If you have facts, you should present them. I've read posts on this forum that porn production is down 50%. I heard a movie actress in an interview that the mainstream movie business, production is down 30%.

Wow, someone told me this forum was the best, and they were right! What a ton of GREAT information!
Does any pornstars do live sex shows? Like someone could come and watch them in person? I've heard a lot of people comment on how important it is to make a personal connection with your fans, they buy more of your stuff I would imagine. Like meeting someone at EroticaLA and then wanting to see them fucking on a DVD or computer. But what if someone wanted to see it in person, legally I mean, not like paying for escort service?

I think live sex shows are more of a European thing these days. They use to have them in NYC and San Fran back in the day.

To those making comments such as "porn will always be around because people love to watch sex and there are new girls coming into the business all the time," are both correct and incorrect at the same time. The truth is that as of this very second, there is more porn being consumed then ever before but unfortunately for the producers (the guys and girls that will give you new material to enjoy) much of that porn is being consumed for free. Now the real story is that unless something amazing happens to alter the changing business model which is quickly going down the drain, the porn business as an industry where budgets are made and new movies are created and release schedules executed will be toast.
I predict 80% of the current companies that have a proven track record of making adult movies will be out of business in 2 years. Many of you have no clue as to what free porn on the internet has done to the future of this once vibrant business. It is not the economy or the lack of originality of the producers and has put us in a decline with no definable future at this time. I know of very few businesses that can give away their main product for free (or have it stolen) and continue to stay afloat financially. Those that say adapt or die are morons as there are extremely limited ways to adapt to a business model of free.
I am completely saddened with the porn companies that are waving the white flag and putting much of their library on their own tube sites hoping to up-sell surfers to their premium products. That is not going to work and they are just adding to the problem of the glut of free content available online. Now to those of you who jerk off to free porn (you all do)when there are no more quality movies being made in a few years, you can wash your hands off and thank yourselves. You put the power into illegal downloads by transacting at those sites just like the people that ripped on Napster years ago and now those same people are going to the 'authorized' sites to download content offered by many companies desperately struggling to stay in business and it has produced one big mess. Thou shalt not steal certainly wasn't adhered to was it?
BTW: I am one of the lucky company owners that still sells a ton of movies (X-Play and www.sitcums.com)so I should be the last to bitch but I will continue to bring up my point whenever I think it might be important. We are all on the Titanic, the band is playing, the women and children are in the lifeboats and the water is very cold but the only difference is that you won't die from exposure and will be able to continue to watch old porn and amateur porn for free on the internet until the government grows some balls and rides in on their overdue white horse and blocks all access to copyright infringed upon material. Unfortunately, that will be in 4 years and too late for most producers who will have frozen to death in the icy waters of the Altantic Ocean.

I don't know since the tube sites became so popular its saved my porn budget a lot. Plus I travel a lot and its really convenient to search what I want. Sorry if this pisses people off.

The dvd side to porn just has too much in overhead costs. I don't even want to buy any dvds, the nearest porn shop to me is over an hour's drive away, any shipped item takes ~1 week for delivery, and for the extra $$ price tag, I'm still stuck watching a measly 480i picture. If it's a dying industry, would be a bit sad, but I'm not buying it anyways.
I really would like to know the books on a few websites. I'll some times check out site traffic tools like alexa & quanticast to try and estimate if sites are at least covering their costs, and it appears most are, although it's dang difficult for any new sites to get a foothold, now that most users have gravitated to tube sites or brazzers & reality kings. But then I see ccbill's rates, and according to those site traffic tools, even if enough members to break even, not a single one is breaking the first level of volume discounting ccbill offers ==> which doesn't make much sense, unless websites are actually still going strong and far above what those tools are estimating, which is why I'd like to get some info for a baseline, though I know I'll never get a hold of such information. =)
But seriously, with the rate porn is consumed across the internet, if the companies could recover just a few measly pennies above overhead costs for every view a scene has, this alone would more than pay for the production along with a very handsome profit. So I think there is some room to adapt and return to lucrativeness. But the last thing porn can afford to do is sit on their hands waiting for government to fix the problem. It will be a long time, if ever, before piracy can be controlled, because any such laws to be effective in stopping piracy would be currently unconstitutional in its design.

