^Spitfire to me I always thought of as an underrated classic from the 80's.It didn't receive the attention of other Cecil Howard films it did however receive Hustler's Highest Rating at was quite an honor it did not get mention in Jim Holliday's (R.I.P.)Only The Best.I believe at the time it was intended to be mocking the Reagan Administration. The Dark Angel - At first I was surprised to see this feature listed with a 1987 production year on imdb as it very much seemed like something from the early 80s but then in the always dependable Dries Vermeulen review he points out the film was completed in 1983 but not released until years later by VCA. Jamie Gillis is pretty much the centre of this film and it's narrated by his internal voice throughout: he's a rich businessman (memories of Watkins Corruption) who becomes obsessed with a blonde woman (Desiree Lane) he spots in the dark park one night. She disappears and he pursues her numerous times through the city streets (the first porno to remind me of Nadja I'd say), becoming more and more obsessed and demented. His friends try to distract him with a healthy all-American California orgy, shot in a pretty effectively erotic style I should add, but it doesn't work and he increasingly turns towards darker more perverse pleasures like a trip to an insane asylum for a bizarre sex orgy, (apparent) gang-rape of one of his girlfriends and a delirious and bloody trip to a S&M club. Once you hear Gillis say "I realized I took pleasure in hurting others" it's clearly not going to end well. His final encounter with Lane on a beach definitely recalls Jean Rollin (as Dries points out in his review) and the ending fetish imagery would give Freud a field-day. One of the most interesting 'late-period' xxx features, even if it is a little heavy on the sex it does a good job of integrating it into the mental journey of Gillis' character. I watched a Joe Sarno flick called SLEEPY HEAD (1973) with Judith Hamilton as Nancy, a scheming nympho who comes between two sisters/roommates played by Georgina Spelvin and the lovely Tina Russell. (And she's especially lovely in this film since the cinematography is incredible here) Georgina plays the lead character, Bernice, who's trying to further a straight relationship with a young musician (Davey Jones) she keeps running into at the park while attempting to contain her desires for the nympho Nancy, who also has designs on Bernice's sister. Nancy's way of landing the sister is pretty out there but everything else about this flick is terrific including a wacky opening dream/fantasy sequence. Highly recommended---!!!!!
Seven Deadly Sins: Gluttony (Dir. Wash West, 2001). Pretty impressive faux-documentary based on the Dorian Gray story -- an undergrad making a doc about trying to track down forgotten porn icon, Dorian. I do like West's movies, and this is his best that I have seen (I've only seen two others -- The Hole and Dr. Jerkoff and Mr. Hard -- he apparently enjoyed Gothic/supernatural stories).
Stormy Daniels' Happy Endings (review coming Wednesday). For now, it's a very cute little rom-com with plenty of chuckles. Gracie Glam and Brendon Miller work great in the leads, but Barrett Blade, Andy San Dimas, and Stormy Daniels in the supporting roles really make the fun little story click. ^Took a few days off and literally kept watching, and I have to say I was genuinely surprised how good some of this stuff is. I more or less watched them in that order too and the one that firstly stood out was The Opening 0f Misty Beethovan. Loved the look to it, the story line and dare I say the acting, I wasn't expecting the pegging scene, lol. Also liked all the stuff with John Leslie in it particular Nothing to hide and Talk Dirty to me. I just found John Leslie very watchable and again his acting (imo) was good. I wasn't too keen on "F" although it was fun at times but not my kind of thing I might give Alice In Wonderland a miss for the same reasons. I watched the last three on the list yesterday, Great Sexpectation was excellent as well as Sexcapades so Bubble gum didn't stand much of a chance after watching those although the ending scene in the bath that a had an incest theme to it had me laughing out loud.
^ Awsesome! Re: John Leslie, you and me both. And re: acting, yes, you may dare. I really love F, but it took three viewings to get to that point. I think it improves on multiple screenings. Sexcapades and Great Sexpectations are amazing, imo. Eric Edwards is another of my favourite actors. It's nice to see you've started on this journey -- I started mine a few years ago, assuming that the quality films would run out quite fast. I have since realized the ignorance of this assumption. The movies just never seem to end, and the "to see" list gets longer and longer.
