If you don't know a computer geek, you have probably never heard of it. Linux is not a good example because most people don't know how to use it.

Linux/Ubuntu have always struggled to get people to use their software, given the issue of ease of use. Because MS OS's are just easier to use for the average person. And also most people don't know about Linux or Ubuntu. So it's not about filesharing. As for the other software, it's the same general issue with the public using MS Office because in many cases it comes installed by default on many systems. So people would have to ask specifically for OpenOffice, which many don't, since they don't know about it. As for the argument about AV software, I believe most people use AVG because it's given freely by the company, but also because it's better in many cases to Kaspersky. And comparing software, which is used for a long period of time to adult content which usually isn't, isn't the best comparison. A more apt comparison would be to compare the adult industry to the music industry. And in the case of the music industry the iTunes business model has helped to increase profits. So one can effectively compete with free by offering convenience in the accessing of content and timeliness in the release of content (i.e., the content is available for download on the day it's available for purchase by mail). MS office, when pre-installed, is usually a 30/90 day trial. "comparing software...isn't the best comparison" - i disagree. software apps are a real world test for the "business model" theorists because they possess all of the "upside" qualities: downloadable content for user convenience, available FREE, and good quality. "the itunes business model" - is a red herring. as i've pointed out before, itunes requires a separate proprietary hardware player (ipod, iphone) which created revenue in many cases equal to that of the content. also, people like to point to itunes but always seem to omit that itunes has a form of DRM attached.
I don't think either of these assertions is true. Doesn't iTunes currently use the AAC format which is supported by many platforms. They used have DRM when I had the iTunes software installed on my PC years ago, but even then it was possible to play the music on the PC and burn it to CD (and then convert it to other formats if desired even though the quality of the original downloads might have rendered the last step futile). I don't think I bought more than a handful of tracks from there, and unfortunately they became unplayable (except the ones burned on CD) when I upgraded my PC and did not bother to install the software. iTunes used to have DRM when I was using it which is one reason why I never warmed to it that much. (Another reason is that they require you to install the iTunes software which is available only for Macs and Windows machines, so Linux users need not apply.) My understanding is that more recently they have dropped the DRM and improved the quality (raised the bitrate) of the AAC files. This is based on what I have read, I don't currently have the software installed. Also most other downloadable music stores I know of have dropped DRM if they ever have used it. And unlike Apple they usually do not force you to use their own software... Magnatune which has the best download options including lossless files has gone entirely to a subscription system like the pornsites.

Thank you to my friends here who emailed me with the info. we are systematically going through each site and removing it. I am sure that for every one we remove, 10 more will appear, then we will remove those and on and on. This costs money to do this. You can call it anything you want, but when I see 9000 plus people on one site viewed this for free, I know it is stealing, which equates to lost sales. Which will eventually be the end of good movies being made. This will affect you as a customer.
I'm really curious to how much one pays to "remove" (it should be RE-move, as it literally is just moving it from one place to another over and over) the content, because whatever it is, it is too much. Removing content from one site, ten sites or even 100 doesn't prevent a single person from getting that content for free. So you're not recouping any lost sales. I too see exactly what MantraMotion saw—-virtually every Vivid title from the past 2 years available for the taking. So if you paid one cent to have any of the titles in his list removed, you over-paid. (Maybe I shouldn't admit that, as I see it led to him being deactivated.) Again, I do not advocate piracy, and going back through this thread, it doesn't seem like anyone does. It seems the people who contributed to this tread are in one of two groups; a.) informed or b.) denial.