It's not only that they are putting their library on their tube sites, it's that they are also uploading other companies' libraries onto their tube sites without compensation. And they're getting away with it because the current laws are totally ineffective against such practices. You'd expect such behavior from the scum out there, but from actual content creation companies too? That's the mind-boggling question...

Can someone in the industry tell me why you don't gang up and put these freebie sites out of business? They are giving away your product, for crying out loud, defend yourselves.
And if that fails, hire some hackers to unleash constant DDoS attacks on them until they go offline.

I haven't read the whole thread but this is how I feel too..
"maybe stepping back 30 or so years and learning something from the successes of the past."
Today the market is choked with literally 1000s of the same tired mass produced format titles (with maybe a different focus.. teens, tits etc) - 5 scenes in a bedroom - meet, tease, bj, fuck, maybe anal, facial.
2 ages of porn are my favs..
1. The 90s - with directors like Michael Ninn whose titles had style and eroticism.
2. The Classics - movies that had genuine intimacy and the women looked like the were really enjoying it and genuinely getting off - not grimacing while some 12" stuntcock piledrives her senseless for 10 minutes.
Today's directors could learn a thing or 2 fro these, maybe release a new range or series in either of these genres... eg modern classics.
Speaking from personal experience I rarely buy any new porn these days coz they are all almost identical, and have NO reason to buy more of exactly the same.

Most directors make boring porn. A few exceptions make the difference and they are very sucesfull. For instance Jay Sin, the other directors at evil angel and the guys at Elegant Angel.
The action will always be the same. It's how you film, build up a scene, choose the wright women and men.. and most important.... directors who enjoy their work will never have a problem selling their product.
The guys and girls just doing their work and make the same shit over and over again must worry.
Talking about directors who enjoy their work... I really miss Jim Holiday and Bruce Seven...

I expect cause these freeby sites don't have any content, just torrents (tiny txt files) and shutting it down would spring up again somewhere else in no time. Tiny tracker txt files are the same reason DDoS attacks won't work either.
Torrents/piracy is almost ubiquitous with the internet today. Businesses in all forms of media need to look at ways to combat it, by offering a product which is better than the pirated ones.
Eg for music vinyl is making a BIG comeback and being pushed quite hard, an alternative to digital downloads that is renowned to have a better sound quality than the digital piratable form.
For porn movies its not that easy, but if they are to compete imho the days off producing 100 titles per year of the same old shite just with different girls are over.

There is quality now? Where?
Maybe, just maybe a factor in the equation is that there are quite a few adults out there with high disposable income who *would* purchase porn if there actually were quality titles being produced to suit there tastes?
Granted, quality is relative and highly subjective, however I spent the last days searching for quality sensual and erotic movies for me and my wife to enjoy together. Much to my surprise there isn't any.
I took quite a few steps to try to find it, including singning up here which I suspect is quite unusual for your average male with little interest in normal hardcore porn.
I am sure many (like me) more discriminating buyers would buy if there was a good product out there. The rest who doesn't care that much about what they get off to are the ones who will download in bulk and will never purchase even if given a reasonable chance.
So maybe the porn industry should adapt to the changing times and realize that the money these days may not be in selling "Slutty we asses 52" to the traditional porn consumer. Maybe the money is moving to women, couples and open minded males?
Just IMHO.

I watch porn for one reason and one reason only, and it has nothing to do with quality films. It has to do with watching hot girls get fucked by guys who know how to fuck hot girls. If anyone thinks that porn is just going to vanish because of all the free content, they are super naive. Someone will figure out a new business model, and it's that person, and those that follow that person who make all the money. It's just this manifestation of the industry, and the people who work in it, that is dying. The girls will be fine, because when you look like Sadie West or London Keys, or Katie St. Ives, someone is always going to want to give you money to watch you either get naked or get fucked. What is happening is that the middle man is slowly getting cut out of the deal. Nothing wrong with that. Porn is dead, long live Porn.