Just finished watching the Taxi Driver parody and wow was it good. I hadn't seen Taxi Driver the whole movie before so I watched it first and I have to say the film makers here did a pretty faithful adaptation to the story with a few minor alterations that really don't take away from enjoying this porn take on the classic film. Tommy Pistol is excellent in the DeNiro role from the outfits to the way he delivered the lines and he even shaves his head for the last couple of scenes. Other good performances in this come from Jessie Andrews as the Jodie Foster character and Lily Labeau looks pretty hot taking on Cybill Shepherds role. If you liked Taxi Driver I'd take a look at this as they do a great job with the story while also weaving the sex in.

I've seen some amazing shot-on-film features from that era that have the quality of the older movies combined with the trash aesthetic of the 80s proper. Stuff like The Devil in Miss Jones 3. It's a shame you didn't wait on Misty Beethoven -- the remastered, presumably-awesome Platinum Elite release is about to come out. I have put off rewatching the film for months in anticipation. Most of the way through The Friend Zone (review coming in the next few days), and once again Anthony Rosano is the man! The story's fun and the chemistry he and Riley Reid share is excellent. There's also some great comic relief from Xander Corvus. I think this is one of my favorites from the Romance Series so far, but it might just be from being trapped in the Friend Zone myself too many times in the past... A few recently viewed features: Misty Beethoven, The Musical Doing a remake/sequel/homage to one of the best ever adult movies takes a lot of chutzpah; making it a musical even more so, but it is an inspired way of achieving separation from the original. I would describe this audacious movie as something of a noble failure, though I give it high marks for ambition and flashes of success at pulling it off. In fact, I quite enjoyed much of it: it has a lot to recommend it, especially some very well written and often funny dialogue. But, part way through, the plot starts to bog down, and much of the sex in this movie gets in the way of the story. (I think especially of the boring, interminable g/g with Sunset Thomas and Michelle Lay, overwhelmed with toys, never engaging me -- the scene became a fast forward, sadly for this g/g-loving viewer.) Much of the acting was very good, especially from the always reliable Randy Spears and Chloe. Unfortunately, the weak link in so many ways was Sunset Thomas in the title role. (Besides which, she doesn't appeal to my personal taste, although -- wow! -- does she have magnificent abs!) Also, if you are going to make a porn musical, don't shy away from the concept: there needed to be more musical numbers (and more that weren't songs embedded in the story). The singing, by the way, was mostly execrable (and less singer than sound engineer), but that's not the point. Embrace the comcept! I especially loved the first real number: after being blown a bit by Ava Vincent and Misty Mason, Randy Spears has a brief conversation (two-way!) with his penis before IT -- the penis -- breaks into a very funny song in a big production number. I would have liked more numbers akin to this, but sadly, the musical part of the movie went rapidly downhill from there, disappointing my early high expectations. Still, worth seeing if you are feeling even a little adventurous. Emperor Paul Thomas does his impression of Fellini. Rocco plays a famous director in mid-life angst and doubt, Dasha his former wife and current manager, Janine his current wife. Told mostly in a series of flashbacks, plus a surreal interior fantasy for Rocco, at times it can be a little confusing until you get the hang of it. The combination of mostly good sex and complex characters makes this highly entertaining. The personnel for Emperor couldn't have been better. Paul Thomas certainly knows how to put together a movie, and the actors were mostly excellent. I was especially impressed -- dazzled-- by Janine, who was outstanding, and not just in her sexual performance (which was off-the-charts hot); I completely believed every moment of her character. Two small criticisms: much of the sex was edited in an awkward, jumpy style so that the scenes didn't flow smoothly. Also, I had some trouble understanding the dialogue. Because of a little bit of high frequency hearing loss, I often do, but between accents and lines buried in ambient noise, this was a somewhat more pronounced problem for me than normally. I should mention the excellent score, beautifully set. I was especially amused by a small Don Giovanni reference during the film festival scene. For those unfamiliar with the Mozart/Da Ponte version of the tale, at the end Don Giovanni is dragged by demons down to hell. Here, we get a brief musical quote from the final scene of the opera as Rocco addresses the crowd in a darkened theater, when the back door suddenly bursts open to show a brightly backlit woman poised, waiting for him, dressed in demonic red. It's a nice instance of the kind of clever details that flesh out this fine film. A brief note on extras, to which I generally pay no attention. There is an audio commentary (the one extra I usually like) by Paul Thomas. He has much of interest to say about the movie, but, with one partial exception, he gives no commentary during sex scenes, leaving long patches of dead air. Also, .... um, he really is full of himself, isn't he? There is also a second disc entirely of extras that will please fans of such things. Uncharacteristically, I actually watched the BTS (not bad) and some of the deleted sex, but there is plenty more for you. In short, this is a good movie elevated by Janine to something much more than that; well worth a look by fans of features. Spellbound A Brad Armstrong feature. Devinn Lane owns a failing bookstore. She and her friends Alexa Rae and Temptress stumble upon a book of magic and become practicing witches. What ensues is unfortunately a pretty weak story. Oddly, with magic in their hands, they make mostly silly use of it. In particular, Devinn's struggling business is left to be saved by deus ex machina in the form of a friend's wealthy uncle stepping in; why couldn't she have used her new found magic for salvation? For me we had mostly uninteresting sex. Of the three witch leads, I find one uninteresting and one a complete turnoff; only the wonderful Temptress excites. In a small additional role, the always fine Jessica Drake is used only in an unappealing g/g. Some of the camera work is poor. I fast forwarded through at least part of most sex scenes, watching only Temptress in full. Somehow, I usually enjoy Armstrong's films less than I think I should. Big budget features, fine production values, sometimes great ideas, and yet most seem to fall short of their promise. Offhand, I can think only of Euphoria is really satisfying. Still, they have enough positives that I keep trying.
