The porn industry may not be 'dying' as such, but it does appear to be losing the ability to retain top-tier performers. The future of porn may be nothing but homely amateurs; thus rendering it effectively dead for me.

Porn will evolve as it has always done. As long as their demand for hot chicks fucking, someone will make porn.

Actually, that may be the thing that ends up saving porn. "Homely" is definitely in the eye of the beholder.
I haven't seen much speculation on this point but could it just be that people eventually get tired of porn stars who all look the same?

I see it in a different way. Taste may vary from person to person but there are common threads when it comes to what the more popular porn performers look like. Therefore it makes sense for certain performers to gain more popularity and appeal than some others simply because of their looks. What often seperates them is the quality of their work.
I've watched porn made in the 70's to all the way to now and it's amazing to see how many of todays performer look similar to yesterdays performers.
Amateurs don't necessarily look much different from your average porn girl and why should they since they are porn performers. It's just that they are unknown or at least less known to most of us. I think the fact that they are less known is their biggest appeal in the same way that the new porn girl is often more popular at first and becomes less as time goes by. The ones that seem to keep their same popularity or increase it are those rare women that are true pornstars.

The ones I like do. Though they're not really amateurs. They're one step up from amateurs. The ones I like are the newcomers. The ones who haven't gone crazy with tattoos, too much exercise, too much sun/tanning and every kind of implant known to man. Not all of the more popular ones do this but many do. It's a shame but it's their decision.

Sure it is; and in the eye of this beholder, the amateur girls rarely measure up... and even if they do, they're here one day and gone the next.
As for porn stars all looking the same, I don't agree with that at all. I like both Eufrat and Lily Thai, but they don't look much alike at all. But they _do_ both look extremely hot, and that's something I haven't seen a lot of in the amateur scene; most of the girls look worse than the average 'sorta hot' girl you might encounter on the street.

I don't know what amateur porn you are watching, but there are plenty of incredibly sexy women in the stuff I watch. I look at it more like, the future of porn will consist of people that are actually there to have pleasurable sex with the partner of their choosing. So I welcome it, and hope it comes about sooner than later.

So there are women like the ones I mentioned above in the stuff you're watching? I'm highly skeptical. I'm also skeptical, or don't care for, the notion of 'pleasurable' b/g sex. Guys are are far too gross for me to entertain the notion that sex with them could be truly pleasurable for a woman.
Pleasurable/loving sex with g/g porn, on the other hand, is a high priority for me. The amateur stuff might seem to have an edge in that regard, but I've checked out the vids put out by Abbywinters and Little Mutt and, with the exception of the pro girls who appear on the latter, they are woeful; I simply do not find the girls attractive at all.
But yes, I can understand how the shift -- if it plays out as you suggest -- could be welcomed by some.

That must be your word for "real". I don't think every girl who shoots with Abby Winters is attractive but they are almost always refreshingly real. Or at least they were before the move. I haven't seen much AW stuff since then. Nice, womanly curves. Natural breasts. Good picture quality.

The girls in the American porn biz tend to go from real to Michael Jackson in a year or two.

No, 'woeful' is my word for 'woeful.' :p I don't care about 'real' but I do care about 'cute/pretty'; it just so happens that moving towards 'fake' often results in a decline of the latter... no real argument from me there.
Again, it all depends on what your priorities are, though. If 'natural breasts' (which I marginally prefer as well) and 'womanly curves' rank above other considerations then I can see how what AW and the like offer would meet your expectations. My preferences, though, tend to run towards extremely pretty girls (e.g: my fairly comprehensive list of favorite performers ) with tight bods :p I look through the performers available at AW and these other amateur sites, and there are very few who do anything [good] at all for me.

Judging from the current state of the world, I think it must be a whole hell of a lot more common for things to devolve. Or to simply rot.

I'm not concerned about the producers of porn being able to make enough money to afford luxury good. What I am concerned about is said producers being able or willing to pay the talent the sort of money, and the volume of work, that keeps them in the industry. Right now, that's not happening.