So I guess you'll be paying Sadie West $1000 directly to watch her have sex? The middle man used to do that for you but soon the middle man will be gone. He can't keep paying girls like Sadie West when all of his work is uploaded without his consent and viewed for free.

Why would anyone have to pay that much? The price is going to have to come down. Way down. The golden age is over for the middle man. All I'm saying is that the porn industry is going to radically change. It has to. My feeling is that much like the record industry, the girls themselves are going to be in charge of who pays what, through their own websites, viz bands like Radiohead and what they did with In Rainbows. Looks like the girls will finally be in control. Sounds good to me. And it sounds like the rest of you will have to go out and get real jobs.

Why would anyone have to pay that much? Because that's what she charges and she does a great job so that's what we pay. Or do you think you should be able to pay what YOU think is fair for everything? Gee, gas is 3 bucks a gallon right now but I'm only gong to pay 38 cents. On second thought, I'll just drive off without paying at all.
P.S. No one actually paid for Radiohead's album and they won't be making anymore records because of it, just releasing songs every now and then
And my real job is shooting movies that douchbags like you steal without conscience. I hope someday they ban telemarketing so that you have to get a "real" job.

Mike i completely understand your bitterness regarding this subject.
I'm an porn fan and i am absolutely disgusted by the way original content is stolen and put on torrent sites or forums. I buy porn DVD' s and i am a member of some porn pay sites. The porn industry needs paying customers just like any other business. When we porn fans stop paying it will undoubtedly affect the number and quality of the product coming out. It is not a valid opinion to say: "I don't buy porn because of the poor quality or the high prices of DVD or pay sites. Therefore i watch it for free" When you think it is not worth your money don't watch it. Stop visiting those Torrent sites because when you watch those files you are STEALING and you DAMAGE the producers of the original content.

Thank you so much. Someone finally gets it!!! It really is that simple. If people can't make a living selling their product, they will stop making the product. Every time I hear the "porn quality sucks and dvd's are expensive" argument I want to fucking scream for exactly the reason that you so eloquently stated; if the quality sucks and it's not worth buying, why are you watching it at all?!!!
If I may offer up a ridiculous anecdote to further illustrate this point. I bought a sham-wow. I used it. It doesn't work. I'm certainly not going to go out and STEAL another one, and if someone tried to give me one, I wouldn't take it. Why? because it's a shitty product that doesn't work like it's advertised. As I've stated many times before, no one is downloading Plan 9 from Outer Space from Pirate bay. They're downloading high-quality, big budget movies precisely because they are high-quality and big budget movies and not crappy movies that no one wants to see. Take a look at which porn companies are being hardest hit by torrent sites and illegal tube sites; it isn't leisure time and sunshine films.

What Mike said, plus a few bits.
The 'middle man' is the system that ensures that content goes from A) (a house in the valley usually) to B) (your favorite bookstore, website, or other distribution system.)
The problem with what you're suggesting assumes that porn girls are also videographers and directors. That they know what shots look best on film, how to edit it, where to distribute it, what legal paperwork is necessary. Trust me, it's not a walk in the park. Porn companies today are *already* trimmed to the bone in their production budgets; that's why girls *have* started taking up to %50 less than last years booking fee. The companies that used to make bank are now restructuring or going completely bust as is; what used to be a seven or eight man crew is usually a videographer/director/producer, and a PA, and the end quality is showing. I think this is also the source of the creative stranglehold that's been applied to the industry, at least over the past couple years. What used to be 'business booming as usual' has become 'business slumping as usual.' Nobody wants to gamble on new ideas, new looks, or even new girls when they're already looking at bleak financial reports.
Girls selling porn through their sites for a 'price you think is worth it' are more likely to simply take jobs dancing, cam shows, or escorting; that's at least money they can count on. Starting a website requires content (that isn't easy or cheap) to just open the doors with; eight scenes to start a site, times $1000 a scene (if you're REALLY scraping to pull it together), is still $8000 out of pocket just to have the site. Then you have advertising, affiliates, credit card processing nightmares... you're looking at probably a year before you get your initial investment back, IF you're successful. Your average 21 year old hot porn girl doesn't want to wait till she's 23 to get her 8 G's back.
Can you list ten GREAT bands you've discovered in the past five years? Compare that to any five years of music between 1990 and 2000, I'll list twenty bands that were 'discovered' from any five year span in that decade. Greed started it, pirating set it on fire. ALL media oriented industries are in for a huge shake up, and not in a good way.