Today I watched Misbehavin, Vista Valley P.T.A. and Sex World with Vista Valley being my favourite despite it's mixed reviews. I know Sex World should have been my no.1 choice however I'm afraid to say the fact that Jessie St. James was in Vista Valley may have swayed things slightly. ;) @GGG, totally understand why you said look out for Jack Wrangler in the kitchen scene in Misbehavin, not a bad looking guy is he? :) Easy (1978), ready and waiting on the VOD. MISBEHAVIN', VISTA VALLEY PTA and SEX WORLD are all fantastic films. MISBEHAVIN' was definitely Cuck Vincent's most successful XXX comedy (though his best comedy, period, is either YOUNG NURSES IN LOVE or PREPPIES). I was on the fence regarding VISTA VALLEY for quite a while but I revisited it a few months ago and my admiration of it was solidified. It's a far more complex work than a lot of people would probably give it credit for being. Parts are genuinely unsettling and hard to watch. Gillis is wonderful, as always, but here his typical pervert character is given far more depth than usual. Desiree West is also wonderful and I firmly believe that all of her best performances were given under Spinelli's great direction. It's a shame she only had supporting roles in his films because if he'd given her a lead, I'm sure she would have been marvelous. SEX WORLD has obviously has a reputation which precedes it, but it's also a near-masterpiece and is easily Spinelli's most visually stunning film. Although Spinelli's focus was clearly on getting great performances out of his casts, in SEX WORLD just as much attention was paid to the visual components of the film, namely set and lighting design, and the results are magnificent. SEX WORLD achieves a high level of avant-garde abstraction through its minimalist sets and exquisite use of colored gels, but then contrasts its nearly surrealist visual style with a narrative about very real people with very real problems. The more I think of it, the more I feel that Spinelli was perhaps the greatest director of X rated films. Along with Chuck Vincent, Gerard Damiano, Armand Weston and a few other gifted artists, he created works which penetrate both the mind and soul of the viewer, a rare feat in any area of cinema.

Just watched the Platinum Elite release of Blonde Ambition. A fantastic film and a a reminder of why I loved porn from the 1970s and 1980s (and took a long break from porn in the 1990s when gonzo reigned supreme). My favourite part of the special features was the wonderfully informative booklet that included the following gem about Benny Hill girl Suzy Mandel's non-hardcore participation: "Mandel's stipulation was enshrined in a special legal agreement - drawn up by the excessively-monickered New York legal firm of Nickerson, Kramer, Lowenstein, Nessen, Kamin & Soll - that was signed by herself and both Amero brothers on October 31st, 1977. An extract of the document stated that - "The Player shall not perform any immoral act and, specifically, shall not be required to engage in any actual sexual acts although she may be required to do simulated sex acts other than simulated oral sex acts; but Player shall be required to appear on camera nude or semi-nude and play her role in such a state."" Reminds me of a former bosses' tales of working in the 1970s in a New York law firm that represented the adult industry.
