If you just want "some porn", in a generic sense, you can get your fix from those alternative sources. But if you care about quality or particular performer or particular title or just plain convenience, DVD is the only way to go.

1. I would say quality. If it's anything like Youtube, the quality has to be horrendous.
2. Just knowing you're getting your money's worth and supporting the people who make the shit you love. Stealing porn is killing porn. Just think about that if you're jacking off to stolen porn. You may not care now but you might when there's no profit in it anymore and nobody bothers to make good porn anymore.

If I was living in an age where porn was hard to get, I'd probably pay for "anything".
But porn is now abundant on the web.
I've seen it all. Now, in my late 30s, I'm more finicky.
There's an abundance of porn. Now it's more of a matter of finding what rocks my boat.
I'll buy a particular video if...
1. I'm attracted to the women.
2. It suits my particular fetish.
3. It's rare/hard to find.
For example, I like the "Mother and Daughter sharing a guy" fetish. So when I saw the description on Cocksmokers 4x4, I got tired of waiting for my video store to carry it. I just bought the DVD online.
Another example, I like well-done orgy videos. So if I see what appears to be a good one, I'll buy it.
If I wanted to jack off to generic porn, I'd just watch RedTube and never buy again.

You mentioned in another thread that you like Beaue Marie.
Support her by buying her work instead of stealing it!

Forget "fill in the blank"-tube. DVD porn rips are everywhere.
Porn business model must change if it wants to keep the same profit levels. The most popular titles are pirated and disseminated minutes after release. Look how aggressively the RIAA has gone after people. Still they have hardly even made a dent in US piracy. The best porn can do is have their material removed from non-East European or non-Asian file sharing servers when they find it.
For some legality/morality are blurred when it comes to stealing porn. It's a Robin Hood mentality. If you steal from someone whom "you" perceive just as immoral, are you wrong? Would you chase down a known drug dealer to give back money he accidentally dropped? Another example - those that refused to honor their draft cards for Nam were committing crimes however most felt they were morally right.

I think as a whole, most people would prefer to keep their porn watching habits a secret. Most people only casually watch porn and do not want to pay for "evidence" if they can watch it for free. They think, "why go through the hassle of having to hide or justify to their spouse why there is a mysterious charge on their credit card".
It is unfortunate the state of the industry right now but the bottom line is this: People will always want porn. People will always watch porn. People will pay for porn if the content is unique and the only way they can get it is if they pay - and they will pay for something they really want.
Eventually, as the market continues to weaken, the studios are going to have to modify their game plans (either up the quality, change the distribution, pricing, whatever). I imagine there will be fewer releases in 2009 than there were in 2008 but I may be wrong. It will be interesting to see which studios actually make money and which ones will shift their business and marketing plans.
It is important though that if you are a fan of something, support it (within your budget of course). If you have a favorite model, studio, or fetish - use your voice and show the industry execs that is what you want more of.
P.S. The only voices executives listen to are from guys named Franklin, Washington, Lincoln, and Hamilton.
Now go out and buy some damn porn!

Did I miss something?
Is Lubetube, Redtube, etc... operating legally?
Do they pay to use the material or is it pirated?
IF it's pirated, have the owners of the material taken legal action?

I think the number of people who know how to get porn for free through the various means listed are very small in terms of just how many people buy porn. I think peoples ignorance is a reason porn will keep making money as opposed to people's morality on stealing.

Its true that most people dont know they can get porn off the net for free with decent quality, such as torrent sites. Youporn ect are crap!
I'll probably never buy porn again, although seeing Alexis Texas get her arse nailed in BlueRay on my 50" plasma might change that!

Blu Ray could possibly breath new life into porn.
If porn producers used High Definition cameras to record High Definition video. If the sets were well light and the camera moved in closer to capture the beautiful texture of female skin.
Then, perhaps, customers may pay for High Def Blu Ray porn.
Then again, I've noticed that many people go online and pay for poorly recorded compressed video files.
Quality or quantity?
I wonder.

Also consider that torrents and flash videos require a high-speed internet connection, which is not as universally widespread as many believe. People without high-speed connections cannot get free porn even if they know about its availability.

Great point, I think it is like any industry, you either have to innovate with changing times and technology or go the way of the dinosaur. The point was correctly made that people are always going to want porn, and are willing to pay money for what they want. So you are guaranteed a consumer no matter the circumstance, but it will be the nimble companies that cater to that new type of consumer that survive. As for the approach of strict prosecution, I think we are seeing within the music industry preventing pirating is like trying to plug every hole in a slowly leaking damn, it's a losing fight. That isn't to say we should welcome piracy, if it is illegal/immoral it is illegal/immoral and should be stopped. That being said, I think the future rests with the companies that are able to give the consumers a real reason not to pirate.