Gha! Then what am I doing trying to get work as a pornographer??
Seriously, Charlotte Vale and I have been trying for about a year to learn everything we can, to get a production company off the ground. The crap I'm spewing is mostly the knocks we've learned in that year.
We're not hoping to buy mansions and Ferraris; we'll be happy to buy a house, car, and pay for the kids to go to a state college some day.
Anyway, thanks.

I think the near-complete co-option/destruction of American FM radio by Clear Channel et al. was the primary cause of that, not pirating.

I'd say that's a representation of a bigger problem. When's the last time Music Television played a Music Video?
There was real money to be made in promoting bands in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Distribution networks grow from demand, even as they shape that demand to a degree. I'm not suggesting it's a single problem issue; greedy record companies on top of greedy bands on top of greedy merchandisers on top of greedy distribution networks collided with the ultimate cash sinkhole; napster. Once music enthusiasts realized they didn't have to buy a whole album to get one song (or buy *any* album for that matter) the entire system underwent cardiac arrest.
It's not only faster, it's easier to use a bit torrent client to download and manage a song than it is to buy a song on iTunes. So long as that remains the case, iTunes will remain a novelty while other systems (actual purchasing of CDs in stores, direct downloads from Amazon, etc) will remain laughable except to the most die hard citizens who also never speed and never cheat on their taxes.

Don't get mad at me.
I'm not the one waited until the last moment to worry about this.
The film industry started making contingency plans a long time ago.
The record industry is trying to catch up.
What is the porn industry doing? Not a lot.
Maybe the porn industry should have taken all of this a lot more seriously a long time ago.
The toothpaste is out of the tube.
But why would anyone in the porn industry take anything seriously?.
Ii've seen what happens when the porn industry takes something seriously, it produces the world's most expensive grade-z cinema, with too much look-at-me community film school bullshit, with sex that is secondary to the infantile needs of the director.
That's the flaw in that system.
You're system can't survive the work ethic of the people making the product that the system produces, yet if these people had a better work ethic, they wouldn't be a member of the system to begin with.

When did the film industry start making contingency plans? Last time I checked there were boatloads of hollywood movies being downloaded for free from torrent sites. This is directly cutting into dvd sales and budgets for new movies are being slashed across the board. There are no more 20 million dollar paydays for hollywood actors because the "gravy" that used to be dvd sales is drying up due to piracy. The quality of movies will decrease exponentially from this point forward just as the music business has become a cess pool of no-talent hacks since the dawn of Napster made music a disposable entity. The dumbing down of humanity is in full swing. Porn is a very small and insignificant part of it. I may be unemployed in two years but I'll find something else to do eventually. No big deal, but at some point there will be nothing but reality T.V and disposable pop idols and that is a world that I truly fear. We are almost there.

Is Charlotte your girlfriend then JohnHenry? Lucky bastard, she seems like a cool lady. Do you know Careena Collins too then? Charlotte said in her podcast interview that she met Careena at a S&M club and was directed by her to check out porn. That's crazy that Careena is still in the clubs, she was an amazing performer back in the day.
Seems like the best way to start making your own films is to get one of the bigger companies behind you first: like Vivid-Alt with Kimberly Kane. I'd love to see what kind of films you and Charlotte would end up making.