After GGG's negative comments regarding MALICE IN LALALAND, I decided not to invest in a copy. Still, a part of me really, really wanted to see it. I mean, it was an XXX feature shot on 35mm, made in 2010...Even if it was dreadful, it couldn't be unwatchable, right? Well, a few days ago, I was gifted with a copy, so here are my thoughts: GGG was right on the money. It's a mess of a film. The storyline is both simple and convoluted, the acting is surprisingly average and the sex scenes, though considerably shorter than most modern XXX features, still feel like poorly placed stags in the middle of a tacky, wanna-be art film. The only thing that was good about the film (and kept me from shutting it off) was the cinematography. The scope (yeah, this movie is in scope) compositions were often quite beautiful and I was genuinely impressed by the use of color and shallow depth of field. Too bad that this anonymous cinematographer's work wasn't used in a better film. Oh, the music also sucks...But at least there's music. I also watched THE FRIEND ZONE by Eddie Powell and was surprisingly disappointed, not by the script or performances, but by how uninspired and ordinary the lengthy sex scenes are. Powell is a good director who knows how to get effective performances out of his cast, but when it comes to directing sex scenes, his talent seems to be very limited. Also Xander Corvus, who is a pretty decent actor, is incredibly annoying throughout.
Fantasy Chamber A series of unrelated scenes connected by a theme: Nicole Lace is in a sensory deprivation chamber, having sexual fantasies; the boundaries between what's real and what's not quickly blur. This movie veered from boring to annoying, though it would be unfair to leave it at that. It goes for style, cool mannerism, artiness -- very Andrew Blakish, the obvious comparison. There are beautiful women dressed (then undressed) in exquisite costumes, in beautiful settings. The sex is actually seriously hot, but the tepid presentation undercuts it disastrously. I am especially turned off by having music replace completely or at least overwhelm the sounds of lovemaking, which for me always sucks out heat. In commenting on a movie, I don't usually give scene-by-scene breakdowns, but it is hard to adequately describe this otherwise; so, in brief: 1. Barbara Doll, Nicole Lace, Mark Davis: mirrors all about give this a kaleidoscopic look. The women are magnificent. It has the arousal-killing quality of no sound, just a music overlay, a characterless jazzy track that goes nowhere and quickly palls. The sex would have been very hot if not presented in such a bland, style-bloated manner. Goes for cool, not heat, and becomes the sexual equivalent of elevator music. 2. Vanessa Chase, TT Boy: this is much better! Tastefully dressed, somewhat Victorian, afternoon in a garden; they kiss, he undresses her, goes down on her -- fingers, tongue -- before she gives him beautiful head. They then fuck, at first looking very uncomfortable with her standing on one leg, the other over his shoulder, then from behind. At end, she is on hands and knees as he takes her anally, pulling out to come on her, then reinserting. The music now includes their erotic sounds as well. It's worth watching the movie for this scene alone! 3. Nicole Lace, Peter North: She's in the shower; suddenly, he's with her -- she's fantasizing it? She sucks him very nicely, then stands, bends over with hands on floor to be fucked. End with her face hosed by typical Peter North gusher. Once more, music, no sound, plus irritating visual effects (bright flashes of light cut in). Loses much heat to effect. 4. Kylie Ireland, Alex Sanders, Vince Vouyer: arriving on motorcyle, she does two guys in a dark alley, lit by fire in a trash can. Short scene. The pacing, camera work, and editing rob the scene of any hint of passion. Very dull. 5. Anna Malle, Steven St. Croix: Hard to say what goes on in this scene. With its constantly flowing, blending, red-tinged images, it played as a series of abstactions, as if shown on the dark surface of rippling water. I quickly gave up and skipped past this awful scene. 6. Kylie Ireland, Sindee Coxx: a little fetishy. Sindee dominates the collared and leashed Kylie, culminating in Kylie riding Sindee's strap-on cock. Except briefly at the end, this again has no aural element except jazz, not even the sounds of Sindee's slaps on Kylie's ass; looked lovely, sounded empty, never reached its potential. 7. Nicole Lace, Steve Drake: a short scene, but extremely sexy. Except for a very brief shot of intercourse, she mostly blows him high up on a staircase. Does anyone else feel nervous watching activity against the rail, a long drop behind? (Okay, so I am an acrophobiac.) Nicole is steamy, sultry, lavishes pleasure on his cock beautifully. Second best scene in the movie. 8. Felecia, Jenteal, Misty Rain: g/g/g with some SM elements -- brief light flogging, candle wax. Lots of toys and some lovely strap-on fucking. No image lingers long, with a slowly ever shifting point of view; this often led my interest to drift away from an otherwise fairly hot scene. Way too long. 9. Rebecca Lord, Steve Drake: flashes of bright light, backdrop of swirling clouds, poorly done. Scene mutilated by quick cutting images. Rebecca is so incredibly beautiful, it's a shame showing her to such poor effect; she is lost in this awful visual mish-mash. 10. Bionca, Jordan Lee, Kyle Phillips, Nick East, Tony Tedeschi: An industrial setting, bathed in red/pink light, semi acrobatic moments, a brief DP -- another scene that got lost in its visual pretensions and never engaged me. As I look back over the sequence, I am struck by the repeated feeling of potentially fine scenes often marred by artiness or by repetitive music at the expense of human sounds. Lots of beautiful women and some striking images, beautiful production values, a lot of good sex, but ultimately disappointing.
