Loads of spoilers below, so skip this post if you don't want to have it ruined... Supposedly inspired by Erica Boyer's life, Shanna McCullough stars as Boyer who, right off the bat, gets raped (?) by a lesbian classmate, only to be seduced by her female tennis coach. Then she's off to SF for college and, while on the plane, is fed champagne by a sleazy businessman (Jon Martin) who then fucks her in the plane bathroom. Once in SF, she befriends another student (confusingly played by Boyer herself) and is assigned a research project to examine sexual experimentation. Meanwhile, she's being lusted after by a tennis coach (Paul Thomas). Boyer introduces her to the world of stripping and, eventually, porn movies, but her romantic dreams of love with the tennis coach are destroyed when she discovers him having an affair with a man! As distraught as Shanna is, Erica takes creative inspiration, dresses in drag (as a man) to seduce a gay guy (Billy Dee) cruising in the tenderloin! It all ends with a non-sequitur orgy, the highlight of which is a few brief shots from one of Vosse's 60s surf films being played off a 16mm projector. Happy ending has it that McCullough and Boyer both get A's on their sex project... YOUNG GIRLS DO is a fascinating mess of a film. It's technically well made, with very good camerawork from DP Charles Gray, along with solid editing and well staged and directed sex scenes, but it really surprised me how nasty its ostensibly light hearted premise gets. Essentially kicking off with a rape scene (not the even more frustrating, 'at first they struggle, then they enjoy it' variety) ending with McCullough crying and asking why her friends didn't pull the girl off of her, to the reveal that PT is bisexual, prompting McCullough to rant on to Boyer about how all homosexuals should be shot (a big 'huh?' considering two of McCullough's previous sex scenes were between her and another woman), and even the predatory nature of Jon Martin's seduction of McCullough on the plane, YOUNG GIRLS DO is quite a bummer. Weirder still is how seemingly conservative McCullough's portrayal of Boyer is, while Boyer herself plays a sexually liberated and generally sex positive character (far more true to life than what McCullough's portrayal implies). It's odd that she would want her life depicted as essentially prudish and hypocritical, but that's what we get. Vosse's strength as a director is definitely in the sexual stagings, which he pulls off with style to spare. The new wave themed porn shoot with McCullough and Boyer is a definite visual highlight, but all the sex scenes have a strong sense for both visual flair and erotic energy (except, strangely, for the climactic orgy which comes off as rather lazy and haphazard). Dialogue and acting sections vary, with some moments feeling controlled and scripted, while others seemingly sloppy and improvised. Supposedly Steven Morowitz at Distribpix is working on releasing the Command Video catalog, the first title coming out (Scoundrels) has had almost no information on it since the original announcement in November so I wouldn't hold my breath for that one coming out in this decade. Looked quite good, there were two incidents of poor sound otherwise professional and slick. The comments from the modern porn performers was often amusing. Perhaps not surprisingly Jack St James was the most insightful of the modern commentors. I also liked Manuel Ferrara talking about what a poor actor he is! In terms of the films selected it seemed a bit heavy on more modern features but I can see wanting to avoid turning it into an apparent nostalgia fest and recognizing some of the better features done more recently. A few films (Deep Throat) were likely selected due to cultural or commercial significance rather than artistic quality. Overall very entertaining and even occasionally insightful. Desiree Cousteau was one of my favorites, and I still think she was great. As gender norms have changed, the "Ditzy Broad" trope has fallen out of favor.
