Night After Night (1976)

This is far from notable. It is short, clocking in at just under an hour. The sex scenes are largely a jumbled mash up of brief quick clips, used over and over, giving a jerky, fragmented feel. No notable new ground is broken. But, it does succeed at something seldom done well in porn: it is funny. Not as in great lines and funny jokes, but in humorous situations and amusing characters.

We open with three married men (Jamie Gillis, Eric Edwards, Alan Marlowe) in a park. They are discussing the idea of getting some sex outside of their marriages, and, as men are wont to do, all talking boldly about their prowess with women, although Alan and Eric seem a little hesitant. But, later we also meet the wives (Helen Madigan, Barbara Carson, Kim Pope), and it seems the men aren't as macho as they would like us to think; it is clear the women control the marriages and the sex lives.

But, the guys do make an arrangement with Darby Lloyd Rains to be their piece on the side, servicing each of them one day a week. Darby turns out to be the ultimate fantasy, offering to be and do whatever their hearts desire. The guys themselves, low in confidence with women and unsure of how to deal with such a dream girl, don't quite know just what they want, but Darby is good at reading them and takes charge, managing to somehow give each man what he needs.

I found the movie to be very funny. The contrast between the men together and the men with their wives is a hilarious. The scene when Jamie meets with Darby to set up the trysts is marvelous: he is practically shaking in his boots while trying to act sophisticated. On Eric's first time to have sex with her, he is extremely nervous and tries to mask it by ordering her around in another very funny scene; but, he is so shaky he can't get it up. Darby, realizing what he needs, takes charge and makes it all work. And, the scenes between Jamie and wife Kim Pope are hilarious; she is a real hoot (and also looks better here than I remember ever seeing before}. And really, all the characters do a great job of acting their roles.

Darby Lloyd Rains, of course, was one of the sexy mainstays of mid-seventies porn. Very hot lady (and those tits!), but she also had several wonderful comic roles. I think especially of her and Levi Richards together in the Henry Paris / Radley Metzger classic Naked Came the Stranger. Metzger gave us some of the best and most charming, light-hearted movies ever, but I think Naked is the most flat out funny of them. Darby was also quite amusing in Abduction of an American Playgirl, which starts off being creepy and repellent with two guys (Eric Edwards, Alan Marlowe) abducting Darby to rape her and ransom her back, but she winds up taking charge and ... well, let's just say she is more than the guys can handle and comes out on top.

Mascara (1983)
I don't know how I managed to miss this movie before, as I have always been a big admirer of Lisa De Leeuw. Both Lisa and Lee Caroll are wonderful and very convincing in this film. De Leeuw, while sexually active (indeed, eager), is troubled by her unfulfilled fantasies. She solicits hooker Caroll to help her achieve them. The relationship that develops between the two women is the heart of the movie.
The story is okay and the sex generally good but the strength is how richly the two leads develop their characters, especially Lee. Very fine performances.

Les Vices caches d'Eva Blue (aka Jouissances perverses) (1979)
This film is in French, but almost entirely without dialog except for a brief moment at the end; it isn't hard to figure out what is going on then, though I believe there is an English-dubbed version available if you want to look for it. This is sort of a version of the Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann. The delectable Jenny Feeling is being followed by a mystery man (Piotr Stanislas) who films her in a variety of sexual encounters with much the same outcome as in Pamela Mann.
It's not as good as Pamela Mann (but, that's a damned high standard; I consider it along with Naked Came the Stranger and Opening of Misty Beethoven, Metzger's other greatest hits, to be Top Ten all-time movies), but is still an enjoyable experience.