Sorry you didn't enjoy either film, especially Malice, which got good reviews otherwise. I think I'm still gonna check that one out eventually. The Friend Zone sounded promising, in a chick flick kind of way to me. It's still a borderline watch for me.
^ I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really didn't at all. Except for the genius and laugh-out-loud funny "upside down" part. I recently rewatched Heavy Equipment. I'm sure I have gone on about this movie before, probably in this very thread, and I am also about to head over to the gay side to go on about it there. It's a movie I didn't think existed: gay; 1970s; Jack Wrangler in every scene; I can *see* what's going on (!); neat plot; hot; everyone seems to be enjoying themselves; wood. I also watched Naked Came the Stranger (the Platinum Elite release). A review will be up soon on my site, but for now I will say that the release itself is beautiful, but I was underwhelmed by the film itself. Does it make sense if I say I could tell it was good -- a good film -- but it didn't float my boat? I'm not a fan of the cast. That might be part of the problem.
I checked out DAISY CHAIN (1984) from the same folks who made the TABOO series. It's mainly a film about the making of a porn film with the suck and fuck action behind the scenes being more of the focus than what the director (Nick Random) can get out his star Daisy (Tantala Ray in really hideous hair and makeup of the drag queen variety) and other performers. Karen Summer is fine as his assistant director/script girl plus some hunky dudes are in the cast for the ladies. Nice seeing Crystal Breeze playing a make up girl. When the production wraps, the players all get together for an orgy that becomes the finale of the film about making a porn film---!!!!
Really? This is my favorite Paris film. I love the cast and think it has the strongest acting of any of Metzger's XXX productions. Darby and Levi have great chemistry and I can think of very few hardcore features that crack me up more than this one, even MISTY (which I prefer this to).
I'll admit that much of it comes from being a comic geek for far too long, and I really liked that it was an original story with some great homages to the comics rather than just throwing sex scenes into a remake of Spider-Man. Checked out Elvis XXX over the weekend and was extremely impressed. Yes, it's a bit light on story, but that's not anything new when one works with the interview documentary style. Well, having watched the first two scenes of Star Wars XXX online at vivid.com I am very impressed so far! Excellent integration of story, great sex and humor. The performers are staying in character during the sex scenes, and those scenes are not far fetched and do not hold up the story. Some very clever lines of dialogue and clever sight gags.

Yeah, Spiderman XXX to me was another one of those modern parodies where the story is just an inconvenient interruption to mostly unrelated sex acts. Capri Anderson and Brooklyn Lee were both excellent in their sex scenes and the laneway sex scene was very clever. However, what really bugged me is that I am sure I could identify Xander Corvus's voice even if he was speaking under ten tonnes of wet cement, let alone a few millimeters of a fabric mask, lol.

They have us on a drip-feed at Vivid.com with Star Wars XXX. An enjoyable scene went up today with Chewbacca getting some action. The story did inexplicably come to a grinding halt in the middle of the movie with two back to back sex scenes in the creature cantina. I think they missed a golden opportunity here to have one of the greatest orgies in porn history with an all in creature cantina fuckfest - I imagine those ass-headed musicians would have been a hit in such a scenario. Alas, it didn't happen - a g/g scene followed by a scene with two guys and two girls all taking place in dingy corners of the cantina. As an aside, I am starting to think that over the past decade US pornographers have lost the art of filming orgies. Instead, we are repeatedly served up scenes of two to four couples engaging in heavily choreographed, clinical, synchronized sex acts. What I really want to see in an orgy is a sea of sweaty entwined limbs with every hole a goal! Any way, there was a return to the story and some witty dialogue and set-ups leading up to the Chewbacca sex scene. Hoping for a strong finish.