That's why porn stars need to cut out the middle man and do their own production. All you need is a computer with a web cam. Hell if Amy Brooke and Mya Nichole gave me a camera to film them going at it 3 or 4 times a week along with different guest performers to post on their website I'd do it for minimum wage. It would be a guaranteed success! Live web shows where your fave porn star has skype sex with you? Jerk off with Andy San Dimas as she moans your name begging you to cum with her while she fills her twat and ass with massive dildos?
Someone already mentioned that porn will not die but it is evolving and I agree. And it's going to be better for everyone because there will be more variety (something for everybody), more choices and more access to the stars. So maybe Mr. super producer will have to live with one less luxury car? Oh the horror!

If that stuff floats your boat, then fine, but I'm not into it at all. I'm into _extremely_ pretty girls, either doing nicely-shot g/g, or nicely-shot b/g + swallowing. So, if porn evolves in the direction you are anticipating, or the direction that some of the others in this thread are yearning for, then it will be 'something for some people', but certainly not 'everybody.'
That said, I do wish that more porn stars would strike out on their own. In principle, I prefer the solo model sites, because all the content features a particular model. When it comes to the multiple-model sites, they can have great content, but I usually only find that I'm interested in maybe... 10-15 girls, at the most.
Take TeamSkeet, for instance; I signed about a week ago, and I'm already 'done' with the site. I got all the Lana Violet, Jynx Maze, Roxy Jezel, Missy Stone, etc. scenes and found maybe one or two girls I like who were new to me. Now, I doubt I'll have any use for the site for the remainder of the month, let-alone any reason to remain a member beyond that period.
But say any of the girls I just mentioned had their own sites: even if they only updated once every week, or couple of weeks, I'd be satisfied, because I'm always going to be interested in seeing new stuff from them. In practice, though, I've found that the solo model sites tend to be even less-frequently updated than that, and a lot of the updates tend to be crap I'm not interested in; namely, solo/mast scenes or photo-sets. On top of that, not many models seem to even go down that particular route, so it can't be a very profitable one.

Wagon wheels on a Rolls? That is as dumb as it gets, paying a premium for the perfect comfortable ride, and then eliminating that quality of the car. However, the owner is not suprising me. His DVDs are among the most expensive, while Jules Jordan Video DVDs are also among the worst for picture quality.

Where are you hearing this? Search for a few titles or stars on Google and you'll see it's not true at all. New content hits the torrent sites before consumers can buy it.

It's more like if people started having Star Trek style replicators in their homes, then the food industry would have similar problems (along with several other industries). The replicators would probably be crippled by some DRM-like software preventing them from copying copyrighted objects but also limiting their usability in other annoying ways, and the more enterprising and tech-savvy users would hack the software like they do with gadgets today.

Actually, virtually every movie, album, and other digital product shared on the internet for free was bought by someone originally and then copied and then given out freely.
So there isn't any theft of the original content like one would have with food from a store. It's just the content is legally purchased then distributed in a way that upsets the content creators.
And the other poster is right. If we had Star Trek matter replicators, then buying a six pack of soda and going home and replicating more of it and giving out the replicated soda to your friends might be called "theft" by Coca-Cola but obviously it isn't.

Except, the person who bought it, did not buy a license to distribute it, repackage it or anything else. They bought one copy for their use. They didn't then go and give away their one copy. They made copies of it, becoming a distributor, and gave away those copies, which is in fact stealing. So yes they stole. By your logic, someone could distribute your bank account numbers, social security numbers, etc, as long as they left you with the actual card and not have stolen from you. The numbers weren't a physical item. Yet if they are used, your balances will go down and you will get bills. Works the same for companies, when people decide to distribute their product for them, they lose money because now their product is being distributed for free which is the same as someone emptying your bank account.

what i meant is that the demand will always be strong in the food industry as well as the sex industry.
no matter what happens in this civilization - people will always wanna eat and fuck.. people who say that it's a dying industry should have never been in it in the first place,,, it wasn't a true part of who they were and they mostly did it for the money.
Sells might be down but the demand is higher than ever !!! the free sites crippled the producer's profits but at the same time they were a great recruiting media. they reached out to a lot of people... now we probably have double the amount of porn viewers around the world.
how can you say that porn is a dying indursty ??? the demand is ultimately what determines the shape of an industry - even more so than the profits.
these 2 industries will never go away

Please pass these thoughts along to the all the shooters, editors, office staff and support personnel who've been laid off since this "recruiting" began.
I assume you meant "sales." Yes, they are down, which connects with my first point about layoffs.
So what? Every adult in the WORLD can demand porn, but if they aren't demanding and supporting it with their WALLETS it makes absolutely no difference.
As for the food / porn comparison - EVERYONE needs food to survive; porn is entertainment normally purchased with discretionary income, ala mainstream DVDs, CDs and movie tickets.