Individually people are smart, while in groups, people are not. If you're lucky, nothing gets done. Usually the something that does get done is harmful to both the group and other groups. I am not liking the popular "blame game" going on, because there's enough blame for everyone. Yes, it's wrong to steal. There's no book that says it's a right choice (even Alister Crowley I think is trying to get his $5.95). However the people doing the stealing are mostly not people that would be buying things anyway. Remember in the 80's when people were all up in arms about people making mix tapes cassettes? The same thing happened in the 90's with CD-R's and it's the same thing happening now with computers. What's gone is the social stigmata of stealing.
There are systems of coercion (marketing/reviews etc.) already set up for the porn industry/media industry that do not allow for a changing of the gaurd, and it's being displaced by the blogosphere. Don't like the material we put out? Tough, there's no other place to go. Any chance of healthy competition is instantly obliterated, because there is no mutual respect.
These same systems of coercion failed to inform the right people. Where are the people selling sex toys/dvds to married people in churches? (what double dong would Jesus use?) When was the last time you saw a triple X film being shown alongside Iron Man 2 in a theater? It happened in the 70's...why'd it stop? Where are the politicians to say: "here is an industry that's made bank for us and here's what we can do for them"? No? Where are the lobbyists?
Where did all that money go? Did it go to pay for unsustainable lifestyles? I think it's time that people in the industry stopped thinking about themselves (I know there are those of you who are in it for the right reasons but there's a whole lot more people who ain't) and what they can get right now instead of forming long term goals that benefit humanity and the business. That starts right here. Like on ADT. That starts with you listening to what someone else has to say, regardless of what your experience is.
Sometimes I think honestly, the answer is that people in porn don't want it to be around anymore. I think that they're tired and want to give up and they're sick of it, and that is contaminating the waters. It'll be a stick figure with two circles for boobs in fifty years time.

Charlotte's my girl, yes, and thanks. We met Careena together actually, she's way cool. We had no idea she had been a performer until we mentioned to her that porn was something charlotte was curious about. She introduced us to Steve Holmes, and the rest is history.
While we'd be happy to help produce films for other companies, there's been a steep curve in learning how to do both the video and photo production. I remember the first photoshoot charlotte and I did at the house, and it makes for a great comparison to the quality we're able to create now. We've been steadily shooting content for our own sites and an interesting DVD line, which should be fully available in the coming two or three months. We'll be sure to let folks know when it's ready.

Rest assured, none of my post was written in anger. Some of your points are clear and obviously correct; I'm taking issue with the apparent justifications for piracy.
You're making a number of assumptions that suggest you feel that, as a porn consumer, you're David against the Goliath of porn production. In reality, there's no consortium, no grand puba of porn. It's an industry, and probably one of the most fractious industries in the US. I can't think of a single other (legal) functioning industry with so little regulation, no union, no trade associations. Hell, street gangs are better organized than the porn industry. Porn girls with the skill and desire to go into production have little trouble doing so, at least on a small scale. If they're successful, they can go on to have far more promising careers than their male counterparts. The truth is, though, that the skills required to be a porn model are vastly different from the skills required to be a videographer, director, or production manager. Most porn girls want their paycheck at the end of the shoot, go home, and soak in a bubble bath (or whatever they do after a shoot.) The fanboy approach to blame porn On The Producers, like some white knight, intent on saving porn girls from the producers, their agents, and themselves is just a bit disingenuous.
Justifying that it's acceptable for pirates to be taking money out of the hands of 'rich folk', ultimately, has led to the serious decline of opportunities for the very talent your enamored with. Girls are bailing out of the industry like a ship on fire, citing lack of work. Many girls left are taking hits as much as %50 of their normal booking fees, *when* they can get work; instead of 3-6 shoots a week, many girls are lucky to have 3-6 shoots a month. This will lead to even further decline of variety, creativity, and leave the companies that do survive farrrr less likely to gamble on new ideas.
You get the quality you pay for. If you're paying nothing, you have yourself to blame for what's available.

Hey, convince Careena to come back to do an exclusive scene for your first video. That would be a big selling point for the old timers who actually buy DVDs.

A movie can suck in its totality, but there could be ONE scene in it worth watching. There can even be a single act worth watching (for example a pornstar X swallowing a load which she has never done before). Why isn't it possible to purchase a fragment of your movie? What you're saying is that it's either all or nothing. In many cases it will be nothing then.