Final scene was a very good one (a threeway between Luke, Leia and Han - the way they deal with the 'íncest' references throughout the film is quite amusing) and there was a very long lead up with the story before the final scene as well. Probably goes close to the top of the list of my favourite parodies.
Seven Deadly Sins (Vivid, 1999) I loved this movie! A series of vignettes featuring each sin -- not just excellent sex scenes, but the makers took the time and patience for very convincing, effective build ups. Each scene was filmed beautifully and artistically (though not uniformly successfully) -- I was never for a moment bored, something I rarely say about an adult movie. Very creative, stylish, and artistic. Envy: Janine is a porn star. Janine is a geeky fan who thinks she looks like her. This green-bathed ode to envy is a kick as we watch Janine have sex with herself (although the gee whiz gimmick factor is a bit distracting) with a little help from Julia Ann. An aside about Janine: she was barely on my radar until recently. I dimly remember seeing her in a movie or two, eons ago. But, a few weeks back in this forum I raved about her in Emperor. I put on Seven Deadly Sins, not knowing she was in it, and again am very impressed: she has an intensely compelling screen presence. I don't necessarily mean great acting (which is not always there) or sheer beauty (objectively, if one can be objective about such things, she doesn't really match my type), but just the ability to command my full attention every moment she's on screen. She is real, raw, visceral, passionate. Damn, this is a woman! Lust: Candy Hill's morning starts with her masturbating, pounding herself with a dildo. During the day, she is frequently assaulted by brief, intense sexual fantasies. Eventually, the fantasy takes her over at the grocery store as she is consumed in lust by three men. Perhaps not a great scene, but so well set up that I really bought into it. Anger: Azlea's husband comes home and finds her in bed with another man, riding him hard. When hubby reveals himself after the fuck, she taunts him and he flees. In what appears to be a fantasy sequence, husband imagines giving the wife a revenge fuck. A good, intense (if emotionally ugly) sex scene, but this doesn't work for me: his character never really taps into anger, leaving the scene a bit of a failed effort in spite of the heated sex. Gluttony: This scene was a complete dud for me -- just gross and sloppy. In the lead up, I had no idea where it was going -- two people thoroughly jaded, it could have been leading anywhere. Once the scene started, it was just gross -- and not entertaining gross, just three women smearing food all over themselves while dildoing each other. And, I still don't understand the conclusion at all. Huh? Pride: Pride served by a profusion of mirrors. A porn star obsessed with herself. The sex is pretty good though fragmented into broken pieces of images, but still is satisfyingly hot and nicely plays up the sin in question. Sloth: This is marvelous. Overweight couch potato stymies the horny skinny inner woman, played by Regan Starr. The contrast between the hot, slender, lusty interior self and the can't-bother-to-move, bloated, sluggish external is hilarious. I loved this scene. Greed: Michael J. Cox, wanting a surfeit of women, finds that he gets more than he bargained on. Very hot. And Dee, as always, is as sexy as anyone can be. Another excellent scene with rousing sex.
Lol, well I always thought one of the main plot holes in comic book films or animated series was the hero always using their real life voice. I was a little disappointed with the Spider-Man XXX film also. A film full of women, and Peter Parker still can't get laid. Robby gets Betty Brant? Not right man, not right!

The Pee Wee Herman XXX film was all kinds of disturbing and funny, lol. A very accurate portrayal of the character. I did enjoy it thoroughly and Capril Anderson is great as always.
