Kind of interesting but I really hadn't realized the amount of time I spent playing games online until i read this. Its far more than time spent looking at porn. Actually I'd also have watching television online as well thanks to hulu putting up almost every episode of Lost, Arrested Development, and 24. Meh, sure porn is fading, but so is every other industry in this economic climate. Whatever the full truth is, I still hate when articles *only* focus on dvd producers, and forget that part of their decline is due to competition from pay websites. I still spend a fair amount on porn, but like 95% of it goes to websites, only a small bit goes to dvds.

I do't know since discovering the tube sites i haven't really purchased porn since at least 2007. Let alone any printed publication. I do get a free subcription to Playboy though not sure if that counts.
This is such a complex topic.the porn industry is like a battalion being attacked from all sides at once.In my personal opinion I see 2 options. 1.)the industry continues its path, allowing piracy to chip away at their earnings and waits to see what happens. 2.)the industry gets tough and mounts an offensive against piracy while there's still money to lobby Washington to pass tougher laws while suing and taking down websites pirating their content so aggressively and costly to them that its no longer worth doing it. there will always be demand for content,always.but I feel the industry is going thru a transition,a re-invention if you will.that may lead if not to a smaller industry,but maybe smaller companies specializing in certain niches.
It's not porn that is dying. It's the delivery system and means of distribution that is having a tough time. Porn will survive. As long as there are human beings on this planet porn will be consumed. I've been watching porn since the early 90s and I have never seen an amount of incredible talent like there is right now. If anything, I think we are in porn's Golden Age. One day people are going to look back at the early part of this century and realize what a treasure trove they have on their hands. Just go ahead and try and make a top ten list of your favorite pornstars. It is impossible. That's how many obscenely hot girls there are in the business right now.
DK just asked a great question and lilacwine made an excellent point. there are more companies so your share of the pie gets smaller and lack of creativity and vision will hurt any company. the article mentioned girlfriends films has actually seen an increase in sales.I don't usually watch girl/girl because it seems so fake but I love their stuff, specially the "Mother-Daughter Exchange Club" series.their videos are credible and very sensual and hot,I actually watch the whole thing without using the fast forward button. so, if you want a bigger slice of the porn pie,it would be a good idea to arouse our brains as well.

Been saying that for years. I've always said, as a business man; If I ever got involved with the industry, I would just start being companies and sites. Especially, alot of the smaller sites (mostly perfomer sites) that rarely get update or use liscense content that is not exclusive. I would buy the sites and consiladate them. After I had bought alot of the smaller sites. I would start trying to purchase some of the bigger perfomer sites and some the more well known networks. My business model would be sorta like how the music industry is now, with 3 or 4 companies owning 90% of the all labels.
Pirates are killing porn. I just got my DMCA report back from the company that asks pirate sites to cease and desist, and it's just another depressing report. My entire site, for the most part, is readily available free of charge. And sure, the links will be removed, and next month, when I get my next report, all those links will be up again, and they'll be removed again, and the cycle will continue. Until the operating systems -- Apple and Windows -- make it at least somewhat difficult to view (or listen to) pirated content, fans will see less and less new content being produced. I know...I know. Woe to me. Poor Billy. And to you I say God if forbid someone rips you off. You lose your mind when someone steals from you, but flame me when I tell it like it is. OK, rant over. I just got done looking at my report, so I'm pissed...but I'll cool down. In the meantime, if you like it, support it. Buy the music you listen to most, and pay for the porn you like. I do the same. ^^ I don't understand why guys don't join together and fight. Another forum, I asked a producer this and he said, that even thought the porn community is close-knit group, there is so much back-bitting, back-stabbing etc. that it wouldn't work. why don't you guys start some group like the RIAA, to fight for you? It's like you guys aren't doing anything, with hopes that it (piracy) goes away. It isn't. I pay for my porn, but I have seen forums and blogs, where entires sites were avaibable to download if you had a rapidshare or depositfile account; And fuck depositfiles and many other file-hosting services are now paying uploaders to distibute you guys content. That would really piss me off, if I where you guys.
There's lots of porn I'd love to buy but can't because genius porn distributors have privacy policies that include sharing my personal data with all the world. Or work with billers who do, like CCBill. Or infest their porn with DRM. A little bit of fairness goes a long way and I'd never steal from a company that takes this to heart. The deal is porn for money. Not porn + DRM for money. Not porn for money + data shared.
I am happy to see the industry die. The problem with porn is not the porn. It's the porn industry. Once the profiteers are gone, only the artists and exhibitionists will remain. CGI porn is also on it's way, and will eventually kill the beast for good.

I hate to feed the trolls, too, but I'm on a roll...and I can't resist. I bust my ass -- 50 to 60 hours a week -- to make the best quality adult content I can. It's not perfect, and I'm sure there's better...but this is my job. What's Mr. Sentinal's job? What's he a "profiteer" from? Maybe pirates can come take his livelihood and make the world a better place, too...leaving his industry to the "artists".