But in my opinion the blu-ray evolution in the adult-industry is going very slow compared to when DVD started to replace VHS. In a way I can understand why but still I wish my favorite companies would release more blu-ray movies faster.
I think real pornfans and collectors like me go for quality while people who just want to jerk off fast without paying anything go for quantity.

I don't rip at 'pirates' because I support their cause and I think the companies are fucking anal in general, hypocrites bitching about a few measly dollars less in their fat filthy pockets, blowing the whole 'problem' out of proportion calling everyone who downloads a 'thief', because of course ordinary dumb people can't understand or even pronounce 'copyright infringement'. I see P2P as fair use, but soon we won't even have the right to say what we read in the paper this morning... and the incredibly evil act of sharing the paper will garantuee capital punishment.
America is obviously just trying to protect powerful economic interests, not rights, and sadly they gain support in people who fall for their ridiculus propaganda machine.
Just to get that part of the discussion out of the way...
I've been downloading stuff since 10 years back, probably when Napster was the latest craze. I think it was a problem back then because the technology opened up a whole new world, not even I cared for the lousy quality in 128kbps mp3s... since then it has only served as a guide, I take the CD with me home without paying for it and if I like it (and find a copy, not download) I pay, simple as that.
With porn I can see many reasons why to download less legit or watch it for free online. But the thing is that very few people have a genuine interest in porn, they want something new everytime they feel like jerking off... and if it wasn't free they would use something else, or use the same DVD with a 100 heavily compressed scenes over and over...
I buy because I find it convenient and real, bootlegs have very little value to me.

There are a lot of different points here, and I'd like to add my 2 cents. I'd like to quote about 6 different posts, and I'm sure there's a way to do it, but I can't figure it out. First the availability of high speed internet. I live in Pennsylvania, and you would think that here, good internet connections would be as easy as buying a Mc Donald's hamburger. Not so. There are a lot of places in this state where getting even decent dial-up is hard. So being able to download isn't that easy in many places in the U.S. Many in home computers tend to be in a central spot, so if you want to watch in some form of privacy, it's not that easy. Many like to watch porn in the bedroom. Many people do not have computers in their bedrooms. Yes, you can download and then burn the disc, but it requires extra steps. Many of the downloadable sites only have clips. I personally, want to see more than a short clip. And then there's the stealing/piracy issue. Whether you're Evil Angel or a small in-home producer, you've got a right to protect your own products. I think that some sort of "buy it, take it home" product will continue to survuve for some time.

Am I understanding you correctly that you don't consider "being illegal/immoral" a "real reason"?
A free society depends on a consensus on basic moral principles.
If the only reason people don't steal, rob and kill is the fear of prosecution a free society is doomed to become a police state.

If by "real reason" you mean that I believe that it is wrong both morally and because it is illegal then yes, stealing is wrong on both accounts in my opinion.
BUT
Within any society, free or not, the code of laws are broken into "so called" malum prohibitum (wrong because they are prohibited) and mala in se (wrong because they have been deemed to run afoul of society's consensus of what is moral). For instance everyone will agree that within any society murder is wrong, because it runs against an almost universal moral standard, but can we really say that it is decided moral issue that someone should be issued a ticket when they don't follow through with their vehicle registration? I think you maybe guilty of speaking in absolutes about an issue that is more gray than black and white.
That being said, the very fact that so many people are stealing goes against you point to an extent. Either we have not really reached a moral consensus about pirating, because a large number of people don't seem to feel morally convicted about doing it, or maybe the only reason people weren't stealing to begin with was simply because it was "illegal" and not also "immoral". You do raise a good point though, I feel their does need to be a balance, and too much law for the sake of law, coupled with people's ONLY motivation being fear of prosecution can lead to an authoritarian system. I really don't want to derail this thread though, and these ideas are just food for thought.

Yes if you only have dial-up internet, downloading porn scenes isn't going to happen, you'd have to start where i did and stick to small clips.
I dont consider using a torrent site for porn stealing, how do i know where the source came from? For all i know someone bought the DVD or has a subscription for a porn site such as BangBros or Brazzers and is seeding it out of the goodness of there heart!