Lately I have taken a break from my usual 1970s -- 84 niche and have watched a number of movies from the late 90s and early 2000s, a few noted in the following. Frustratingly, so many of these features have no plot to speak of: the story isn't a story, it's just a situation into which sex scenes are embedded. Nothing happens, there is no dramatic arc, characters don't evolve. Dialogue doesn't move anything forward, it serves only to keep sex scenes from running into each other. My usual minimal test for feature-level plot is: if you remove all the sex, is there still a tolerable story left? A couple of these fail the test badly. Phantom Love This movie has a concept -- Steven St Croix and Stephanie Swift rent an old, haunted house cheap to film a porno -- but there really isn't any story. They don't make a film and nothing happens except for sex: the ghosts fuck both each other and the living. So, how is the sex? Generally quite good, but frustratingly shown; most scenes are made semi-boring by excessive use of long, static, unvarying close ups. This is especially true of the opening scene; any cameraman or director (or whoever was most responsible for this mess) who can make a Kylie Ireland sex scene dull must be a monumental screwup. Otherwise, the movie generally looked good, the actors were believable enough (St. Croix is as always fine), but I kept wondering where's the beef? The saving grace was the presence of some favorite performers: Stephanie Swift and Kylie Ireland are always sizzling. But, the real find for me was Kimi Lixx. Until about two weeks ago, I was familiar with her only for her smart and sensible postings to these forums. But, I have now seen her in two movies (Blue Angel the other) in which she leaped off the screen. Ms Lixx is one of those committed performers who looks fully into the sex; few people can make on-screen lovemaking feel so genuine. I was especially impressed with her oral skills: she doesn't so much suck a cock as use her mouth to make love to it; the woman is an artist! So, a framing device without a story. Good sex somewhat poorly displayed. But, I wouldn't say it was a waste of my time because of the exciting work of of Swift, Lixx, and Ireland. (Sounds sort of like a law firm; I'd take all my legal work to them!) Beast This Michael Raven film shows what a feature can be. The dark, mood-drenched movie had a true narrative and rich characters, as opposed to merely being thinly connected sex scenes; it's the polar opposite of Phantom Love. Femdom-laced BDSM scenes are not my fantasy, so the sex wasn't as inherently interesting to me as in Phantom Love, but is much better shot. This is a very nicely constructed film, darkly atmospheric, the acting is good, the story holds up well, the sex is often beautifully filmed, the overall look of the movie real and palpable. In spite of my minimal interest in the dominant/submissive milieu, this held my unwavering attention. Very worth watching. Chill Porn does Big Chill. Plot non-existent, just people gathering for a funeral (Dee's husband), a little dialogue, nothing happens except they fuck. Complete absence of narrative arc. Female cast is fine: for me, Dee is among the most purely beautiful of all adult film stars, with an earthy sexuality that is irresistible, and the others are all good as well. Except for the first scene, all sex scenes run too long, weakening otherwise good sex. As a feature, pretty much a non-starter. Thumbs down, I'm afraid. The 5th Horseman Evan Stone directs himself in one of the poorest movies I have seen in a while. The concept, laid out in brief voice over: a woman has been killed in a small town. Stone is an avenging angel who must collect some of her belongings, resurrect her, and take vengeance. But, there is almost no investment in the story: they devote literally seconds to Evan picking up her goods; there is no indication of what happened to her or how the townspeople were involved; the movie finishes with a quick Lazarus on her (and a fuck on her grave) before Stone points at the people to consign them to hell, all in a poof and a whiff. Which leaves almost the entire run time for sex. Unfortunately, the sex scenes are too long and badly get bogged down, constantly getting stuck on one thing and running it into the ground, finally moving on just to get stuck again. As a result, basically good sex becomes terribly boring. With zero commitment to the story and way too long, incredibly stagnant sex, this movie gets tossed into the discard pile.
Back to my usual time frame: I have just watched two films from the mid 70s that couldn't be more different! Both quite good, though in each case not for everyone. In brief: The Felines (1975) Very little sex here, but that isn't what it's going for. Thick with erotic tension. French wife Maude's husband has a mistress; Maude speaks to both hubby and mistress trying to end the affair, unsuccessfully. So, she brings a hot young sex kitten in as house guest to seduce her husband away from his mistress, knowing the wanton kitten is, unlike the mistress, no threat to her marriage. At the end, the mistress has been discarded, the husband in a libidinous lather, and the guest also starting to make moves on Maude. Very deliberately paced movie, letting things develop slowly, more a mannered social comedy than a fuck film. The sex is not going to excite anyone raised on more modern fare. It is brief and rich with caresses and erotic mood, but not with impassioned, vigorous activity. (In particular, an early scene with the wife and husband perhaps indicates why he has a mistress, besides sexual convention: the wife is, shall we say, languid? Shall we say, inert? However, fortunately for the plot, she is also clever in her Gallic way.) I enjoyed this movie with its rounded characters, meaningful looks, beautiful scenery, and patient development. But, it