The discussion about "realism" in lesbian porn -- in the sense of how similar (or different) relative to how actual lesbians have sex in real life -- is a longstanding one. One the one hand, it doesn't really matter that much, as we will all continue like what we like regardless of how "realistic" it is. On the other hand, it is an interesting topic, in that I would guess just about all of us, at one point or another, have expressed approval or disapproval of something that we've watched because we think it's more or less "realistic."

So how do real lesbians have sex? I have tried to search for data from academic sources. As you might have expected, data is very sparse and uneven, with only four seemingly relatively-high quality survey studies. The TLDR version of this:

1. As I expected, oral sex and fingering are by far the most popular activities, with around 80-90% of women using these methods, with fingering somewhat more popular.

2. The popularity of sex toy use is uncertain. But it seems to have a lower boundary of about 20%, but most likely around 50-60%.

3. I have always assumed tribbing is mostly a porn activity. However, its real-life popularity may be as high as 50%.

Below are the four studies. I will discuss them in two posts, and an additional post on some of my thoughts.

1. Sexual behaviour of lesbians and bisexual women by Bailey et al., 2003. This was a survey conducted by researchers from King's College London in 1992-1995. The survey population was 1,218 women, 2/3 of from patients at two lesbian sexual health clinics, and 1/3 from community members. So the big problems for this survey are that it's 30 years old, the data is gathered based on voluntary response to surveys, and it's limited to a London, UK population. The good thing is the relatively large sample size. Keeping those in mind, here are the results:

Looking at the "Often" column, oral sex and fingering are the most popular at around 80%, and tribbing (presumably that's what "Genital-genital contact" means) is a shockingly high (to me anyway) 50%!

This survey's question on sex toy is a little problematic. It asks about vaginal and anal "penetration" with sex toys. Even adding them together (these are not mutually exclusive so technically they should not be added) the sum is only 20%. But what if it's a vibrator and is not used for penetration? So best guess is toy use for penetrative purpose is around 10-20%, with (uncertain) higher overall use.

2. Sexual Norms for Lesbian and Bisexual Women by Hiromi Fujii, 2017. This researcher is from Kobe City College of Nursing. The survey was conducted by questionnaire to women who attended three "women-only social events that encourage lesbian participation" (not sure what these are, a Japanese thing?) at Kyoto, Sapporo, and Tokyo in Japan in 2008-2009. So this survey is newer at around 15 years old, but otherwise share the same weaknesses as the London survey. It also suffers from the problem of very small sample size at just of 92 women.

Again, fingering and oral sex are by far the most popular at around 80-90%. Tribbing and sex toy use are both at about 45%.

Fingering is nearly universal at 93.4%, with oral a little behind at 78.2%. Toy use seems to be about 50%, with "external" use most popular, so likely vibrators. Unfortunately this survey does not ask about tribbing.

4. Women's Vibrator Use in Sexual Partnerships by Herbenick et al., 2014. These are researchers from Indiana University and The Kinsey Institute, among others. The data is from survey conducted in 2008. As the title suggests, this one is unfortunately limited to just toy use and is not limited to just lesbians. However, it's also the only US based study that I can find, and it's in fact very high quality. This is because the survey was done by phone calls with random digit dialing, and the results are further adjusted based on US Census Bureau data - this is essentially the same methods as those surveys you see from Pew or Gallup. The relevant result is here.

Among lesbians, 65.8% have used vibrator during sex with their partners, though only 6.6% have done so during the past month. For dildo use, it's not clear if this is with partner, the percentage are 57.4% and 26.7% respectively.

Among bisexual women, vibrator use is 57.5%, with 27.1% having done so in the past month. For dildos, it's 62.4% and 29.2%.

The one limitation of this otherwise high quality survey is the small number of lesbians and bisexuals at just 107 among the total sample of 2056 (incidentally, this is about 5% which more or less matches what other surveys say about the percentage of lesbian and bisexuals among all women). This produces a relatively large margin of error, about +/- 4-5% or so. In other words, when the survey says 65.8% of lesbians have ever used a vibrator with their partner during sex, the real percentage may be anywhere from 60-70%.

To name a few of fingering experts (those who excel and do this very often) that come to my mind: Aislin, Aidra Fox, Freya Parker. I have seen some others who do it very well but do so rarely, like Lilly Bell and Gianna Dior.

When it comes to fingering, Slayed is arguably the most "realistic" in this respect as most of their scenes feature a lot of fingering (both Lilly and Gianna's fingering scenes are from Slayed). It seems the de-emphasis of fingering is really a directorial decision.

2. The use of sex toy may be up to 50-60% among actual lesbians. For porn, there seems to be a split-personality here. Among the "specialist" studios (Viv Thomas, Sex Art, Girlsway, GFF, All Her Luv etc.) that focus on g/g porn, they are very rare. This is likely pretty unrealistic. For the non-specialists that primarily produce b/g content (Wicked, Brazzers, Reality King, etc.), toy use seems far more popular. As much as their content may be criticized for low quality for other reasons, at least here they may be considered relatively more realistic.

3. Tribbing's popularity in porn is uneven. They range from nearly universal (All Her Luv) to almost never (most European productions). Considering how often they are not done well (at least imo), I have always thought this was a "circus act" that's just for porn audience. Yet in reality this could be pretty popular among real lesbian women, though the evidence is based on relatively low quality surveys.

The scene involves two well known performers in the GG genre, Serene Siren and Freya Parker. Both do a great job and it feels pretty obvious that really enjoyed working together. Serene Siren is an actress whose performances I'm starting to appreciate more and is very admirable that being only a lesbian performer she's enduring so much and Freya Parker is one of the younger talent that I consider of the best in these kind of scenes. Again, the two are fantastic and very into each other. There is a moment in the last minutes where Freya asks Seren if they can do a little more. It's was really lovable.

My only complain is that the scene feels to be more short than it should. There are many moments, but the most obvious is in the final part, where Freya sits over the face of Serene and they cut to another scene in the same situation, but then just stops after that. It's a little dissapointing, leaving you wanting to see more of action. Out of that, I think it was a good scene and both women were amazing in their roles.

Now I don't consider this my favorite porn scene by any stretch, but most would argue that Freya Parker and Serene Siren are two of the individuals who routinely produce good-looking female-female sex videos, and we can call the scene they have done together competent at the very worst. They engaged and ate pussy and interacted in ways that more or less conveyed people who might be interested in sex together. Contrast that professional-at-worst video with the new Adulttime scene released last night.
