reasons that I'm still not clear about. I would say g/g scenes benefited enormously from this change, as this allowed a lot more sexy foreplay (pity the guys in straight scenes though, as they now had to maintain erections for medically dangerous long time).
Here's a very interesting feature on IAFD that people may not be aware of, called "Performer Rarities." It's the second from bottom item on the "Advanced Search" page. Basically it gives you a list of performers who have done very few scenes of a particular type. It seems they have recently improved this feature -- it used to display just the first 100 people alphabetically, so we end with a list of names that all start with "A." Now it includes everyone.
Anyway, of interest to this thread, you can search for "Lez Only," as in, who have done the fewest lesbian scenes in their career, in terms of percentage of all their scenes. There may be a minimum scene requirement to be included in the list, but it's not clear what it is (if it exists).
Here are the "top 5" in terms of the lowest percentages of g/g only scenes.
I don't know any of these ladies. Milena seems to be a Brazilian. Susan and Desiree seem to be from the 80s. Babs seems to have her own production that specializes in cuckold stuff. The only arguably contemporary, mainstream performer is Millian Blu, who seems to have done some scenes in the late 2000s for studios such as Evil Angel.

^Courtney may not have been known primarily for g/g but I always feel obliged to point out that she _directed_ one of the great g/g series ever, the 'Pussy Cats' line of circa 2007/08 on zero tolerance. Those movies were fairly watershed moments in enlightened g/g presentation, big steps forward in capturing hotness on film in nonidiotic ways. I subscribed to Courtney's OF expressly to thank her for the movies - she was very nice and I'm convinced she really did direct them.

If you are saying the quality of sexual performances in lesbian content is down, I have come to understand why this might be the case. From the discussions I have seen on forums like this and the comments from members on websites, the sexual performance in a porn shoot generally does not matter/is not valued. This era of porn is more about hitting the keywords in the script, and hitting those buzzwords is what makes the video "hot" or not.

Serene is excellent. I love her work and her performances are very good. Maybe too much typecast in the role of stepmother, but still, I appreciate her work. But it's not the only one out there. You also have Sinn Sage, Jayden Cole and Charlotte Stokely, although Serene is the only GG performer that remains active. The other three only make mainstream work from time to time and are more devoted to their own channels.
Serene is OK, a little over the top for my taste, but OK. The fact that there are so few GG only mainstream women right now is not good. These GG only women have really been the backbone of GG for the last 20 years. Jenna Sativa, Prinzzess, Georgia Jones, Shyla Jennings, etc. were so great and you always knew you were going to get a good effort from them no matter who they were paired with which is a big problem right now IMO.
That being said someone like Freya Parker is as good or better at GG than many of those I just listed and she is not strictly GG so it is possible
I would argue that there are not as many really, really good GG performers as about 10-12 years ago and there is not the depth of just OK performers either mostly because of less studio work and also more women doing there own thing mainly.
But I also think that the deeper we get into the age of porn being so easily accessed the less number of authentic and natural acting GG performers we are going to see.
It feels like so many women starting in the current times are not as much trying to have real authentic sex on camera but are instead having 'porn sex' with all the overdramatic reactions that have been stereotypically thought of as porn sex and IMO that is because they have been exposed to porn sex from much younger ages than past generations. For example, if a scene is a threesome, then chances are even good performers will not be able do well, as the action gets very messy.
2. Looks. Of course this is highly subjective. Pornstars are already more beautiful than the average person, so keep in mind here I'm differentiating between the merely gorgeous and and the mindblowing.
3. Intangibles. This is a sort of "catch all" category that can include a bunch of different things. I'll explain what I mean in each case.

The thing is, trying to have real sex may be a waste of time/energy. Somebody basically just said every performer who does GG porn is good at pleasing women, meaning the ones who do put in effort in trying to please and physically connect probably do not even get recognized for their efforts. Couple that with the probability that the few performers who do show a little "both ways" in their sexuality most often face reluctance from their co-stars, and it's probably not even worth it to try to go for realism.
It's also pretty likely that the majority of the audience prefers when the performers do not enjoy the sex. This truth was revealed to me when a producer/site owner said in the comments that he likes it when a performer doesn't enjoy women but does the shoot anyway.
So the current state of GG is pretty much the result of audience disinterest in female pleasure (which tracks with the "male loneliness crisis") and therefore good performances not even being recognized, studio preference for overt fakeness and at least in some cases outright revulsion, and another super huge factor....those who enjoy women's bodies and could do GG exclusively can't do it frequently because there is not enough money in it. And even if they could, the audience and producers prefer when the women look uncomfortable, so it would be counterintuitive.
The current-day porn culture is not conducive to engaged F/F sex content. People want their almost contactless, physically-distanced vocal fry orgasms and non-consent themed SEO title skits and that's about it. It's so whack.
A user and writer on some of the various MetArt sites posed a theory about the importance of "performative bisexuality" for the bulk of the viewing audience that I think is true. They basically said that the typical GG viewer wants to see women do stuff with women but doesn't want them to appear to like it too much, lest they appear to be not so interested in dick and disrupt the fantasy that they would go for the viewer. For me, that explained a lot about how performers are taught to act in modern GG.

Wow, man, that's great work! You're a pro at that. I totally agree with you on everything, but I think Chloe Surreal and Rachel Cavallie should be at least on the honorable mention list. They didn't have a lot of scenes, but they are so good. And Kenzie Taylor deserves to be with the AA performance, and look, she is a solid choice, of course.
Great work and excellent selection of actresses. I think you have covered the entire spectrum of the GG panorama in this year. Of course, I would make some changes. Some time earlier we were talking about how in the 90s a lot of g/g scenes were released as part of mostly straight movies. Well, it seems Adam & Eve has never stopped. In May 2024 they released a two part movie called "Ulterior Motive," starring Evelyn Claire (among others). It seems there are two g/g scenes, one for each part.
I will post a two part review, one for each of the g/g scene. The first one is between Evelyn and Lumi Ray.
We start with some exposition for the plot. Since I'm only watching this scene of the movie, it's a bit confusing, but it looks like some pretty serious effort is put into this, with what seems to be some version of classic film noir (perhaps "Double Indemnity"). Oh yeah, the directing part is just a few minutes, and then shut it down. There's a lot of talking, and I don't know if she's a part of it or just sits behind the camera. The cameraman was so bad; it's not a good movie at all.
And I will review two scenes for Rachel and two for Kenzie and one for Chloe in the next few weeks.

Great review! I didn't know Evelyn is still filming. She is so beautiful and has her own style; she is different somehow. I hope she returns again.
WOW. I didnt expect so many answers and so rich as well. My point was that we have only one (my opinion of course) AAA only GG porstar these days (years), compare to 10-15 years ago where we had much more. Of course, now also we have many pornstars who are awesome with girls - Alex Coal, Kenna James, Freya Parker, Brandi Love, Valentina Nappi, Reagan Foxx, Syren De Mer etc...but they are also BG performers. Now find and have only GG pornstar on the level like Serene Siren is (or Jayden Cole, Charlotte Stokely if they are working for companies) is like to have a unicorn.