People will always come up with rationalizations to justify getting stuff for free (aka stealing). There's a part of them that probably understands that by doing so they're hurting the industry they're stealing from but their thought process is usually "They make plenty of money anyway..." or "the suckers who pay for this will keep them in business..." or "yeah, but everyone else does it..." all lame rationalizations they say to themselves to ease their conscious of the fact what they're doing is wrong.
Plus I'm always amazed at the low crappy quality people will accept just for the sake of getting something for nothing. I've worked with guys who bring their lousy burned CDs to work and the quality is annoyingly bad. They skip and get hung up every other song.
People will sit there and look at a fuzzy jerky picture on their computer so they can save a few bucks. And it really is a few bucks these days. You can get pretty decent porn pretty cheap these days online and from the stores that sell porn.

^ lol...
Stealing is taking something from someone so that the person you're taking it from no longer possess it... thus the logic behind dowloading = theft is obviously faulty and also incredibly stupid...

I don't even think there's a legality/morality issue involved I think the thinking is plain and simple "free vs paying" or being able to get the new stuff at less than half the price. And I think some people like to feel they're getting over on "big Business". Also, this kind of thing is very common with "regular" movies too. I see guys pay 5 to 10 bucks for a bootleg copy of a movie that in the theatres. They're willing to take a chance on the quality of a often crappy bootleg to save a few bucks than pay the extra 5 bucks or so to see it on the big screen or pay the extra 5 bucks or so when the movie comes out on DVD with higher quality and extras. They'll spend big bucks on a HD widescreen tv to watch low quality stuff on it. It's all so stupid.

I don't think anyone has come up with an accurate estimate of the economic impact the p2p's have on the porn industry or the mainstream for that matter. I think many of the down loaders are probably too Young to purchase porn legitimately,or as mentioned "would prefer to keep their porn watching habits a secret".
I do not consider piracy a moral issue anymore than in the days when someone shared copies of an audio tape with a friends. The technology has outstripped the industry's ability to control how their products are distributed and now they must catch up.
Theft must contain the INTENT to deprive. In my never ending quest for organic porn. I've recently begun to watch porn from Golden era. An acquaintance pointed me to a torrent site that he said contained vintage out of print titles. If it's true that vintage porn fan are digging into their attics and basements to share with the like minded, titles that are not other wise available, than the practice is pointing the way for some enterprising business person.

The logic of only attributing one definition of "stealing" to a use of the word is equally stupid. Perhaps you could "steal" a dictionary and look it up.

Very true. If all you want to do is get off, free sites are the way to go. I look at them occasionally myself. But the truth is I have yet to find one of favorite scenes on one of the free sites. In fact when I put the name of one of my favorite performers in the "search" box on those sites I rarely get more than a few matches, even when I only put in the first name (i.e. Sunrise, Holly.) Better yet, sometimes you get matches of other women with those same names.
Also, I'm not one for watching a lot of video on the computer. A big part of my job involves staring at a computer monitor, so I try not to do a lot of it in my free time.

Obviously we don't have a moral consensus about pirating.
That's the problem.
Even here on a porn board where the true porn connaisseurs are expected to be many people endorse pirating.
If we don't find a moral consensus about pirating very soon we are going to have an authoritarian system on the internet.
The smaller companies will go out of business.
But the bigger companies will make sure that the government enforces their rights.

For me and these bootleg copies of movies its not about saving money. For example when a movie comes in theater if it looks interesting enough I will go watch it but then sometimes I will pick up a pirated copy to watch until the DVD comes out and as soon as the dvd comes out I buy it. I know a lot of people like that, very few actually just have a pirated collection.
I also think external appearance of the dvd is important too. I don't want to have some cheap cd covered dvd's all over my place, I want the actual dvd case on a shelf to easily pick it out when I want to watch it, going through a large pile of pirated crap is not my idea of fun, even if whats on the dvd is a perfect copy.

The difference is that analog duplication was not a threat to recording industry. The quality loss during the transfer process was enough to deter mass piracy. Copy of a copy of a copy until you eventually had nothing left. With digital duplication there is the potential for little to no loss over millions of copies. Now the originators bottomline is effected.
If you are dumb enough to get caught, then you can be held civilly liable at a minimum.
No debate on this one. It is definitely theft by US and international law. You INTEND to deprive the video producer payment for their work.
Video from the Golden Era still have valid copyrights therefore you are technically stealing those to.

At least in America, the leadership is listening to the entertainment industry. I can see them taxing the internet as a means to combat piracy. The more you download, the more you pay. ISPs would be more than willing to go along that.

