^ I always assumed it was called the silver age because the production values went down so steeply. Also, the auteurs of that era were less interested in emulating a classy, glamorous aesthetic so they likely wouldn't mind being viewed as "less than" in a defiant sort of way. While we often these days view the "classy" cinematic aspirations of the golden age, it was, from what I have seen, a minority of the filmmakers that were actually aspiring to this level. More seemed to relish in the trashiness of adult movies, directors such as Bob Kirk, Joe Sirkas, etc put out anything but classy films.
I would more call Greg Gark and John Stagliano the true video auteurs, not that they were challenging anything. Many of the "classy" directors started churning out garbage in the video era (I've read due to thinking that SOV productions were garbage). Directors such as Gregory Dark (who I believe started on film but could be wrong) and John Stagliano embraced the video format and started playing with what could be done with it that wasn't as possible with film (such as Lech Kowalski had done over a decade prior).

Its not as bad as CMCF but when people have sex they should take their clothes off. I don't know of any scenes from performers I like that do CMNF. Its better than both having clothes on.