is not for the fan of high-energy, action-filled films. Some might even call it boring. I don't. Hardgore 1974 This mixture of hardcore sex and horror/gore is surprisingly entertaining. Although it is grim and with a downer ending, I really enjoyed this, surprising myself. It isn't Great Art, but edges itself surreptitiously onto my Guilty Pleasures list. Warning: as also noted in my comments about From Lust Till Dawn, I have little experience with the horror genre, so perhaps I appreciated what more attuned others will find weak and cliched. A young woman is placed in a sanatorium to be treated for nymphomania and masochism. Unfortunately, the place is a cover for murderous satanic worship. Several of her nurses are killed and she herself is being prepared for ritual sacrifice as well. While not overly graphic (certainly by the standards of current special effects), the movie does give us such oddities as a man's dick being severed mid-blowjob, a woman guillotined as she's being fucked, and -- a first for me -- flying, fireworks-propelled penes drenching the young woman with cum. Ponder that a moment. The copy I watched was from a very grainy, streaked print. You might have better luck -- I believe there is a commercial release out there somewhere. I'm not a big fan of SLEEPY HEAD or any Sarno hardcore (except A TOUCH OF GENIE). SLEEPY HEAD has its moments, in particular the (underdeveloped) relationship between Spelvin and Davey Jones, but like most Sarno hardcore, it's poorly paced and overly long. Having now finished Sleepy Head, I rather have to agree with John here. Yes, it has good moments, provides Georgina Spelvin the chance to create another fleshed-out character, and has the shadow of a good story. But, there were frustrating moments throughout and it generally lost its way toward the end as it bogged down in the seemingly endless orgy. It left the impression that the orgy was the climactic point of the film, not the resolution of the plot. And yet ... Spelvin was in so many truly great films that put this to shame: Devil in Miss Jones, 3 a.m., The Dancers, Mystique, Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann, Desires Within Young Girls, Ecstasy Girls, etc, that we might dismiss the lesser vehicles. But, this is one of quite a few movies a cut or several below the aforementioned classics in which I still appreciate the chance to watch her bring a character to life (films such as For Richer, For Poorer; When She Was Bad; Tropic of Desire; etc). She was always worth watching even if the movie fell short of greatness.
A couple of hellish themed movies that are complete opposites of each other: Through the Looking Glass Disturbing, psychological horror story. Catherine Burgess is a troubled, repressed woman, obsessed with the past, her father, and his death. She begins seeing him in an old mirror locked in the attic, but much is ambiguous (at least until the end): is she really seeing him, or is she delusional, hallucinating? Is it her father she sees or a demon masquerading as him? This is not an erotic movie: don't watch it if you are looking for lots of hot, pornographic sex, but it is a harrowing, grim story, ending in horror, madness, and degradation. I highly recommend it, but urge you to watch it at a time when you are not in the mood for porn. Hannah Goes to Hell If you took all the sex scenes and edited them down to about a third their length, I might find this movie watchable. As it is, often seriously hot sex ran on so long that I was bored out of my fucking skull. Hannah Harper is the centerpiece of every scene, which could have been problematic, but she carries the load admirably; alhough to my taste Ms Harper isn't upper-tier attractive, she is a very exciting, energetic performer and sells each scene well. But, when you have scenes running over half an hour, I am long gone. I'm afraid this failing so put me off that I am really unmotivated to say anything about the movie. Yes, Hannah goes to Hell, where she is used and abused (in at least one scene very unpleasantly).
For another type of hell, that inside a tormented mind, I started watching Forced Entry, but found it way too ugly, so quit part way through. To cleanse my palate after that, I switched to something much more appetizing: Je suis a prende Let me note right up front that I do not speak French, a clear liability for this 70s French film. But, having read a synopsis before hand, I had little trouble following the story. It is not dialogue intensive, being instead very visually oriented. And what visuals! Start with the erotic beauty of Brigitte Lahaie, whom I once listed among my top five all-time porn favorites (an opinion still unchanged); she captivates here as usual. But beyond her obvious beauty, this movie is gorgeously shot, filmed in a warm, soft style with wide vistas, lush settings, beautiful light. It is a feast for the eyes. So, in spite of what's lost by my language limitations, I was mesmerized by the movie's look. Not that its only virtue is pretty pictures. The sex is also very satisfying. Lahaie is the focus of the sexual activity; as always, she is sensuous and so erotically charged, so arousing and exciting. I fall in love with her in each of her movies! Oh, and about that synopsis: in a nutshell, Lahaie is an innocent woman who has just married a wealthy, landed gentleman (I use the term loosely). We find that he leads a debauched life, with evenings spent carousing in the local brothel. To ease Brigitte into the lifestyle he wants her to join, she is administered nightly doses of an aphrodisiac in her milk (and don't we all wish for such an effective sex potion!) and the house staff turned loose on her. By the end, her sexuality has flowered to the point that she is ready to be introduced into the nightly brothel orgy. For a beautiful, erotic classic film, I highly recommend this.