Do you make the same complaints when buying a membership to a site? RealityKings.com offers 28 sites for 25 dollars a month. Have you been writing to them, asking why they won't let you have access to two of their sites (since those are the only sites you really want) for a dollar each? Or better yet, download two dozen of their scenes for ten cents? After all it's the same price, right?
When buying a whole DVD, you're not just buying the scene. You're contributing to all of the cost associated with the making of that DVD; from the lawyer who drew up the paperwork, the admin office who makes sure lube and baby wipes are purchased, to the rent on the admin office, the physical DVD reproduction company, etc etc.
The market is moving to a Video on Demand model, no question. The DVD standard didn't come out until 1997; I suspect when another 12 years have passed, DVDs will fade the way VHS has. Having said that, distributors have a vested interest in recouping their expenses and (gasp) even making enough profit to continue to want to keep working at their job. Selling one scene at a time may be the way of the future, but it isn't rocket science as to why distribution companies are still resistant.

I'm a bit bored...no, sick and tired...seeing the same people doin' each other for different companies! Back in the day, you had bigger productions, costumes, the whole 9-these scenes had a uniqueness to them which made them hotter and more enjoyable to watch...nowadays, the girls are more selective about who they want to perform with, which leaves most of the other guys out in the cold to do just gangbang scenes...in short, it's always the same dudes!!! seems that adult companies these days only use less than 5% of the male performers to fuck all these industry girls, which leaves less variety, differentiation and less imagination. In other words, porno scenes today are a lot more predictable than they used to be. I get bored watching them becuase you already know what's gonna happen and what positions these performers are gonna do. Also....what happened to good plots and good dialogue? Gone. Less than a handful of companies use porn films with good plots and characters...very few.
I used to be a part-time performer but retired in 2006, and never want to be a part of the industry again, 'cause it got pretty boring-plus dealing with too many lies. Along with all this piracy stuff going on these days, I haven't seen this industry put a real effort in combatting this out of control epidemic. Then you have a vast amount of saturation. Too much porn out here, free and otherwise. The industry is in a very screwed up state of affairs with no end in sight. Even if the adult industry is downsized or bellies up or not, one things' for certain...as long as there is people, people will always want sex, and that is the one thing that will never be downsized or will go away.

I suppose I do, but at least with websites, there is usually an option of some cheap trial membership, in case you're interested in some scenes but don't care about anything else they have.

A girl I shot with a couple weeks ago was paid $600 for a b/g scene. You don't even want to know what I was paid.
Take a good look at the agency websites. Look at how the girls they carry are dropping like flies.

Still to make $600 as a Home Depot/Von's cashier it would take, what, 40 hours of work?
I know the agent gets a cut, plus all the maintenance like tanning, waxing, hair etc, there is still potential to earn some good dough. Of course, I don't much know much of anything and I freely admit that.
I remember Stephanie Sage was here on ADT a few months ago and said for $600? fuck it, I'm not playing. That's probably a good read for the girl thinking about getting in.

Hiya HeyNow,
$600 at Home Depot takes (roughly) a week and a half to make, and can be done in Omaha, Nebraska where a two bedroom, two bathroom duplex can be had for $600/month. You can't even rent a couch in the valley for $600 a month.
That $600 gets chopped up for rent, STD testing & associated medical costs (inevitably a girl's going to get sick from working), supplying a wardrobe and often their own makeup, gas (in LA traffic), hair salons, nail salons, etc etc. This is on top of the fact that girls are told "sorry, we're cutting your salary by %40." If you were making 80 grand a year at your job, and then went to work one day to be told you're going to make 50 grand, would you quit? Fifty thousand a year isn't bad at all, no?

And if noone buys the disk at all, do those above costs disappear? You're going to turn away 50 people wanting to pay $3.00 for one and only one scene that they feel is worthwhile in hopes that they are going to buy the whole disk? I could be wrong, but IMHO, the famous Julia Ann scene from Mother Load touted here on this site would be a popular seller if viewers could purchase it by itself to download and burn to disk, but I wouldn't even consider buying the whole disk for one scene. I used to rent Bree Olson disks for Bree and Bree only, nooone else. Now that Bree doing hardcore work is all but non existent compared to the soft stuff she does with A&E, I'd love to be able to download and burn a collection of her scenes onto one disk without all the one and done girls to get in the way.