Actually purchasing a good then distributing it against the wishes of the content producer is copyright infringement at worst, but given the absurd rhetoric being tossed around such as yelling theft when it's merely unauthorized reproduction that seems to be the prevailing thinking among some even though it's demonstrably false, even to a child.
As for SS# or Bank account numbers, that information would be in a different category than a digital product given that if such information is used by 2 or more people it would obviously render the information useless. This is in contrast to a digital good, such as an album, book, or movie, which can multiplied infinitely without any deleterious effects on the original copy or content owner.
As for companies having their product distributed for free, that gets into the extremely subtle argument of: would someone have paid for a given product if it wasn't available for free? And the answer in most cases is no.
For example, if a millionaire bought 500 Wide Screen HDTV's and decided to give them away, would all those who accepted them need them? No. Would they even be able to afford them? Obviously not. But when such a good is available for free most will certainly accept it.
And that's how it is with filesharing, most of the people downloading content for free wouldn't have bought it anyway, ergo the number of "lost profits" attributable to filesharing are grossly overestimated.

So with the Megaupload takedown, millions (billions?) of "stolen" movies and musics and porns were instantaneously rendered nonexistent (poof!). Are the DVD factories now working overtime at fever pitch to crank out massive amounts of discs to meet the sudden tremendous surge in unmet demand which undoubtedly has been triggered? Many of the other filehosts are taking drastic actions too. Deleting files, blocking IP connections to/from the USA, disabling the sharing functions, or completely shutting down. So that will create even more demand for DVD. Right?

You have zero facts, figures or statistics to back up such an absurd assertion. Before filesharing there was a music business. After filesharing, bands can't make money anymore. Before torrent sites, DVD sales provided healthy profits for both mainstream and adult entertainment. After filesharing, both are in free fall and thousands of people are losing their jobs. The absurd claim that because a movie or song is not a physical object therefore can't be stolen is often touted as gospel by those who seek a clever soundbite to justify their thievery, but it's nonsense.
You just keep on stealing and fooling yourself into believing that those of us who create content for a living are millionaires and we're making all of this up because we are greedy.
And just to head off the also-popular argument that if people made a product worth paying for that no one would steal it, Dark Side of the Moon and Sgt.Pepper have been downloaded millions of times for free. I guess that's because they're shitty albums that no one would ever want to buy.

The underlying theme to all of this is that the demand is meaningless if consumers aren't willing to pay for the product.
If we're talking about a financial demand, then, quite frankly, you're just mistaken. I've been in this business for 22 years. When I was selling in the prosperous Clinton 90's, that financial demand was overwhelmingly there. I happily admit it. If sellers today were getting the orders we were seeing back then, this thread would not exist. I hope that clarifies it.
To unpack it even more - I just watched Tupac Resurrection on cable last night; at one point he says to an interviewer: "Look, I gave you 12 tracks, you gave me 12 dollars. We're even."
Perhaps that's crass but, again, if that was the social contract in place this thread wouldn't exist because it wouldn't need to exist.

It wouldn't render the information useless until the bank account had been drained. Until then they would work just fine. And you added without any deleterious effects on the original copy or content owner. I assume you mean something to the effect of disastrous, which isn't true, loss of income is disastrous to the content owner. So the example seems to hold up. Your argument is what falls short.
So, you are saying that if someone wouldn't pay for something it is fine to steal it. Great. I wouldn't buy your car, but hell I'll come steal it.
This is immaterial, he bought them. They were paid for. He can give them away, sell them or go blow them up with hand grenades. If a millionaire wanted to buy copies of movies and then give away all the copies that he bought there would be no problem. This example is useless.