I find it very funny that at the same time the US has been totally cool about the extensive bootlegging in Asia, Africa and South America... I mean, P2P is basically non-profit, no one is ripping a DVD in order to sell it. I believe the mentally that is FUCK THE COMPANIES is what they can't and won't take, it's about the principle, to strike down this dangerous mentality which threatens the status quo. Let's call them pirates, let's call them eco terrorists, lets call them anti-american, lets call everyone that dooesn't put economy in the first room communists... it's bullshit.

But it will be difficult to allocate the taxes.

No. Just as a disincentive to download mass quantities of data illegally. The major companies would not get anything directly. ISPs would be in charge of collecting the tax. The infrastructure is already in place. ISPs already know how much you download. Maybe like a $1 per 5 gigs uploaded/downloaded. This is different than fees or caps the some rogue ISPs charge now. Original content providers would be exempt from this tax.

I think it's just fine if they go after real piracy, people who sell bootlegs or set up paysites with unlicensed material. But going after sharing is not very smart at all, seems more like a desperate 'solution' to a still largely undefined problem.
The attempts to counter filesharing has only lead to activism, something that didn't exist before. It used to be about fans sharing with other fans - not 'organized elite groups' taking pride in ripping DVD screeners, aiming to 'make a name for themselves'. It has taken a similar form to the hacking community, appealing to that same crowd.
I don't want to support companies that treat potential customers in this hostile kind of way, suspiciously controlling with the use of copyprotection and endless warnings, suing individuals for downloading a movie or two. Luckily, there are a few companies that understand that hardcore fans do spend a lot of money on good shit, and that we're not easily fooled and manipulated.

Seems difficult to implement. ISP's can blindly determine how much data gets transmitted to a given user. But how will they separate my NPR podcasts from my VOD purchases from my internet radio listening from my iTunes purchases from my youtube viewing from my P2P downloads?

You can keep the list going because you are also fucking up the existence of the cast members, camera operators, sound operators, the people who own the locations, the people who replicate the discs, do the artwork for the discs, the stores that sell the discs, the employees at the store that sells the discs, delivery drivers, landlords, etc.

They could implement a certification process where a company or companies offer certification on the content of a site which is transmitted to the ISPs so they know.

I have pointed this out before and will likely again but in many ways the adult industry is directly responsible for all this piracy.
This industry, with no regard for quality or the consumer pumps out substandard crap and has for years, from sell throughs and comps to just plain shitty movies. You cant pick up a copy of avn without some distributor in a full page ad calling himself the biggest whore in the industry sells DVDs to retailers for a dollar.
So to start with we haven't recognized any value of what we produce. Secondly we have been so busy thinking of new ways to fuck the consumer that we havent protected our copyrights (as if you can protect the copyright of 1000 releases a month at paper thin margins)
So if we as an industry do not value our product and our customers how can we expect the customer to respect us?
Sure its wrong, but the consumer doesnt see it that way and all the harping in the world isnt going to change his mind.
As for quality and or bluray saving the industry...fat chance at the moment. I bet you dollars to doughnuts the day after Pirates 2 is released I can download the entire bluray version, a perfect copy, menus and all, on usenet in less time than it takes me to go to the video store and buy it.
Over time I do think technology will intercede, much as it did with satellite television and make piracy a thing of the past, but most companies you know right now in porn will be long gone before it does.
All I can say to pron people is...you reap what you sow.

Absolutely.
I just picked these four popular ADT members to give the abstract "companies" a personal face.
Fans like Gunzo seem to be unable to see that they steal from women and men and not from some "anonymous big greedy company".
I presume many download-thieves would never steal a DVD from a store because they see the salesclerk and know they would harm this salesclerk.

The reference to Pirates 2 was not an indication of lack of quality on DPs part its a reference to the fact that arguably the biggest, highest quality release of the year will be available simultaineously with it's release.
the reference to reaping what you sow is aimed at the industry as a whole (of which I am admittedly a part remember)
We do share the blame in this, as an industry.
I constantly find DP Products on file sharing sites, nzb sites and whatnot and I send the links to Joone. I recently handed him a smoking gun, one of the largest sites that claimed they dont host anything left a server directory unprotected, in that directory were THOUSANDS of copyrighted videos and photos, obviously hosted on this companies server.
What DP chooses to do with that info is up to them.

I don't consider the material on those sites equate to porn, but rather the refuse of a public scrap heap.
For some, they may appear to be goldmines of yanking fodder, for others a place to browse for the unique odds and used ends, but more like a crappy swapmeet, after one or two visits, most if not all who appreciate any concept of quality, have likely seen enough.