I don't see why anyone who's on this board should have to agree with you to post here.I don't know who you are, and I don't know if your work is any good. You may be the exception to the rule, I don't know. More to the point, I don't see what relevance my job is, but for the record I'm an 11 Bravo. Piracy does not affect my "industry". Pirates are reacting to a bad business model. They don't want to pay for crap. There are many parallels to the music industry. People were tired of paying for a whole album that had 2 good songs and 12 crappy ones. More importantly, porn would be better as an art form than as product. That is my opinion, anyway.

I'm sorry, Rosco, but I've never argued this with anyone. And I'm not quite sure how the "porn industry" has ripped people off; I've always paid for what I've gotten since I started looking at porn, which now dates back to around 1978. Some of it wasn't always to my liking, or shot the way I wanted, but I wouldn't really say I was ripped off. Maybe disappointed at some of it...but I can say the same about the mainstream movies I've paid to watch, or the music I pay to listen to. I'm never amazed at the hate towards porno...yet we're all here, babbling on and on about it all. Kinda weird, huh?
DRM is terrible. DRM causes more trouble that it's worth and consumers hate it. It doesn't effect pirates one bit (there is *no* DRM system they can't strip away) and all it does it piss off the paying customer. The movie, gaming, and music industry have quite a bit of experience with DRM and it always bites them in the ass. The consumers get pissed, lash out, and won't buy products... and the pirates keep on getting it for free. Sorry you're getting ripped off man, but DRM won't help.
Going back to the OP title Why Is Porn Dying ? Who said it is dying ? And if it is dying - it is because of the DVD burner and the software that allows anyone to rip a DVD, and it is because of the Internet. But the internet i s"killing" many other industries too - eg second hand furniture stores.

Much easier said than done. How can an operating system tell the difference between user created content or legally shared files, and something illegally downloaded? The MP3s I've ripped from my own CDs look just the same as ones that are available online. DRM within the media files themselves is either so restrictive that it pisses off customers, or so weak that it's trivial to circumvent.Agreed. It's not like people have any excuse with porn. Most major sites don't rip off their customers and offer really convenient access to their content.
^ Can't agree with this. Most online available stuff already has the restrictive DRM you mentioned. Which is something I perceive as being ripped off, considering it's called 'download to own'. If I own it, let me do what I want with it, including backing it up to several hard-drives so not all of my porn stash is gone as soon as one crahes. Sure, I could contact the store's customer service and ask for more licences. The company that may have closed down by the time I need them. Some Like it Dark is a perfect example of what is still wrong with porn and is complete bullshit. This review is going to be short and sweet, (well as far as the review length only), and right to the point. Produced by LeMayzing Productions and directed by Lynn LeMay, Some Like it Dark is the classic case of what’s on the box cover is not on the disk. On the cover of this release we have three photos; a Thug (the dark portion)in the background, one of the Moore sisters in classic booty bitch pose in the foreground, and also in another background shot, The Moore Sisters. The Moore Sisters are both nude, posed with one standing, and the other sitting in front of her with a hand on the sister’s belly. The cover also says, “Featuring The Moore Sisters.” The spine shot has the thug standing and he has a sister standing on either side of him with his arms around each of them. This shot is also the primary shot on the back cover. This is long been an established shot in the porn world for a 3way between those three individuals. All of the other stills on this cover are definitely in the background and aren’t full color, but a pink/purple, so the standing Moore Sisters/Thug shot is definitely the draw. The disconnect between the studio and the consumer makes that all but impossible. At the retail level, it's the "porn seller" who is ignoring customer complaints and giving lousy customer service. And I can only assume the retailers are being hard-assed because they can't rely on the distributors or studios to make good on defective product. So the end customer has to eat everything. And consequently the "porn industry" gets the rap.

True. But I don't believe that threat is so powerful. The "new" factor is overrated, in my opinion. If there was no new porn, there are still millions of hours of already-existing porn. More than enough to serve anyone for many lifetimes. I'm not advocating piracy. I'm just saying the "no new porn" argument doesn't have much sway.

Its the industry either people in it are stupid or they just dont care...take Jules Jordan for instance, he distributes Brazzers....now guess who owns the worlds largest network of tube sites, including the number one tube site in the world. If you guessed Brazzers, go to the head of the class. If you dont see the problem with it nothing I can say will explain it.
The industry started suiciding itself with all the free TGP sites. Soon it became a race to see who could give away more free content. It should have surprised NO ONE that people would not want to pay after getting a taste of free.
One thing I've been wondering. Won't the tubes lead to more public acceptance for porn in the long run? We've got a whole generation of kids growing up on porn thanks to them.
Public acceptance? Maybe. Corporate acceptance? Not likely. If the industry wants to survive it needs corporate advertising dollars. Hell, you might as well give the porn away for free and just fill it up with ads and product placements. That's a business model that could work, if only you could get the deep pockets of corporate America to buy in. I don't see it happening until all the Baby Boomers are extinct.
It's pretty simple why porn is dying IMO. They just don't freaking get it. More and more the girls are being faker by the second. Boob implements, face lifts, butt addons and all of this other stuff is why people are turned off IMO. I really think most people want to see the "average" looking person on film. Therefore, it seems real and not some fake cartoon. Right now, I mostly turn to Euro based porn.
